This video is a big inspiration. I started Ju Jitsu 9 months ago and I have found it very hard. Every time I go to class just me showing up is a huge accomplishment. I am 62yrs. old and pretty healthy, it is hard for me to remember all the moves. I do believe if I went a lot more I would get better, I wish I had started 30yrs ago. Quiting is always at the front of my mind but then I remember that I am doing the best I can.

Your convo at 21:50 is EXACTLY my experience. I’m a white belt and a few months ago I was rolling with a blue belt easily 110lb heavier (he’s awesome though and very kind) but I was having such a hard time getting him off mount. the roll before him was also very hard but with a 4 stripe white I’ve never seen before.. anyways, after those two rolls I cried bc I felt in a real lie defensive situation who am I to think I have any control with someone physically large than me. It’s so nice to hear a a similar story especially from another women in a combat sport. Thanks for sharing 💕

Yes! When you were talking about having something to prove, i felt that. You put it into words perfectly because since it’s such a male dominant sport, sometimes men underestimate women so for a while it’s a constant battle of “ don’t underestimate me, i can do this.”
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch 3 жыл бұрын
It is indeed. Now I found that the roles reversed - guys (ones I've never rolled with/still have an ego/lower belts) tend to feel the need to prove something, which ends up being not a great roll lol.

Such a relatable video. I've been praticing BJJ for a year, 127 lbs 5ft4, and I still find it extremely difficult to accept the ''survival'' and ''defense'' combat style I have to adopt all the time, and still dealing with feelings of inferiority as a female compared to stronger men. I was always comfortable around men, but you really have to learn to ignore your ego and have realistic expectations when learning BJJ! I learned to stop trying to proove my value in front of others. Fortunately, the guys there are so kind and understanding towards my situation, which makes me want to pursue this discipline!

Thanks for this post. I train with my 2 teenage daughters 15 & 17. For the first year my 15 year old trained in the gym with all of these very large adult men. It's amazing what a positive effect it has had. One thing I remind both of my daughters is that when a new female considers joining and starts the free trial - be extra aware that they are now rolling with an unskilled Female newbie and not a 220lb man. So don't crush them to hard physically because it may crush them psychologically and the may not join especially if they feel intimidated by everyone including the only 2 other females. It takes time for them to get to the point where they feel like a man when training as you said. Hope Female students encourage other Female students to join and continue to train

My only issue is rolling with men who want nothing to do with you, they basically just go limp and let you do whatever you want which is not helpful and feels a little embarrassing. Not sure if anyone else has experienced this. However, 90% of the dudes I roll with are awesome, the best ones wont go easy on you and also let you know what you can do or what you can improve on.

THANKYOU! So so much for uploading this video. I’ve done juijitsu for almost 7 months now and I am still so anxious when I even think about asking a guy to roll. I often find myself crying inside (and later in my car) as I sit out of rolls because of this, despite having tons of energy. It is exactly what you said, the fear of guys not wanting to/not appreciating a roll with me since I’m small (5”2) and not at all intimidating. Majority of the ladies in my gym seem to have no problem asking guys to roll. So I kind of felt like something’s wrong with me haha. But you disclosing your experiences in this video and reading all the ladies’ stories in the comments are all very comforting. So again, thank you :)

To be honest, I do avoid rolling with women and smaller men. There's only so many rolls I get in in a week and I'd prefer them to be with people my size or bigger. Of course that's selfish and bigger/better people would probably benefit from going against better people than me. But it's still fun rolling against anyone regardless of size.

Honestly speaking, women are the ones that make it a bit weird in the jiu-jitsu gyms for guys (no disrespect). Jiu-jitsu is a very touchy sport and men give the women the power of choice, to cross any physical boundaries. If you stay quiet, you don't get to use your extra privilege of choice.

I'm most of the time the only girl as well, but I'm gonna tell you a secret, I went it completely like a girl who knows nothing about it, and then I told them directly that I didn't know much and maybe they could teach me something, I left my ego outside and just went in to ask them to be heroes and helping me out for the class. And you know what, I learned a lot from them as they were really happy to show me technique and also allowed me to try with them. I didn't care about the part that they will get the most out of rolling with me but I care about the most I will get from them, so everyday I probably learned the most in that room 🤣 being a woman is useful if you know how to use it, you don't need, at all, the compare yourself with men as you are not a man 🤗

Wow! Great video. I’m a male BJj Brown belt, and have trained for 20 years, balancing career, family, etc. but K have never considered looking up the female perspective on what it is like to train. I have female training partners, that I roll with, but now that K have daughters who are close to an age to start training, I wanted to hear what my girls might experience. This video was exactly what I was looking for, and so well done. My daughters are small right now, but I want them to have a love for Jiu Jitsu, but I won’t force it… but having a different perspective may help me to craft how I introduce it so that they can take what they want from it. Thanks again.

I have found in BJJ as I have in swing dancing, as a lead, I would adjust the skill level of the dance to my partner. We were both there to enjoy the dance, not show off. The goal is that both of us have fun but my partner first. I may not get to do all the fancy tricks, but if my partner is beaming after the dance, then I would be satisfied. When I first began BJJ, I had mostly partners who did this, but as a noob white belt, I felt like I was fodder for their practice. I felt very defeated each time. After a while, I learned to ask them to teach me what to do to counter the situations I was in. I turned my partners into my teacher. They were all willing to teach me, including the ones were were merely a few months more experienced. I turned the rolls into my mini classes. Practicing what we learned that day but at the beginning, the partners put me into situations I had no idea about. So my knowledge grew a little more on each roll. The classes were less dreaded as I turned them into an actual learning environment, not a place to prove my metal. This was probably the first time I let go of my ego and actually enjoyed going to classes. With time, when I rolled with first timers, I would temper myself to their skill, as I would with my dance partners. I used to also worry that I wasn't giving a good dance for my partners who were much more skilled than me, but most were happy to be sharing a dance and enjoying the music. If I was enjoying myself, she was enjoying herself and there didn't need to have any fancy moves. A well executed beginner move was more satisfying than a poorly executed fancy move, for both parties. This applied the same in my rolls. My rolling partners would temper themselves too as I would preface our rolls with "I'm just a noob, please go easy". Most would and few would use me as fodder. That's ok, as I learn from the roll asking what I could improve. But if I never asked, they would never say. When I rolled with the only woman in the class, who was a much more senior white belt, I'd lose every time, but her lessons are more technical which I liked. The awesomeness of BJJ outweighs some of the egos, but they're equally, partners as well as you learn a different lesson, and presents you with challenges for you don't get to test your metal, both physical and especially mental, until you have a challenge. The best thing is that you get to practice it in a controlled environment for dealing with it for real, in life outside. I hope this adds to what Kimberly said and helps anyone else feeling stuck. As for being submitted every time, you need to participate to gain experience, make all the mistakes to know what is a mistake, before you get to do the submitting. This is learning. It's a process.

I feel you girl! I work with little kids so i gave up on looks a long time ago haha, but the sweat was a surprise. I'm the only girl in my class but once it sunk in I've totally used it to my advantage. The master is always on my side but in the first session he could barely look at me, and made comments about guys moving their hips to "impress their girlfriends" and told me to do something "like a ballerina" which pissed me off but that set a fire in me and I was all "I'll show him". And since then the master really likes me and when we're rolling he's always telling me how to beat the other guy. The guys are all amazing, I haven't been tapped out many times but it does feel disheartening when it happens, because as you said if you put it in a real life situation you feel like you would loose a lot. However in real life the guy isn't trying to out skill you they're trying to hurt you so you can outsell them and get away. I'm slowly learning my strengths tho, I'm great with my legs, i have hyper flexible wrist and arm joints, I can hold guys in guard for ages which helps me get my breath back and I'm sure the more techniques I learn the better I'll be. I wish more women would get into this sport because I feel it does play to our strengths and is something we are more likely to use in life that could end up saving us from a bad situation

Helping me with techniques during the roll. My husband trains too. so, I usually roll with him to start off then have to find a new partner. I thankful have been paired up with smaller guys and the bigger ones don’t put all their weight on me. I’m a girly girl. I love my makeup and I have colorful hair! As a guy who just started training bjj a couple months ago, I kinda relate to this. I'm one of those really sweaty people, probably the sweatiest guy in the gym and I feel bad about it sometimes. But its also because I'm one of the smallest guys in my gym (5'10",150 lbs) and I get much more of a workout from each session rolling with guys most of whom are 200+ lbs. I also feel very defeated after each class and the only time I can submit people is basically when they let me 😅. I'm trying to focus more on technique and staying healthy because as I'm sure everyone who first starts out you kinda go through this phase where you're fighting for your life when rolling and use up all your energy and strength to overcome certain positions... which usually just ends up putting you in worse positions anyway lol.

I think you would be surprised how relatable this is to guys. One thing I want to point out from a males perspective when rolling with girls, we take personal space and sexual assault very seriously. Obviously there might be slip ups where hair is pulled, chests are touched, groin to ass (Sounds weird but inverted guard to back take transitions can make this possible)… ANYWAYS, if you feel uncomfortable talk to your sparring partner, other girls, or your instructors. I’d say 99% of gyms will take you seriously and try to make the situation better. For example, I was training at a foreign gym because I was traveling and some 18 yo guy made a masturbation joke before grappling me. I told an instructor that I saw a girl make a facial expression and feel uncomfortable so I told him and the instructor talked to him after class and from what I heard it hasn’t happened again.

If you're very worried about touching boobs or butt, then probably rolling around on the ground trying to strangle each other is not the best sports for you. Thanks for this video. I am in a gym where a handful of ladies roll every Thursday night, so it has been helpful watching posts like these to better understand training challenges from their points of view. One piece of advice, if you don't mind...no one should think that being smaller is a drawback for their training partners. So much of BJJ is like threading the needle. When rolling with somone smaller, it forces one to be more precise with their movement, placement, and techniques!

as a guy- I like rolling with women because its way less competitive and more technical. I am a big guy and wont ask you to roll. I don't want you to feel uncomfortable getting crushed by a 200lb dude. but if you ask me I will 100% roll with you and try my best not to crush you and use more technique. Its actually really beneficial for me. The reality is we need to learn technique. learning at high intensity and pressure comes after learning the movements correctly, so in my opinion we usually roll way to hard in sparring. So please, just ask. Great video. Thanks! trying to convince my wife to try BJJ. I will not be showing her this video lol.

Definitely! If you can get a roll in with a woman who's been training for a little while, it can be a very technical roll! There are definitely great men out there who appreciate that, but there are also the ones that admit that they just want to go full force 100% without having to pull back on the strength lol. But anyway, it sounds like you're a great training partner to have :) Convince your wife and don't tell her about the bruising and black eyes!! hehe.

I did have one girl in our class who did not feel comfortable training with every male because she was scared of getting hurt I think she had a bad experience and scared that if she pulled a good move that the male will keep ramping up the intensity . Just like u say males just go light and have to use more skill then muscel out of stuff. Pro tip don’t roll with brand new people because they are the ones that will hurt the most people . And for the bigger/ advance u couldn’t escape from men have to deal with that too

Really appreciate your perspective Kimberly. As a smaller guy (140lbs), if there was only 1 female I would often train with them and it was nice to see what it's like from their perspective. Couple pieces of advice I'd offer to new females training would be: 1. You might have to initiate asking someone to roll because I've recently learned that a lot of guys will not initiate out of respect or nervousness. I just learned this recently because at my first gym, we rolled with everyone for positional sparring and i got to know the females very quickly. They were also higher level on average than the guys, so they were not afraid. Rolling with them seemed perfectly fine since we all knew each other pretty well. But after going to a new gym and not knowing the girls I've noticed it's a way different atmosphere. I'd like to offer to roll with them because I'm a smaller guy and perhaps closer to their size, but i have no idea how they would feel. And other guys have said similar things like "they won't ask a female to roll, but will wait for them to ask" 2. You always have the choice of who you want to roll with. You can ALWAYS say "no". If you think someone is unsafe or reckless, you have no obligation to roll with them if they ask. Idc if they're a black belt. It's up to you and you alone. This actually goes for anyone that trains. Hope this helps!

When I was 18 years old I knew a girl who had a black belt in judo. She laid almost of us boys on our backs and was coveted like no other girl. Sure, there were a few guys who were offended in their macho world, but she weren't interested in them. But also they respect her. She was a feminine sporty woman, confident and charming. A wonderful combination and a heroine in my memory. :-) And I think jiu jitsu is especially for women fantastic. Because with very good technik you can defeat stronger people. That strengthens the self-confidence a lot. And everyone should be able to use the fall technique. I would make this compulsory in sport lessons in elementary school. Is like swimming. You don't believe how many people fall and get injured in her life.

This video gave me the kick in the butt I needed today. Ive been training for 3 months. Im one of the only females at our gym, about your size. My husband trains there too, hes a big, strong 230 pound black guy. Hes a teddy bear, but he regularly submits brown and black belts, I noticed most men in the gym are apprehensive to roll with me. I'm getting frustrated because alot of days, im only getting rolls in with my husband. I feel hes too big, too heavy, and id like to regularly experience other partners. Ive tried going to classes without my husband, and the men will pair up quickly, leaving me without a parter. I eventually get one, but its always an akward moment. I keep showing up anyway because theres no greater feeling, then after a great roll.

Oh girlll I've definitely been there!! My husband was one of the head instructors at the gym that I first started training at, so that combined with being a white belt, all the guys were hesitant to roll with me and would make comments about not wanting to hurt me blah blah blah because my husband (then boyfriend) was in the room. With guys, especially when you don't know them very well, I've found that a lot of times you have to take the initiative when asking them to roll. Sometimes they don't know if you want to roll with them so they won't ask. But once you get to be friends with more of them in the room, that changes! You deserve to get your rounds in just like every one else, so keep taking the initiative and ask them. You're doing great!!

Thank you so much for this video. It is good to know that I am not alone. I am fairly new at training jiujitsu (6 months) and I am still struggling with several of these things. I find it gross to roll with guys who don't wear rashguards. I have felt so anxious when rolling and getting stuck in mount or other positions, and many times I have cried after training. It just sucks to be stuck under someone stronger or bigger than you and it's a challenge to learn to deal with the feeling of powerlessness. Sometimes I think will I ever learn enough technique to become better with bigger people but it is all a part of the process... Telling about the anxiety to my teacher helped and since then I've become braver and more resilient.

Oh God my absolute worst fear is having someone land on me and I pass gas! I can so relate to the hair & nails issue especially painful finger joints. Spending 4hours a day, Im having major issues with the skin on the bottom of my toes coming off. I often struggle to find a partner, even when I ask the guys they tend to decline which is so disappointing. I used to feel defeated almost everytime because there was just no way you can match strength for strength against a man but now I see it as im perfecting my defence. If i can go a whole round without being submitted i now feel accomplished instead of crying. I still get the "oh you'll never submit me" which drives me to do better. The only time i cry now is when they land on my ribs! I love bjj because it's a game of chess but you're playing it with your body

If it's any consolation, I would be mortified if I farted when rolling with a woman. Hell, it's pretty embarrassing to do it with a guy either. As far as males refusing to roll with you that's some BS. If that's a regular thing find a different school. I will say that as a guy it can be a challenge to roll with a girl and give her a good look without just crushing her with either my strength or weight, or on the opposite end of the spectrum going too soft and her feeling disrespected.

I like how i am pushed by the men and guys, its a "little sister vibe or i know you are stronger than this vibe." yes, it gets rough sometimes-but i am learning alot about them and about me. so much cultural cross was broke, but it helps me to understand myself and boundaries. When a woman comes in, i am so happy and excited that i don't want to scare them away, but i make it to the point that i walk up to them, hug and smile and say, "thank you for coming, thank you for rolling, i am happy you made it..keep coming." So far we have two women (I'm the second) and two sometimes three teenage girls.

About what is said at 21:37 a man who would attack you in the streets is less effective to get in a position and maintain it than a bjj partner since most people in the streets know nothing about bjj except if you're unlucky enough to be attacked in a random parking lot by Gordon Ryan.
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch 3 жыл бұрын
I see what you're saying, but a man who's going to attack a woman is not only more than likely bigger than her, but there's other factors that come into play in this sort of situation also - which I personally think can make it pretty easy for a guy to maintain top position without necessarily knowing jiu jitsu. But, ideally we can only hope that all of the training would help, if someone were to be put into this sort of situation.

Better to have some training and a chance than no training and no chance. Even knowing how bad things would be to be mounted increases the urgency to the gf up and run. I never cared about my running ability and my cardio until I took up BJJ, because it's there that I'm learning how important distance management is, and how critical every grip can be.

I entered jiu jitsu not knowing anything about it. Jiu jitsu definitely forces you to change your lifestyle. Nails, lashes, earrings are all in my past.😂 The only thing I do is gel pedicures and they actually stay nice for up to 3 weeks. Black eyes, popped elbows and knees are all inevitable lol. It’s been over 9 years of ups and downs with this sport BUT I love it and it’s still a huge part of my life. Love this video. #osss

I get what she’s saying about uncomfortable spots to be in but jujitsu isn’t sexual at all and all that’s going through my mind is either getting out of certain positions or defending and trying to remember everything I learned in class. The focus is intense for sure.

As it should be, that’s awesome. I never mentioned anything about jiu jitsu being sexual, just spots or situations that may feel awkward as a female when you first begin training.

Thanks for the infos. I just started a week ago and the only thing I immediately thought about was omg these acrylic nails has to go and so as my diamond earrings that I kept in it on 24/7. Since then I felt like no reason for me to put them back on since I’ll be taking them off anyway. That feelings of being kind of sassy with my nails & jewelries kind of gone.

My daughters train. My oldest has commented about just how gross the sweat is. She loves Jiu Jitsu but the sweat is something she just hasn’t gotten used to. One of the guy at my academy calls no gi the slip and slide. I went to boot camp in Orlando Florida and I sweat as much when I train as I did in boot camp. I think it’s hard for people to believe just how much you can sweat when training.

@@kimberlykinch class was AWESOMMMEE!! 😄 I'll be starting regularly after next week! This was my first time but I felt "at home" in this gym--the instructors & students really welcomed me, I truly appreciated everyone's patience as I didn't know a thing. (EDITED TO ADD: we did warm ups/drills at start of class--then we circled to see the demo and then paired off to practice what we were shown, I was included right in as a white belt--they gave me a Gih to use as well). I struggled to remember positions/holds but I believe with practice it will become easier and feel more natural to me. I did have to get used to being in awkward positioning & people's atop of me but thats why I was there--to learn how to escape & defend if needed. I was nervous bc I didn't want to "hurt" anyone or get hurt myself but the fun truly outweighs the fear---I can't wait to get back on the mats! 😃 Thanks again, your video really helped!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! My (I think) only crazy parent insisting is that my little girl gets BJJ training. I know if I force it it won’t happen. But I want to plant seeds and understand HER likely journey. Also- for what it’s worth. I’m pretty sure I head a Gracie say that they consider weight a belt size. Someone got 20lbs of muscle on you- they are basically an extra belt of difficulty for many folks.

A man that has a gymnastics flow to his jujitsu the lack of a better word is going to make your time rolling with him much more delightful and you’re gonna get better a lot faster specially if he guide you along the way depending on how much ego you have and depending if he’s a good enough teacher and a high enough level to be doing that you know by what you learn. With a woman you you get to go for it over the light new male Find a high-level Jiujitsu flow artists and tell them to speak to you and your train with no ego and watch what happens

Thanks for your advice I just started probably I think I did 3 days now. I can't really say much I do like it I love the feeling of it it's very frustrating though when you get in those positions and you can't get out. And I feel like the guys are trying to go a little easy on you because your woman I had one guy just say let me know if you want me to push more which was really nice I appreciated that. But I could tell some of them you know don't want to try that much pressure but skills-wise yes which is good. Me and my brother wrestle all the time but then he doesn't want to wrestle in Jiu-Jitsu he's new too. Which I don't mind maybe he just wants to rest with the men I don't know maybe cuz we're siblings I mean we make jokes to each other. there's one girl in there that is varly new too. The guys they mostly have been very kind and helpful. I don't want them to feel like I'm flirting I feel like I might be a little talkative not talkative but it's about the moves tho maybe a little I don't know cuz then I think I'm just a little too smiley I don't know.
