In a way, none of them actually overcame the trauma of their childhood despite their level best attempts: Among those who moved away: Bill wrote great stories but always came short at the endings because he knew his own still didn't end; Beverly and Eddie wounded up marrying the exact manifestations of their childhood fears: horrible parents; Richie and Ben both consumed by unrequited love and loneliness , be it due to low self esteem or self acceptance; Mike who valiantly stayed to prepare all the shots necessary to kill the beast ended up letting them fall off the edges; and Stan, who was actually so close to being devoured by IT and thus so traumatized, ultimately chose death over having to face such horror.

The subplot of Ritchie being gay and secretly being in love with Eddie was something added to the film, it’s not in the original novel. It works and adds another level to the loss of Eddie at the end. James Ransome is perfectly cast as the adult Eddie, the resemblance to the kid is uncanny.👍

Derry was a bad place because of Pennywise, even when It wasn't active and eating. The book explains that It aka Pennywise came through from a different reality sometime long in the past before even early humans were around, and it hibernated until people came to the area that would become Derry... and then it woke up. Mike was a librarian in the book and he spent a lot of time looking into the history around Derry, and it wasn't ever normal. There was a group of guys who holed up in a cabin over one winter in the 1700s, and when spring came the cabin had body parts and blood everywhere, including private parts nailed to the walls, but no explanation how it happened because every one of them were dead. A man in the 1800s went into a bar, got a drink, and then proceeded to chop up a bunch of people he hated into bits. The local Ironworks hosted an Easter Egg Hunt in the early 1900s for the kids of Derry in their building after taking great care that it was safe, but some malfunction caused the place to blow up with all the kids inside, killing most of the kids and adults. In the 1930s a chapter of the KKK in Derry firebombed a local dance joint run by some black men, and because they nailed the doors shut most of the people inside burned to death. In between all the big events that Pennywise influenced evil people to do, there was still a steady amount of children that disappeared from Derry and the surrounding area. It should have been enough disappearances to get nationwide news coverage if it happened anywhere else, but not when it happened in Derry. So the answer to your question about WHY the adults didn't do anything is that Pennywise held sway over every adult in Derry and some of the kids - the evil adults and kids Pennywise used to kill for It, the regular adults Pennywise influenced to be their worst selves and to not notice the bad things happening, and the regular kids were It's prey. The few good adults felt the darkness in Derry and moved out as soon as they could.

Although it isn't "perfect" and has it's flaws, there is a lot that I really enjoyed about this movie. The first was better imo mainly due to the performances of the children actors really selling everything about their characters so well. Bill Hader is just amazing and steals the show for me in so many ways although everyone had good performances also, but his ability to transition from comedy, utter fear and powerful conviction so naturally really hit home.

Great reaction! I wasn’t a fan with how they portrayed the horror stuff in this one, but the heart was still there for sure! I wanted to share a quote from the book. It’s actually the last paragraph(s). It always makes me cry. The story is really a beautiful metaphor for childhood and growing up. When they leave Derry, they all forget each other again. But they never forget how they made each other feel ❤️ “He awakens from this dream unable to remember exactly what it was, or much at all beyond the simple fact that he has dreamed about being a child again. He touches his wife’s smooth back as she sleeps her warm sleep and dreams her own dreams; he thinks that it is good to be a child, but it is also good to be grownup and able to consider the mystery of childhood . . . its beliefs and desires. I will write about all of this one day, he thinks, and knows it’s just a dawn thought, an after-dreaming thought. But it’s nice to think so for awhile in the morning’s clean silence, to think that childhood has its own sweet secrets and confirms mortality, and that mortality defines all courage and love. To think that what has looked forward must also look back, and that each life makes its own imitation of immortality: a wheel. Or so Bill Denbrough sometimes thinks on those early mornings after dreaming, when he almost remembers his childhood, and the friends with whom he shared it.”

I'm new to your channel, so I don't know how much you know Stephen King apart from the movies. But in some movies, he has a cameo. This was one of them. He is the shop keeper selling the bike back to Bill. That whole scene is basically him making fun of himself. Since a lot of people say that his endings (of the books) are bad. And he has always had the ability to laugh at himself, and have a great sense of humour over all, so he joins in on the "bill write bad endings" bit here, since Bill of course is a stand in for himself. Other great cameos and even full parts from him are in Rose Red (pizza guy), Pet sematary 89 (preist) and he has larger parts in Creepshow (where his son also has a part) and The stand (90s version)

I like this movie. its a really good adaptation of a massive book, and I think it tackled some of the darker aspects of the book in a decent way. I like the Stephen King cameo as the shop keeper. It's funny because Bill was a sort of stand in for King (both being horror writers and such with sometimes anticlimactic endings). It's a good touch. Now about Pennywise, It. Pennywise was a clown who lived in Derry, and It used his face as a Glamour (a magical disguise). it did this because people would be less likely to run from a clown. That was how It got you. (It was for this adaptation that Pennywise is made to look scary.) In the book, Pennywise looks like a normal clown, like Bozo or someone like that. I remember reading something about how professional clowns didn't like the book because it made people afraid of clowns.

Yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Another great reaction. I love how rich Stephen king stories are. The best adaptations are the ones that focus on those strong character aspects of his works vs. just going for the horror. His stories are plenty scary…but they’re always so much more than that. 😊

The gay bridge attack was also Pennywise's influence, not the Derry people being awful. Always just before Pennywise awakens for his feeding cycle, horrible tragedies occur, which in the book is implied to be Pennywise's mind control kicking off just as he is about to come out of hibernation. Further proof of how powerful Pennywise's mind control is even when he is sleeping for 27 years, is the fact Pennywise made the Losers forget things after they left Derry.

My biggest issue with this movie is that them choosing not to go with the same structure as the book/miniseries makes fair this movie come from nowhere. In the book/miniseries, the child sections are memories that the adults are having. So later on/in the second half of the story, when New details or encounters with It happen, they make sense--the adults just remembered another part of their childhood that they'd forgotten. In these newer movies, the child parts in part 1 were all presented as happening in real time, so it makes no sense for this movie to be like "but actually they had a clubhouse and all this other stuff happened" because we literally saw that they didn't have that in the first movie, so all that stuff feels like they just pulled it out of their ass. I hope you do go back and watch the miniseries one day! It's closer to the book in some respects and further in others but it's good in its own way!
@baixiaolang Жыл бұрын
(some of my other issues being the very stupid thing of "Beverly can see how we're going to die if we don't kill It." Like, not only is it not in the book, not only does it not make sense, but it's blatantly disproven by the movie. Stan didn't die because they didn't kill It, he died from remembering trauma due to Mike calling him. In other words, Stan only dies BECAUSE/when they decide to come back to deal with It again. If Mike never called them Stan would be alive. So that right there proves what Beverly saw wasn't a result of not killing It, because it only happened because they didn't just leave It alone when It came back. Also if she saw Eddie's death then it means she also knew he would only die if they DID go after It. Really felt like the writers didn't actually put much thought into that. I didn't really like the way they killed It by being mean at It until it shriveled up. They learned the "don't be afraid of It" lesson at the end of the first movie when they beat the crap out of it and then basically spent the whole movie looking for another way just to do it again except they called him ugly the second time around. The monster at the end of the 1990 version looked bad, and i know the book's version of the battle is basically unfilmable, but the way they killed it back in the 1990 miniseries was way, way less dumb. Also the "finding the artifacts" plotline was a waste of time.)

@@CasualNerdReactions the unabridged audiobook performed by Steven Weber is the best damn performance I've ever heard! It's a HUGE run time of 44 hours but it's addictive. There is so much more to the story than what the movies can convey- like the counter to Pennywise and why each "loser" became incredibly successful after defeating It. The movies gloss over what it's final form really is too. Honestly, if you get two books from Audible make It one and The Martian performed by RC Bray should be the other. Only settle for these versions though- there are abridged versions with lesser narrators to be avoided.
