An interview with sound designer ‪@RichardDevineMusic‬ from when he visited Riga, Latvia in October 2019. This seems to be one of the few interviews where we get to know the human side of Richard - his journey to the world of sound design. But don't fret, there's gear talk included!

Richard Devine is definitely a deep-sea creature. For the looks of it, this man embodies sunshine and his voice could easily soothe all your troubles away, but put him in front of the right gear and a whole new world arises. From techno beats, rave sets and frequencies that scratch the most inner parts of your brain to useful sound design of everyday tools - Richard lives a life where every knock, beep and screech is a part of a bigger picture. He’s known for his enthusiasm towards gear and companies that help him shake that picture into cosmic rays. That’s why we had to sit him down and see how that kind of brain developed into what it is. Turns out, it’s not as mysterious as we thought, but it’s definitely a life that sounds a lot different than we could imagine.

Great stuff, I just knew him from his insane set ups and always wondered how he had the money to get 4 units of everything I can't afford one of :'). Interesting story!

this only has 10 comments :( I wish richard devine was more popular he's so amazing like what the FUCK I'm really new to this I'm only 17 but it seems like this man is the absolute master of his field, it seems like no one does it better. But I know that can't be the full story! i don't know, maybe there is no one with that much equipment in that position, but i keep discovering new stuff... It just seems so weird all these artists that I love they rarely have something over a million plays even if they've been at it just as long, even if it's every bit as interesting and good and wise. It's like fucking LEGOS that is just more perfectly fitting for this music than I could've ever imagined! But who follows lego creators? ofc the most brilliant parts of math are probably understood by the smallest group of people, and music is not that different from math. Computer is best instrument.

Had an amazing time playing in Riga at an event called MMM and some other smaller gigs, back in the early 00s, really great to see electronic music is still evolving there!

Nice interview and editing! Just wanted to point out at 5:10, Richard says Juan Atkins, not Quantec in the subtitle.

Kontakte was a mind-opening experience for me too. Still think of it as the preeminent example of experimental electronic music.

Such a humble guy. Met him in London. Amazing mind. Truly the most innovative person ever in electronic music.
