The BARNEY the Dinosaur franchise began in the late 80's with a look unlike anything we know today. We delve into the history and existence of one of the most unique, yet somewhat frightening designs for the purple dinosaur, and how it was nearly lost to time.

This is without a doubt my favorite Barney costume of all time, and I really wish they had kept it. Especially with how it looked in Season 2.

Funny thing about the "bite bar," according to Jess Nelson, is that was actually the invention of David Joyner. As I understand, the mouth mechanisms in the original Barney suits were built identically, but were meant to be operated by hand, hence the "dead arm" you often see in the original six videos. As Nelson tells it, Joyner was frustrated that he couldn't move the mouth and use both arms at the same time, so he decided, out of the blue, during a performance, to grab the thing with his jaw. The sponge padding was added so it wouldn't (immediately) destroy the performer's teeth. I don't know which suit he was using when this happened - Joyner used the 1990 suit for personal appearances - but this explains why the arms weren't attached until 1994.

Oh man!! Every time I see Barney I just tear up! The love and joy he radiates is truly special!! Even to this day I still find myself singing all those songs from The Backyard Show all the way to Barney's Great Adventure!! No matter how old I get or what comes my way in life, I will always love and believe in Barney the Dinosaur!

When I was 3 or 2, My grandad used to always take Me and my brother to the local playground, and since I watched Barney at the time, I used to imagine I was Bop, My brother was BJ and my grandad was Barney! It was just like the show in real life (to me back then!)

This is the one I remember most. Barney In Concert was played a LOT at my babysitter's when it came out. So that design is rather iconic in my head as a result.

This is probably one of the only barney costumes used for the series that lasted longer than it should have next to the season 3 costume after and the last hit entertainment costumes that are suprisingly still around with this costume being around in only both of the series from 1991 in the last 2 backyard gang tapes,the first 2 seasons of the famous PBS series before replacing and remolding it with the more new and brighter costume we would be more familiar with throughout the rest of the series even though the costume would still used sometime during the lyrick years before it would officially not be used for future productions anymore.I have had a really big love for this costume since it's what I grew up with first during the hit and lyrick years with reruns on sprout and home videos of the series at the time.He's fuzzy and boxy yeah but he now has that adorable round plushy look that we have loved about barney for many years to where it's been inspiring fans to make actual replica of the costume which is very awesome.

This costume could very well have been my introduction to Barney because I honestly don't remember if I saw Barney & Friends first, or if we got the 1992 VHS release of The Backyard Show first. I'm pretty sure it was Barney & Friends first as my sister got The Backyard Show for her birthday, which was in January, and unless the 1992 releases of The Backyard Gang all came out before January 30th, chances are it was her 3rd birthday in 1993 when she got The Backyard Show. All this to say, this version of the costume is the most iconic version to me, being it's the one I saw first.

Don't quote me on this, but I think the '92 BYG rereleases came out when the JC Penney promotion began; around mid-late Q3. BARNEY'S MAGICAL MUSICAL ADVENTURE was sold exclusively at JC Penney until January 1993, so if that release is any indication, the date was August 2.

@@jennifrog8117 That is a distinct possibility. I'm also in Canada and we didn't have JC Penney here, and I have no idea whether release dates were slightly different here or not. Barney's Magical Musical Adventure was out at the same time as the wider release in the U.S. and that's all I can tell you. Lol.

@@tgif1345 MAGICAL MUSICAL was the only Penney-exclusive BARNEY tape. The other nine - including BARNEY'S BIRTHDAY, which came out around the same time - were available wherever videos were sold.

@@jennifrog8117 True, but if they were re-released to coincide with the promotion, then they're connected, whether they were all sold through JC Penney or not. My point being is that, regardless, we didn't have JC Penney here in Canada, so I have no idea when the re-releases came out here, in comparison to the US. We don't always get things day and date with the US releases, even though we're both in North America.
