In The Lost World: Jurassic Park Dieter Stark is killed by a pack of Compys. Little dinosaurs that possess a narcotic venom from the Michael Crichton novel. This may be one of the most horrifying ways to die on Isla Sorna or in any of the movies at all and since Camp Cretaceous canonized the toxic poison, it makes it even scarier.

It would also make for an interesting angle in JW Dominion…imagine a drug cartel getting ahold of a pack of Compys and essentially milking them for their venom for a new hyper-addictive offering, like Dino-fentanyl.

Yeah I don't get this at all, thats like comparing drowning to being set on fire. Drowning is MUCH less horrifying than immolation. One is a brief fright followed by immediate peace of mind, while the other is just horrific agony from beginning to end If ANYTHING had to *get* me in JP, I'd pray for compies. As opposed to raptors that do everything the compies do but without the merciful venom. Dilo's that can painfully blind you shutting down your arguably most VITAL sense for survival. Carno's can camouflage and take you by complete surprise Being swallowed whole by a mossasaur Ripped in half by a mated pair of T-rexes...or used as a training kill for their inexperienced offspring Any of the herbivores can gore or trample you with ease and that is by no means a swift painless death ( Unless maybe its a Brachiosaurus)

While it wasn't confirmed in the film, the symptom clues that the compies' bite is venomous such as heavy panting, sluggish reflexes, disorientation are present in how Dieter dies. The compies, plus the Dilophosaurus venom, and the Troodons from Jurassic Park: The Game would be ideal predators for a genuinely horror-inspired creature feature. I love me the T. rex and Raptors, but dinosaurs with fictional venomous attributes (including the Scorpius Rex from CC) possess a strong horror factor.

I was just thinking that about the venom too! He was definitely acting way more disoriented and panicked than a rational person would. Dieter Stark's death was always one of the scariest deaths in the film series, but knowing that the compies had a venomous bite that would make you lose energy makes that death even scarier. most people seem to underestimate just how deadly even a tiny creature can be. you can sort of tell through Deter Stark's body movement that he's injected with something due to him stumbling over so many times. it's honestly a perfect example of the age old lesson that just because something is small and/or cute looking, doesn't automatically mean that it's isn't deadly and/or dangerous. I've always like the designs of the Compys and I'm glad they were introduced into this franchise. and hell, they are kind of cute. ^-^

I always feel like this is the ‘sweet spot’ with the franchise. This and the dilophosaurus showed that dinosaurs can be exotic & strange and also dangerous. I love that the film seems to portray the venom, even if 'by accident.' Peter Stomare starts to play it as a little disoriented, confused, out of breath, and the biggest thing to me is thirsty. People criticize that he starts to lap up the river water, like 'why would you pause for a drink???' but after reading the novel it really feels like that weird dehydration that your body gets when some substance starts to take effect. It's a shame it was never explicitly explained in the film, although if there was ever a scene explaining it, it was probably cut pretty early. It could've been added to Burke's speech about the Compy earlier, but that would have made Deiter more aware of the dangers of the little dino and the whole point was that he was an egotistical jackass who ironically dies by the smallest dinosaur on the island. Love the video, and love the compies. 10/10, would try to have one for a pet even if it is a little vicious, venomous, ankle-biter.

The fact that Ludlow did not have animal handlers and vets who were assigned to the Sorna facility as part of his team during the 1997 harvest operation is really interesting. His team should have included former Sorna staff that had worked with every single species of dinosaur that was present on the island and those staff members should have been front and center, advising and supervising the operation. It would be interesting to know why Ludlow did not have people like that as part of the harvest team, though it may also fall into the same category as his decision to not start his harvest operation at the abandoned Sorna facility as opposed to anywhere else on the island. The old Sorna facility had a perimeter fence built around the primary structures. Their harvest operation could have started with inspecting, repairing, and reinforcing the abandoned perimeter fence and securing a safe zone as opposed to trailblazing through the jungle.

The compies in the Jurassic Park novel were just little demons. The scene were the midwife finds three compies purched on the side of the crib with their bloody jaws above the dead baby they'd fed upon was just harrowing. Likewise the scene with John Hammand in the book. Was he unpleasant? Yes, did he deserve to go out like that? Debatable. JP2 makes them seem just that little bit more dangerous, taking down a physically fit man and dogging his steps until he stumbles. I’d imagine the compys venom is a neurotoxin which starts to impair the senses causing that delirious like state and that their venom glands are similar to Gila monsters where they have to chew a bit on you in order to get the venom into bloodstream. With Dieter running he essentially was letting that venom in his bloodstream effect him faster which allowed the animals to have their feast even quicker.

Prolonged terror and physical exhaustion is how it happens. The little guys wear him down over the course of 30 minutes to a couple hours until he simply gives up.. The sequence of Dieter being worn down and killed had the biggest impact on me since i saw it the first time. It's both confusing and terrifying

The compies have always struck me as one of the most unique creatures the Jurassic franchise has ever made. Design wise, they're a poetic opposite to the many colossal creatures that the franchise bears. And indeed, giant dinosaurs do sell due to their association with power and deadliness - but the compy is a creative exception. Their initial cuteness adds up to their initially harmless first impression. Imagine the reaction of audiences seeing the compy for the first time: an innocently curious critter. It's affectionate, beguiling, and its size means there's no way it could harm someone. But soon, the horror trickles slowly upon seeing more of them come one by one. They're communicating with each other in unison. You can tell they're *planning* something. And in that moment, you realize... *you're their prey.* The Velociraptors and the T.rex may be the dominant icons of the JP/W franchise, but the compies have solidified themselves as the memorable underdog dinosaurs at the back of everyone's mind. They're the first thing most people think about when you mention "tiny dinosaur" - even if they can't remember the name, they certainly remember its appearance.

As a kid I always presumed that Dieter broke his leg when he fell over the log and went off screen. In pain and unable to get up he would have been easy work for the Compies. Reading the book as a teenager, I thought the venom would add to their deadliness, but still thought he might have injured himself in his last ditch escape attempt. Nowadays I don't know which theory to go with, but I have no problem with them dispatching him in either case. Little animals can be really deadly, even without venom if there are a lot of them. Plus, worth noting. I watched Jurassic Park and The Lost World with my Gran as a kid. The only death that disturbed her (to the extent she had to leave the room) was Dieter's at the hands of the Compies.

Aside from the genus name "Compsognathus", everything else Dr. Berk says about the compy is actually referring to Procompsognathus. the species name "triassicus", the discoverer, Fraas, and the year of discovery, 1913. just a random compy fact that i guess kind of relates to the video

I don't know. A lot of venomous snakes kill you by breaking down your blood or making your flesh start to rot or just making your muscles stop working so you suffocate. I think I'd prefer to go into a euphoric state where I couldn't actually FEEL them eating me than to be ripped apart by a t-rex or raptors, or by being bitten by something that is venomous more like the real-world examples we have and knowing what is happening as I am going.

They really screwed up the pace of that movie by leaving that poison detail out. How hard would it have been to put in like 2 lines of dialogue explaining that? Even with the canon poison ability, IMO, it does a disservice to the pure physically imposing nature of dinosaurs. Like...if even these tiny animals can easily kill a grown man, then why is a velociraptor or T Rex any more scary?

For me personally, especially without reading The Lost World novel yet, I still find it terrifying how something that tiny could kill Dieter Stark, especially AFTER seeing what happened to Kathy at the beginning of the movie, AND not even fully seeing what happened to Dieter at all. Basically, in Jurassic Park, size doesn't matter. Either way, it's still terrifying to think about. Also, the Compies killed a newborn baby in the first novel.

I had read both of the books before the Lost World movie came out, so...I knew _exactly_ what was going on there, and after having read Hammond's death _and_ how they'd pretty much derailed Dogdson's mission on Isla Sorna (eventually leading to him becoming baby Rex food)...yeah. Dieter? No chance. Although, in that scene, you see the confusion, but none of the euphoria that's causing it. I suspect that's part of why most people look at the scene and question why Compys could take him down, or why the kid in JP3 would be worried about them. They're just not seeing the full range of effects to help explain what's going on. Would exposition have helped? Yes...but given the lack of InGen handlers who would've been familiar with the little devils, and how fragmentary Compy skeletons are in the real world...I don't see how anyone else would've known they had venom of _any_ kind, never mind something that mimicked narcotics! Although I suspect frog DNA might be to blame for that more than anything...

The venom makes so much sense with him. I always figured that the compys did it because I was able to figure that they gathered into enough of a pack, and the sheer numbers were able to overwhelm him. What I never understood as a kid was why he didn't just climb a tree to get away. Honestly, while yes, the venom is terrifying, its a more merciful way to die, compared to the brutality of a raptor or rex. I'd wanna survive, obviously, but if I had to choose a dino to kill me on Sorna, it would be a compy. I'd rather drift off to sleep in bliss than be agonizingly ripped apart by a raptor eating me as im screaming. A rex would be my second choice, because at least it would be fast.

One thing that doesn’t make sense to me though in regards to film canon is that at one point, I thought they described them as scavengers and if they are scavengers, then there would be no need for venom because their prey would already be deceased, right?

I always felt that the way the compys got Stark was because they just wouldn’t let up. He had to keep moving. He couldn’t stop to rest. He couldn’t stop to drink. He’d been walking though a hot tropical environment for who knows how long, when he come across the stream. So desperate for water he is just shoving his face in the water to drink. But the compys are almost immediately attacking him again. So he has to keep going and going. He keeps moving, trying to scare them away with kicks and rocks. Eventually, he climbs over the log, and doesn’t even have the strength to get back up. And the compys are still there, ready to attack again. Honestly, I find that even more terrifying than venom.

Another point is ya saw how fast they drew blood in the first few seconds, then think about the amount of other bites he received up uniltil his death. Blood loss would've played a bit part in it. Hell, ya saw how much blood came down the stream of water when all of them jumped him after he went over the log.

It never bothered me that a full grown man was taken out by the Compies, even before learning of their venom in the novel. I figured "there's a heckin' lot of them, he's alone, he's unprepared, and they're not so much different than rats and we all know they can probably swarm and devour a full grown man if they got the hungries." But that's just me. Edit: That being said, yeah, it's definitely a horrible way to go.

as a kid I always thought that with the way he sorta roll/falls over that log that he fell onto a broken branch and got impaled before they started eating him once he was immobilized. even when i read the books and found out about the venom thats still how i think that played out, there is just too much blood too quickly and as someone who was playing in the woods as a kid and got about a half inch of a broken branch in my guts when i fell on a log not only would he bleed like a stuck pig if he got full on impaled but he isnt going to be able to fight off a swarm of compys.

I always wondered why they went with the Indoraptor, when a swarm of Indo-Compys would be absolutely terrifying. That tiny size with the bite force of a T Rex, plus the venom, and the flexible jaw if the Indominous Rex, and the intelligence of those larger theropods, with the swarm/pack hunting… Horrifying and deadly

I agree they are dangerous, but you can't underestimate a swarm tactic either. In the books, while dangerous, there isn't even a really good explanation for the toxin. The books are even inconsistent with the toxicity. John Hammond gets sleepy, but Dodgeson and Levine never seem to be bothered by the bites.

Sorry, Klayton, but I have to heavily disagree here. While it was still bad, I found the Hammond book death was by far the least terrifying dinosaur death in the franchise for me. I took Morphine once in my life for a kidney stone and that completely numbed everything with no pain and made me so sleepy, that is way less trerrifying than seeing a massive pair of jaws open and having dozens of eight plus inch long serrated teeth pierce your skin and seeing nothing but teeth and tongue and getting lifted up by those teeth and then being swung around and torn in half, all while still conscious and feeling every bit of it, then having your torso tossed slightly in air and falling down it's throat as its teeth continue to tear more holes in you and then you start sliding down its throat while you are still barely barely alive. Or, you know, having a raptor tear your intestines out and eat your guts while your alive and can't fight back, or being blinded and then having your guts ripped out and eaten while you're still alive. On a scale of one to ten, Hammonds compy death is like a 7, Dieters less pleasant compy death would be a 12, and pretty much every other dino death in the 50-100 range. If I'm going to die I don't want to be ungodly tortured for an agonizingly long time compared to basically being involuntarily put to sleep.

I never saw an issue with the compys taking down Dieter Stark, even without a venom bite. It helps to look at real life carnivores and you'd be surprised how they're able to take down prey much bigger than themselves. I've seen a video of a pride of lions taking down a grown elephant. Bobcats, though rarely hunt them, do have the power to kill deer, and they're a solitary predator. The compys had the numbers, like a swarm of ants killing a scorpion, Stark stood no chance.
