I wish more instructors would talk about principles, it's such a crucial aspect of bjj and yet it gets overlooked a lot

Yeah for sure, the thing is some of these simple big principles are the hardest thing to discover in a way they seem obvious once you know them but they really aren’t so easy to figure out

This is one of the GREATEST free guard passing principles videos ever made. PLEASE don’t take it down. You need to write a book on principles. I’m drilling with my sons… 10 and 13.

This is *such* a good video. I might only be a 3-stripe white belt, but from now until forever, whenever the technique of the day is a pass (or a guard/escape), that technique will be filtered through this lens that you've just opened my eyes to. 🤙
@tapskill3

Professor Jon your passing principles are truly the core of guard passing! It’s easy to remember the principles vs passing technics because the process of passing has too many variables that are difficult to predict , but the principles allow you to stay ahead of many technical transformations. When you add both technical skills and practical principles they complement each other! I ‘m definitely going to add the principles to my game! Thank you for sharing and pushing Jujitsu to the next level! Coach AL

Great stuff as usual. I have had issues with my position being off/too low or over, especially finishing over/under or double under passing and getting reverse with a triceps push. Id love to hear more principles on finishing passes to prevent easily losing a position. Thanks for all of your content!

Hello master! White belt with a few stripes here. Thanks for the content first of all :) As a suggestion I would tell you that maybe in your videos you could include a breakdown - every now and then - of systems/principles from either IBJJF fights or even from your students sparring, highlighting the application or lack of application of these concepts. Spending just a few minutes after class with my instructors asking "what did I do wrong there?" is priceless because of the wisdom they share, so consider this: in BJJ the majority of practitioners is white/blue: show them (me) what goes wrong during our sparring and then a top-notch application of what should be done instead from IBJJF tournaments.

I loved this video. Many a tad long for my attention span but I managed 😂 This is basically my style of guard passing but loads of details I will pay attention to in the future because there is a lot of room for improvement. I struggle with very flexible guard players. So plenty to take away here as regards them trying to get the foot back in. I will be applying this stuff tomorrow & see how I get on. Thanks for the great content!

… as a new white belt, learning these principles is a godsend. I feel like in my gym at least, we just get chucked into the middle of what in other martial arts are already intermediate level classes (showing technique, drills, then sparring), skipping these key basics entirely and being expected to learn through harsh experience alone.

Passing like this has never been an issue for me, my issue is either not being far enough back to where they have a collar grip or a grip on my lapel and i start to play their game. I know she wasn’t trying but if this video had an active bottom player where the hands are also involved I think that would help a lot

As a purple belt with primarily open guard game this is sick for those times I'm on top. You're right about the grips at the end, we'd like to know more, for example, sleeve grip and kick off the pant leg is a killer and often what I fight for, lose that and you lose the position, any ideas on how to stop them getting it back?

I'm a blue belt and my passing is weak and this will definitely help, I'm much better off my back. I seem to get tired much easier trying to pass guard, mostly I get tired from fighting grips, especially when the higher belts grab my collar and use it to break my posture when I'm standing and pull my head down, I usually have to go to lower level on one knee to relieve the pressure, anything to help me with this would be much appreciated. I think half my problem is letting them make grips and taking too long to make my move.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 6 ай бұрын
I think when passing them making grips on you is inevitable so it’s more about learning to pass through certain grips than it is to not let them make grips on you. You gotta break it down by most common grips then have plans for dealing with them.

FOR GUARD PLAYER : 1. knee elbow connection : for the guard player : do not extend your arm FOR GUARD PASSER : 2. hips facing the wrong direction = their limbs are facing the wrong direction *FOR BOTH* : 3. feet between my chest and his chest = recompose (even if his hips are facing the wrong direction) ; many different ways to put my chest between my chest and theirs--> FOR GUARD PASSER : make it your nº1 priority to control their feets -- FOR GUARD PASSER : 4. chest to chest connection = he can not put his foot between our chests 5. variation : hip to chest connection (for ex, knee cut)
