Yes, I've been to Dover Castle by the sea. I sat on the knoll and looked at the sea. Lovely, lovely castle. If I'm not wrong there are underground tunnels from where the second world War was fought across the continent. I think Dunkirk operation was monitored from here. It has been turned into a museum now. Thank you for bringing back the memories.
@MemorySeekers2 жыл бұрын
Yes we mention Dunkirk and the tunnels near the end of the video. Sadly no video or photography is allowed in the tunnels. Bit of a shame, but very interesting to walk around and visit under the cliffs.

I appreciate a good reconstruction, especially one like the Dover Castle interior you show here. I like that this is a castle rather than a palace, and the interior (I love the patterned brick and simple heraldry designs) reflects an early period in English history. A good vantage point has value no matter the times; so much of interest here. Thank you for sharing it! Stay cool!
@MemorySeekers2 жыл бұрын
Agree, I think English Heritage have done a grand job of reconstructing what might have been and present the castle in such an interesting manner.

A lovely tour and stunning photography and a history lesson with your calming voice...perfection! My favorites were the antique doors and hardware (gorgeous) and that backgammon board - but the close-up video mixed with aerial footage and panoramic views...just spectacular! Thank you both for yet another wonderful upload! 👍👍👍 "thank you" ~ Lisa in 🌲 New Hampshire 🇺🇸

Hello. I'm a volunteer explainer at Dover Castle ( seen in this video at 5:17 standing on the left with a union jack face mask). For your information, the beautiful doors shown are made of solid oak boards and braces, iron rivets fasten them together. The decorative ironwork is wrought Iron, and the white facings are not paint but white leather.

One of the things I always wanted to do was to actually walk through a castle like this, marveling as I climb staircases and touch walls so old. That this castle is still used for defense is marvelous.

Yes it is amazing to be able to walk around these Castles. Dover has not been used as a defensive castle since World War II its now run by English Heritage so we can tour around.☺

My son visited a couple years back and unfortunately the castle was closed. He decided to do a walk about even though it was a rainy miserable day. He slipped in the wet grass and was caked in mud. His comment was “I have Dover soil embedded on my jeans” (giggle). Thank you so much for the great tour along with the history.

Finally, I got my chance to watch in peace and time just flew by. I loved every minute of the video. I can’t believe I have never been. It’s fascinating. So much history and in a stunning location. My favourite composer, Thomas Tallis, started his career in Dover, and now I can understand how he got from there to London, with the importance of the castle keeping Dover on the king‘s radar. Thank you for pointing out when things were re-creations. It’s impressive how much effort has been made to preserve everything. The Roman lighthouse is utterly incredible. They were just phenomenal builders, weren’t they? I will definitely visit at the next possibility.

Yay another tour with the Memorymakers =-) Now that must be the castle that many stories / movies are based around, the structure, the baileys, the inner grounds.
