Mustang Heritage gives Mustangs to veterans with no horse experience but a 3 week class that they dont enforce veterans to attend. Unfortunately, owning a Mustang has become a status symbol among veterans. Ive seen too many Mustangs from this program get abused, neglected & abandoned. Its shameful. There should be higher requirements & vetting.
@Gypsy6484
@Gypsy6484 Жыл бұрын
Please share the link of the veteran’s program you are talking about and your sources discussing veterans and wild horse abuse. I know of therapeutic settings where veterans with PTSD can work with trainers (TX) and help work through their issues. It sounds like you are saying that wild horses that are given/acquired by inexperienced veterans specifically will get abused. I’ve known cases of horse abuse with all kinds of people. EVERYONE should be vetted prior to acquiring a wild mustang as well as checked periodically to ensure the animals are well cared for.

Unfortunately the BLM could give a crap. In fact they sat at my gate waiting for me because I would t sign the final paperwork without a contact for a trainer. They said the horse is yours, period. We need the paper and that is all they care about, getting them out of BLM pens, not their problem after that.

Absolutely should be higher requirements. My very first horse I trained from start to finish is my Mustang named Bougie. It was a wake up call. Fortunately I was influenced by the right people and got into this type of natural horsemanship training. Exactly the way Ryan trains. We did classes and our homework. We did it the right way just like you see in the video. It’s very doable with determination, understanding, and patience. Throughout our journey I was told by many , Mustangs are worthless, you will never make him a riding horse, or you will die trying. Try telling a cowgirl she can’t do something,she will do it out of spite. And that journey made me a much better horse woman. I would not have the Horsemanship Skills I have today without that difficult Mustang and the determination to find our way. My Mustang is now a proven Champion, in English, Western and Endurance riding . Our Bond is unstoppable. We still get underestimated but at the end of the day we Respect. Yes if you get a Mustang you better have time and resources to make it work, or don’t bother.

@@Gypsy6484 You can look up Mustang Heritage, Veterans Program. Stop with the excuses. No one should abuse any animal but if inexperienced people who obtain a Mustang for Free with only maybe 3 weeks of training to gentle their Mustang yet hardly attend the classes is more likely to abuse the horse! I've seen it over & over. This is different from therapeutic horse back riding that is offered for free to veterans. Look it up.

My daughter and I are first-time horse owners and adopted a mustang yearling. She is now 3.5 years old and I would not change anything about the experience. It has been tremendous growth and learning for us all and the bond she has with my daughter can't ever be broken. I think in some ways, we have an advantage over an experienced horse owner. We don't have preconceived ways and timeframes, we just adjust to her. If you have the desire to do what is best for the horse and lots of research and spending time with the horse, you will succeed. I don't think most people realize how much time it takes, but it is totally worth it. Thank you Ryan for all the great videos, they have helped us so much!

Flies! She can only get them off by stomping or brushing them off with her nose, especially on front legs or she can use her tail to swish them on her hind legs. But she has a halter and lead rope on preventing her from using her nose. So she stomps . I've been attacked by a Mustang and almost trampled to death. If she was planning that she would have already done it. The rest of her body language, which you learn about in this type of training tells you she is not in attack mode. Of course you would usually use fly spray first but she may not be ready for that yet. Oh yeah the fly spray is a monster to just started horses. Sounds simple but not to them. Ask any horse owner. A horses brain is the size of a walnut, no joke . Look it up

No "hoo, hoo" or "calm down". That is what is your strength as a horse trainer, all your knowledge and your enormous calmness. Almost all people get stressed in such a situation. They reflect the horse's stress, so the horse's stress level increases. You are really good!👍👏

I get emotional watching this mare. I bought a mare (in the 80's!) who was so much like this mare. She had been a brood mare for 7 years out on a range, no handling. But she was halter broke. For a year I tried gentling her, tried to "get her trust". But when I got comfortable, thinking she was okay with me, I would get bolder with the brush on the side or belly. She blew up. The pattern seemed hopeless for me so I gave her away in trade for a old saddle. She would have been such a beautiful horse to ride if I had gained this knowledge Ryan has. I want to cry because her life was all fear.

Another great video. I love your relaxed manner. For green handlers.......don't get the rope/lariat up under the upper dock of the tail where they can clamp down. It truly can become the next verse of Dumb Ways to Die! Very difficult to get the lariat loose when they are exploding/bolting. The horse can get a rope burn and set back their training. I've made this mistake for you! Maybe Ryan already covered this and I missed it.

Guilty! First time horse owner and I have a mustang. I started out with a TIP trainer. I ride for almost 50 years and I can say that I really need to watch out to keep establishing leadership. Over and over. The rest is surprisingly easy with my mare. In 4 weeks she is doing very well. Halter, cleaning, picking up hooves, trailer loading, saddle pad, surcingle, leading, driving… But leadership establishment is questioned often.

Horses, dogs, any animal folks need to normalize being able to admit when they can't be what an animal needs, it isn't always about growing your ability it's about what is best for you and the animal, if your horse is having issues do not be afraid to reach out to someone who knows more. It isn't you failing it's you and the horse growing even stronger

Sure it can be flies. It can be a gesture of protest, too. J Lo stomps he right/front leg almost exclusively, which I find interesting. A lot of horses protest stomp with the front/left most of the time. I've heard,,, the higher the draw upwards (hoof nearly touching the belly), holding it there for a half a second, then downward stomp, that's a cheesed off horse. J Lo stomps were more subtle, but evident. I used to "put my foot down" a lot. Then I hired a divorce attorney.😊 🐎

@andreawimer4334 I think it's flies for 3 reasons: 1) she isn't focused on anything, or in particular Ryan, when she does it. 2) she isn't doing it when Ryan is using the flag or rope for pressure, 3) Ryan does not make any mention of it, which I think he would if it was a behavior that he thought was a protest, threat, or just impatience.

MAN you just said something really, really important. "Horses don't get scared BECAUSE of the pressure, they get scared when they don't UNDERSTAND the pressure." I'm a dog trainer, and this is something that hardly anyone understands in my world. Dogs don't get scared of pressure (aversives, negative reinforcement and positive punishment) unless they DON'T UNDERSTAND it. You don't see horses cowering in the corner of their paddocks because there's an electric fence. They know how to avoid it. They understand it. So they aren't afraid of it.
