For anyone interested- the baohong one that she likes comes in a block and those are really reasonably priced for beginners at smaller sizes. Like a 10×7 20 sheets for 17-20$ or even 10x15 for 24-26$. Those can be sectioned off as well or even taken off the block, cut and mounted. And those prices are far more attainable at first than 62$ off the cuff. The roll is more economical, and is obviously needed for large paintings, but sometimes it's about what we can manage. Those blocks aren't more than a decent quality sketchbook, but they are way way better. Kris is also a super great teacher. Get her free course, it's very well done

There's some more affordable cotton papers out there now. The worst 100% cotton paper is infinetely better than the best wood pulp one.

Yes. I am possibly addicted to Arches paper (which isn't so bad now that I have a bit more money but was painful when I was first starting out). Anyway, love the video!
@KrisDeBruineStudio3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much. Arches was my first brand of 100% cotton paper. I don't use it much any more....but it is still a very popular paper.

Do you stretch your paper first? Or do you tape? Have you noticed stretching your paper before alter the absorption? I've noticed the better the paper.. the less I actually stretch.. but the "lower" quality (still being 100% cotton) stretching makes it a lot better.
@KrisDeBruineStudio3 ай бұрын
No. I don't usually stretch the paper. I have stretched in the past, and yes it does affect the paper, because, by wetting the paper and letting it dry, the sizing that is on the paper is affected.

As a beginner it was suggested to me that I purchase artist grade paint. I did so, although it was not suggested to me that the content of the paper was important. As such, I struggled a great deal as my paper dried immediately preventing me from effectively dropping one colour into another. I also was unable to glaze one colour over another without lifting the previous layer as the paint had not been absorbed ino the paper. I wish I had seen your video eatly in my painting journey . Thanks Kris. I hope new learners are paying attention.

I'm glad you found this video to be helpful. Thanks for sharing your journey. If it makes you feel any better, I would say the SECOND most IMPORTANT ingredient is professional grade paint. The student grade paints have more filler/binder and are not as vibrant. So....now that you have BOTH of these materials...you're on your way. Again....thanks for sharing.

I don't like Bee paper, I find my paints are balky on it.

I basically use bee for color studies only. It's not nearly as good as the one she mentions in description.
