Hey Geetsly... you made mention of a significant difference between a blaster wound and a gun shot wound and it sounded as if the blaster wound is more damaging that being hit with a bullet from an Earth battlefield rifle. Just so you know where I’m coming from, my father was a United States Navy combat medic assigned to a platoon of US Marines during WWII, European Theater. I’m mid-level health care practitioner here in the US. Dad used to tell me about some of the common wounds and wounded he treated during the war when I was in my professional post grad program. He had no formal education in medicine prior to the war and our discussions were the result of my questions about how he became so effective in saving wounded soldiers (on both sides) with no real education in human anatomy and physiology. So, with that out of the way, whether a wound was the result of an 8x57mm Mauser round or the US 7.62x63mm (aka 30.06 Springfield, the results were extremely messy. The German 8x57mm round was common to the 1898 Mauser infantry rifle (and carbine) and the MG34 & MG42 General Purpose Machine Guns. Our 7.62x63mm round was common to the 1903 Springfield Rifle, M1 Garland, the Browning Automatic Rifle (aka BAR), the M1917A1 and M1919A4 Machine Guns. The majority of the wounds dad treated were by one of these weapons chambering one of the two rounds. Now when a round is fired and it strikes human tissue traveling 2,000 feet/second or greater (equivalent to 610 meters/second), besides the transfer of the energy expected as the round passes through the tissue, there is the creation of hydrostatic shock. This phenomenon is described as a cavitation effect that follows behind the path of a sufficiently speedy bullet through tissue and it effectively increases the wound cavity by an order of magnitude in the radius surrounding the bullet’s path . Even though the blood vessels, nerves, organs and such are clearly not penetrated or even touched by the passing round, the cavitation effect can and does rupture vessels and organs, create blood shot muscle tissue (tissue whose cellular integrity is significantly disrupted) and tear/damage nerves. I posit that the thermal transfer of heat from a blaster bolt that is as you described results in a similar but slightly less damaging effect on tissue as compared to what is accomplished by hydrostatic shock from a round traveling close to Mach 3 or more through the same tissue. I also imagine that the cauterizing effects of a blaster bolt prevents the kind of blood loss that kills from the most common rifle/carbine and machine round induced wounds inflicted on the WWII European battlefields.
