I'm a filmmaker but this video is very useful because I like to remember the essentials sometimes. I usually film at 50fps (I live in Spain, that is a PAL region) and then I playback at 25fps. I mostly shoot events and weddings and I shoot this way because sometimes I need to slow down the footage but I don't know when. I like more the look of 1/50 but I think that 1/100 it's a pretty nice compromise between motion blur and the possibility of slow down the footage later. 1/200 for 100fps looks awful to me, 1/100 is the limit. When I shoot comercials, events like theatre plays or social media content I always use 1/50 and 25fps, of course.

Have you ever tried to split the difference and go with like 1/80th or something. Giving you enough speed so the slow motion doesn’t look blurred but the realtime doesn’t feel over cranked? Speaking for your 50fps wedding/event stuff I mean.

1/50 and 1/125 were pretty great, 1/50 definitely feeling the most natural, but 1/125 also surprisingly satisfying as well. Anything above or below either felt way to slow and choppy or way to fast and choppy. Amazing video man! This one is going into my editing studies playlist 👍👍 BIG HELP! MANY THANKS!

Great video, one thing you missed through is when the camera is not stabilised. On a gimbal, tripod or when you have great IBIS with low movement (i.e. not Sony IBIS lol), everything you said is 100% true and correct. However if you are free holding your camera and especially walking/running with the camera all of this becomes a bit moot as electronic stabilisation (EIS) must not have motion blur to operate, otherwise you get shimmering/movement/blur in the background (whether you do this in camera or in post as you're trying to stabilise a blurred image). Something like 1/250s is generally enough for EIS to operate correctly in most cases (ideally more) and you may get away with 1/125s if you are very careful (e.g. ninja walking). You may want to add artificial motion blur in post which actually looks pretty convincing these days. This is such a common mistake, people buy ND filters for their vlogging or action cams to try to follow the 180 shutter rule, not realising you should absolutely under no circumstances try to follow it unless your camera is properly stabilised on something like a tripod or gimbal (or you're doing something like a hyper-lapse and want exaggerated blur for dramatic effect).

Yeah if you’re relying on some kind of digital/electronic stabilization that can definitely be a factor. Very specific use case but worth mentioning! It’s too bad that you end up with the “cranked shutter” look in the end. That ruins the shot for me a lot of the time.

Excellent video for us newbies. I’m normally doing photography. I’m looking for an answer to a, “how did they do that” in a movie. If you want to be able to grab stills from your vid you should crank it and add motion blur in the edit. But honestly my plug ins for blur kind of suck. But most people can’t tell the difference.

OK, 60 fps @ 180 dg Shutter Angle (= 2x Shutter Speed) is not ideal for 60 fps playback ... but which Shutter Speer is 360 dg? 4x fps? These information is missing in the video ... :-)

I touch on this around 7:43 but 360° means that the frame is exposed for the entire time. To 24fps would be 1/24sec, 60fps would be 1/60sec. The math would be fps x 1 if that helps.

I recorded at 4k 3840 x 2160 and when I bring it in to Premiere Pro it becomes 1920 x 1080. How do I keep it at 4k?

Make sure that you’ve created a 4k timeline in your session. That’s the only thing I can think of off the top.

1/13 looked terrible in all because it's not enough frames to convey motion, in slow motion couldn't tell any difference, in mid motion 1/125 looked as natural as 1/50 to me with 1/250 looking a bit artificial but not terrible, in very fast motion 1/50 looked marginally more natural than 1/125 and 1/250 looked very artificial, but then in very high motion scenes you probably want a bit of less natural motion blur? - maybe my eyes are broken though 😅

If you broadcast at 60 FPS, you increase my data burdon. I do not like that. If you are shooting for Netflix or the like, 4 FPS is probably correct. If you are making video and its primary or probable secondary use is TV, you should conform with broadcast standards. 30 FPS in North America, Japan, South Korea. 25 FPS everywhere else. Absolutely nothing I have seen on KZbin is likely to be seen in a picture theatre. Gerald Undone made a video a few years ago, before he had the big haircut, about how films and videos are converted between different framerates. 24 and 25 are mostly interchangeable, all other conversions involve inventing frames or dropping frames. Neither is good for quality. Most of my stills cameras do shutter angle and VFR.
