My vote in this election gravitated to my Afrikaans/English/ Christian/ cultural identity . These leaders have stood steadfast within diverse communities in SA, promoting an honest, sincere and humble but strong and steadfast 'poging' effort to evolve and adapt to the the changes in SA over the past 30 years, without losing our cultural identity as a minority group and recognizing other's rights to their's. Admitting that it takes mature, humble growth and effort in obedience to THE WORD OF GOD to achieve it, in a perfect world which we are not ! It takes dedication to succeed . Well done Ernst & Co.

Thank you Ernst for addressing the elephant in the room. To ignore identity cultural affiliation when it comes to important choices, people will choose their race/tribe. It is Biblical and God ordained. ,The sooner accommodation is made for this in government, the better for prosperity and cohesion in groups. I do not hate other races or look down on them but I still prefer to socialise and have relationships within my own racial group. That should not be a sin! Zulus or Xhosas should not expect me to enjoy their culture and they should not feel threatened when I enjoy/prefer my culture. Yet they do! Why is that?

😅Hey Ernst. Black guy here. Thanks for the video.❤But I have to disagree here. I think the majority of South Africans now, which is young and ever becoming urbanised, aren’t as slavishly attached to their heritage or culture as you make it seem here. Culture and identity is not the issue we are facing in SA. It’s simply a dysfunctional state and stagnant economy. That’s it.📍 If we got 7% GDP growth and 5% decline in crime every year consistently, literally all this academic and bombastic analysis of cultural existentialism would not be a thing. Even a place like Orania shows you most Afrikaners don’t care.😂There a few thousand Afrikaners in Orania but millions of Afrikaners scattered around SA (Joburg & Pretoria has more Afrikaners than Orania). No one wants to go there. There are millions of Zulus, majority young, doing everything to eject from KZN towards Gauteng. Same with Xhosas in poor Eastern Cape to mixed race Cape Town. All these people walking away from their cultural centres. I don’t know, man. I think you’re overstating our skin colour and culture obsessions, especially amongst young people who keep diluting and eroding these cultures/identities you stress on about. People want money and prosperity first.😅

Ernst - big fan of your content. I am an Afrikaner living in the United States. Like many I left South Africa in the early 2000’s for all the usual reasons: crime, the collapsing infrastructure, and just a general uncertainty of where South Africa is heading. In general, I like your videos and I think I generally support what Afriforum stands for. But, I do have a question, and that is, what does “winning” look like for our people? If I had a magic wand, and could grant you and/or Afriforum every wish you had, where would Afrikaners be and what would our world look like? Thanks - always rooting for you guys.

Cultural kibbutzim interacting with other groups could be perhaps an answer. I dream of a highly technical developing of the dry western area of South Africa which could supply the country with food if the coalition attempt eventually goes pear shaped & the country/State, infrastructure & its institutions dissolve into chaos.. Solar & oceanic tidal power powered desalination projects with crops under controlled covered cultivation. Lotsa funding & hard work needed here. Just an idea.....Letting go & moving on.....

Ok, so the past 30 years just produced a downward spiral under the ANC (from 2009 in reality). The voter was really disenchanted by the ANC needed a party to vote for that was at least in some way aligned to their hopes. JZ is viewed in KZN (I live here by the way) as being shafted by the ANC. So when he formed MK, it was a "relief" for Zulus to flock to the banner. My take on the move toward "interest based" parties is that the "generalist" parties simply either were shown to be pathetic, or were too far a step ideologically for the disgruntled average voter. So better to vote for a party looking after my interests. What is interesting is that the polls very clearly show that the vast bulk (2/3?) of SA voters are moderate, neither left nor right and want similar things such as employment, safety, infrastructure, service delivery, etc. The ANC had that all in the palm of their hands and they blew it.

Question about VF+, where did the Afrikaner vote go? It's apparent ANC and EFF votes went to MK and the DA lost Coloured votes to PA. The low voter turnout also suggests people are giving up on the idea of South Africa as a state, or giving up on the idea that voting will make any difference to their lives.

An interesting viewpoint on the concept of democracy. Perception of any idea however, lies with the experience and interpretation of the individual. How will the voters from varied cultural backgrounds living in the same community, all be satisfied with a ruling system based on the ideas of a particular brand of democracy? In the mind of the voter, the "right of the individual" is what matters and most importantly in S Africa, to exercise that right according to ethnic values and customs - even today. Will a carefully selected panel of politicians, representative of all cultural groups in SAfrica, each with his / her own perceptions and preferences, decide what such guidelines will entail?

For me, the most important thing about the South African elections is that, for the most part, all acknowledged the result, and that the ANC in particular accepted it and moved straight into discussions around power-sharing. I am pleased to say I was wrong in that my suspicion had been that the day the ANC did not get a majority would be the day democracy died in South Africa. It's still early days - and no doubt there is going to be a lot of trouble to come from the usual suspects - but the center is holding, which makes me more hopeful that a positive way forward can be found for this country - which it so richly deserves.

You almost sound as if you've read Edmund Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France", but only almost, if you have read it I suspect you misunderstood something, and if you haven't, you can probably save yourself a few months of studying history to get to his conclusions by just reading his letter instead. On a related note; I really love book titles from this era... say about 15th to 18th century, they are so specific and descriptive. "Reflections on the Revolution in France" is a shortened title, the full thing is this banger: "Reflections on The Revolution in France and on the Proceedings in Certain Societies in London Relative to that Event in a Letter Intended to have been sent to a Gentleman in Paris."

Fantastic and insightful analysis. I would particularly like to hear your thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of natural vs artificial democracy and which approach has led to local/national/regional stability or instability throughout history. I am particularly intersted to discover the impact of cultural elitism on this, as we obviously are aware of the atrocity of Apartheid. In other words, would natural democracy tend towards unhelpful forms of cultural elitism or not?

It never ceases to amaze me how well-educated people can really get it wrong. First and foremost, people are not like birds, we are all the exact same species. The only reason why we differ from one another in behaviour (culture), has everything to do with how we are raised or indoctrinated by our caregivers or communities. Call it ideology or social constructs, but religion is not biological or the infallible truth. Religion is a social construct. If we are all to get along with each other harmoniously, we have to learn to be tolerant of diversity of behaviour. Diversity is not a bad thing. If we were all to break off into our little or big laagers filled with like-minded and homogenous people, we will become far more vulnerable. Imagine a community like Orania trying to defend itself from attack by a much larger group of people. It is all very well, if your homogenous group is the greatest in numbers and strength, but not when it is the contrary. Please Ernst, start thinking more critically.

Great Ernst but surely the Freedom Front decline was mostly because the DA changed leaders and moved to the right - it belongs in your winners group for having represented minorities well - however unfortunately I don’t think the DA is viable longer term precisely because of the return to tribalism despite itself being in fact the minority tribe party - Cape Independence is perhaps a better option for minorities in the medium to long term?

I think that you are ignoring the fact that there are born Afrikaans people who don't identify and align themselves with Boer culture. Same way there are born Zulu people who don't identify with Zulu culture and customs. We can go on in all cultures and tribes in the world. Where do these people vote and fit in if we are to go by your analysis? Should they be forced in to a culture they do not care to belong to just because their heritage is of that culture? Should they ignore the richness of other cultures even if there is something in another culture that they like or identify with? Yes homogeneous countries do seemingly have fewer social issues than multicultural countries but that's not to say that everyone in a homogeneous country aligns themselves and is happy within those countries. In fact, many leave to other countries such as USA, UK, Asia, South America and Canada in order to experience other societies and cultures. There's no one size fits all to this life thing. People are very different not only to their communities at large but even within their own families.

I feel as though democracy is becoming South Africa’s worst enemy! Maybe it’s populism that’s the main issue here but the fact remains that for democracy to work in my opinion it needs an invested and educated electorate. Until the voters feel invested in the system and truly understand the implications of voting it’s pointless. Not saying South Africa is alone in this but it’s certainly an extreme example of a system based on who can make the biggest impossible promises while still maintaining a semblance of believability. It’s a tragedy tbh but what did the world expect to happen when you overnight give equal votes to a majority population of poor angry blank people? There’s no doubt things has to change but it seems to me if you really cared about outcomes it would’ve been done more gradually possibly over 10-15 years at a minimum. That might be seen as racist but I’d argue that even looking at it in a purely pragmatic way it needed at least that long to allow systems/society/customs to adapt without collapse & I think South Africa would be a much more unified country right now! Maybe I’m naive
