A few tips I found helpful whilst learning Material balances: - Material balance is not stoichiometry although we use the latter as a tool. - When solving problems, draw clear diagrams before jumping into calculations. Make sure you have identified all streams with the components present. - Practice a lot of examples in which no diagrams are given i.e. you have to come up with the diagram from a statement. - When chemical reactions are involved, remember that Mass is always conserved, this is not the case with moles. - There are no formulas per se. You develop your own equations and come up with solutions. Thumbs up for the video. I really enjoyed it :)

Exactly, drawing clear diagrams with RELEVANT data is a game changer... And yes, it is almost a skill to convert words into process flow diagrams

People also don’t really understand that material and energy balances are essential for everything in the hard sciences. Whether you are doing fluid mechanics, mass and heat transport, you will be using differential momentum, mass, and energy balances. The same is for physics. in quantum mechanics the schrodinger equation is developed by applying an energy balance to a wave equation. In ChemE we also do mole balances for chemical kinetics which is also used in quantitative chemistry. In finance, they will use principles of chemical kinetic equations which is rate based balance of in and out coming flows of money. Essentially these skills are super useful and can be used to solved lots of important problems!

Exactly! My professor always used that example of banking and finance with respect to the general mass balance equation XD

We are honestly inclined to agree. Material and Energy Balance (or Chemical Process Principles if you're one of those schools) is essentially Process Design stripped down at its basic levels. You are introduced to topics like Real Gases, Separation Units, Reactors, Fluid Behavior, and Heat Transfer, but you will not get into those topics until you take Thermodynamics, Mass Transfer, Reactor Design, Fluid Mechanics, and Heat Transfer. You can play a drinking game over how many times we say "you'll hear more about this later" when teaching this.

I am actually in seventh semester, in my university, the signature is seen in third semester, and i felt very good in that moment, cause, i really understood all, and due to my teacher that was a very good one, i could learn the basis of that important subject, BUT, i have never seen anything of that till this moment, i saw only a little bit in heat transfer when i reached the topic of evaporators, but that´s it, i hope to see more of this in separation process, and practice more. The pandemic made me lose the level that i had, and cause of the depression that i suffered, but i´m ready to go in charge again, thanks a lot bro, for all the work that you do, saludos desde México, i hope to end the career being a good engineer.

Hi Ortega, let me thank you for the knowldge that you are sharing with us, I real appreciate it. I made my Proceess Engineering Bsc. Degree here in Mozambique Africa. Here in Africa, process simulator are so expensive and isn't easy to get one. How ever, I dowloaded COCO and started to simulate process with it. Hence, I would like to know with you, someone who is using COCO to simulate process will be capble to use Software like Aspen Plus or Hysis?
@ChemicalEngineeringGuy2 жыл бұрын
thanks for commenting! Yes, unfortunately, process simulators are crazy expensive, mostly available for high income companies. COCO is a great simulator overall, but lacks lots of tools. Personally, I know more peopl going for DWSIM, there are lots of ppl working on it in a daily basis, check them out in linkedin communities

Can you make a seperate video regarding this?

I will never understand, why people don't prepare an Excel sheet to calcolate the material balance, and with a small algorithm with matlab is really simple
@ChemicalEngineeringGuy3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is another way to do so... The problem is typically to set up the equations :P
@stilusforfun3 жыл бұрын
@@ChemicalEngineeringGuy I would say, unless you are at university, more or less you work on the same processes, just prepare a stock of equations on an excel sheet, you make the link between pages. I don’t think you have 20 process to produce methane 🤷🏻♂️. It is a fact nowadays that you are submersed by softwares, it is rare to stay with paper and pen calculating all the materials balance for the entire process.
@ChemicalEngineeringGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@stilusforfun that is true... I was focusing my attention in problem solving at university level, but true, at work processes are not going to be changed, or at least not so drastically so making a spreadsheet will work most of the times :) Im with you that it is very rare that you are going to actually work on paper as an engineer with material balances
