One thing I really like about Mantic's hard plastic models is how they seem to be influenced by the way GW's early hard plastic models for LOTR Strategy Battle were designed. That game was considered very "mainstream" by GW at the time - something that was likely to be bought by non-wargamers and for kids. Consequently the models, while having good crisp detail, were designed to be sturdy, chunky, and simple to assemble. While it meant they had somewhat "boring" and non-dynamic poses compared to later models, it also made them easy to clean up, assemble, and paint. To my eyes this is the way Mantic is designing their hard plastic. They realize the nature of KoW is that a person is going to be assembling 80 halflings at a time and there seems to be conscious thought put into making this a reasonable thing for a normal human to accomplish.

There’s a lot of old opinions based on a sprue from 10 years ago but some folks hear that and it becomes the tag line that sticks. It like the common misconception that all Malifaux models are fiddly to build. People take these sound bites and they stick.
@NotTheStinkyCheese2 жыл бұрын
bad reviews tend to stick around the longest ... It sucks, because (some) companies do manage to increase the overall quality of their product. It is also not easy to see how old any given model/range is, so you can't always be sure that there aren't any quality gaps in a given range. (Yes the ogres are new/improved ... but what is the current state of the official KoW factions ? Are there any that still suffer ?)

If these are being made by who I think they're being made by (and the font on writing on the sprue would suggest that they are), then I am not surprised. I recently got sent a stack of Starfinder miniatures from Archon Studios (I didn't order them, I didn't expect them I got them because of some weird quirk of them honoring a Kickstarter that they picked up of Ninja Division) and the quality of the models is amazing, easily as good as GW. The details, the assembly and the final poses are on a par with GW's character models. So it's not a surprise to me that Mantic's new Miniatures are also exhibiting a higher level of quality. I think it's a potentially great partnership for both companies
@NotTheStinkyCheese2 жыл бұрын
I must admit ... I did recognise the sprue style from my Dungeons&Lasers collection. And indeed ... the Starfinder minis which I got as well (I heard some lucky bastards at the 1$ pledge level also got stuff ... )
@Paul_Inman2 жыл бұрын
@@NotTheStinkyCheese You heard right. Although I don't really know if lucky is the right word. I pledged $1 and then added a couple of dollars because I wanted some of the space ship models. Then Ninja Division went bust and I wrote off the pledge. Then Archon took over and I thought, well, maybe I will maybe I won't get my pledge. Then Archon just sent me a stack of plastic, out of the blue and totally random. It wasn't my pledge, I have no idea what I will do with them but good on Archon for trying to do right by backers I suppose. And if I hadn't got them I wouldn't actually be aware that there's a potential challenger to GW in terms of high quality plastic miniatures casting

While I already have my old fantasy armies. The setting, the style, it just all feels a bit too 90s GW catalog to me.
@BlackJackLegacy2 жыл бұрын
I think that’s an old opinion that lots of folks had as it’s really where Kings of War started out. That’s not where it is any more but like the the “Mantic models are rubbish” outdated opinion it’s another thing that seems to follow them around even though it’s not true. 99% of folks who say that have never tried the game but base their opinions upon what they “heard” or thought it would be like.
@majortom71862 жыл бұрын
Other than historicals I can’t think of any games that don’t have female minis in their range.
@BlackJackLegacy2 жыл бұрын
Not so much in the variety of a force for bigger scale games. They’re generally single sex factions. Take 40K for example. There’s females in the game but rarely mixed sex units and in some factions no mixed sex at all. They’re generally all male or all female. Skirmish games do mix it up but army scale games tend to throw in the odd female head here and there. They don’t really sculpt female bodies.
@majortom71862 жыл бұрын
@@BlackJackLegacy I think you are being a bit unfair to GW there. Yes, there are mono-sex factions (both sorts of marines, both sorts of Sisters, Custodes, Orks). Guard, Eldar, AdMech, GSC & T’au all have both sexes however, and Necrons & ‘Nids don’t have sex at all. Hell, you can make a good argument that marines are so far removed from human that they’re no longer sexed beings, and Orks are fungi.
@BlackJackLegacy2 жыл бұрын
@Major Tom I think saying that Marines are anything other than only male is hardly a hill worth dying on. Should they be mixed sex? I think so but there’s a lot of folks feel very strongly about this one so you can’t say they’re not only a male faction at the moment. I’m not limiting this to 40K. Other army scale games generally don’t mix the sex of a unit either.
@majortom71862 жыл бұрын
@@BlackJackLegacy I only really know Legion and 40K, both of which do mixed sex units. I suspect that if 40K does, AoS will too.
@BlackJackLegacy2 жыл бұрын
From experience with AoS there are female characters in Stormcast Eternals (as an example) but if you buy a box of 10 Stormcast core units they’re 10 male sculpted armour models. That’s what I’m getting at. Not that there aren’t mixed sex factions but that your main boxes of core troops are generally single sex (and most of the time all male). That’s why this Ogre box is a real change to have a male sprue and a female sprue. It’s unusual in that regard.

Andy, is this a sponsored video? Did you know that Mantic are sending people marketing emails with a direct link to this video? I have no problems either way but I think you should be clear. I happen to disagree about the ogre sprews, I think they are average, I don't like the aesthetic. Too much going on. But on the whole YES! Mantic quality has dramatically increased from their old stuff. Especially their goblins and halflings. And, they remain very good value for money. Hats off to Mantic!

No it’s not a sponsored video. I was given 2 sprues to take a look at (as were others) and I’ve given my honest opinion about them. Anytime I do a sponsored video I alway clearly mark it as so so you can see at the start of the video that it has been sponsored.
