As the original SeoTaiji's fan, I remember how excited the era was. EVERY SINGLE TEENS were fans of him. Boys, girls.. didn't matter. I remember "Hayeo-ga" having Korean traditional instruments and made me feel so proud. I remember singing "Classroon Ide-a" banging my head. I remember how shocking it was when he decided to retire all of the sudden. He DID invented K-pop and introduced me to rock music. After him, I completely lost the interest to other K-pop cuz it became too bubble-pop. ...Until I found BangTan Boys..LOL

This comment made me smile ♡ BTS really are special for us like seo taji was for you. Most of the people around mr cannot imagine how important their love yourself series was for us fans. After years of mobbing in school their messages in their songs and speeches (shoutout to RM and Suga especially) helped me to see myself in a better light and not as a unnessesary piece of dirt on s.o. shoe like I felt for years in middle school. Sure for others it might mean nothing and they laugh about us but for me and many other it was very helpful on the way to a life worth living.

I want to add some more what Seo Taiji did for the Korean music industry. At that time, the whole music industry was corrupt. No matter how many albums were sold out, no reward sent to the musicians. The Establishment like record companies said "You guys became famous thanks to us. So, earn your money in nightclubs". No single artist couldn't fight against them because the Establishment consists of entertainment companies, record companies, broadcasting companies, and so on. The pre-censorship institution was one of them. Also, the artists were the slaves of the broadcasting companies. When they asked the artists to appear on the TV, they had to no matter what. If the artist refused, they can't be on the TV forever. In this situation, Seo Taiji stood against them. He canceled a contract with his company and continued his career by his own way without any help of a company. He did every step to create an album almost by himself ranging from engineering and playing instruments of the sounds to composing and producing the whole album. As a result, he became the enemy of the Establishment and they attacked Seo Taiji so terribly. The press spread vicious rumors like "He is Satan. He is a girl. He is pregnant??". Yes, although he is a male, they made a rumor that he himself was pregnant. The broadcasting companies prohibited SeoTaiji and boys from the TV and radio. Even the congress claimed that he needs to be stopped. Pre-censorship was just one of those attacks. Literally, the whole music industry tried to kill him. In this situation, Seo Taiji won over all the fights thanks to the support of his fans and gave all the rights of musicians to the current musicians. The reason I like him personally is because he never boasts these amazing achievements. For this reason, even many Koreans don't know what he did for the Korean music industry.

when i was in teens, i saw their first performance on music program in my life, i felt like being hit by the lightening. most of my friends are memorizing all the verses and following their styles and dances as armies love bts these days. before them, teens are just passive beings to follow the adults' order without resistance. but after we listened to their songs, we realized teens have the right and the freedom to speak up their voices against adults. seotaeji was our president of teens who represented our values and voices. his music style was also the door to open the new genre of music. most of all, his message was so explicit and democratic!! i think he was a cultural protester who led to enhance korea's democracy!

That is mostly true but I don't think that it's fair to say that BTS had the way paved for them in regards to them being the first artists to make it big in the West and consequently the World at least. When summing up BTS' entrance to the US, they had almost nothing to go off, they relied entirely on slowly building a small fanbase since their debut until they were big enough to appear on award shows like the BBMAs and the AMAs. I'm not denying any of the artists' previous impact in creating and shaping Kpop, without them there arguably wouldn't even be BTS today, and I think that the path to their beginnings was paved for them by previous artists. I just think that, along with breaking down many barriers and taking Kpop to a new level like you said, they created their own path to walk that didn't exist before.

Seo Taiji is really special because he is not just special in terms of music, but he has completely changed the Korean music industry. The concept of comeback comes from Seo Taiji. Before there was a concept of comeback, the singer didn't have any special authority, but Seo Taiji didn't want to do it. He wanted a cycle of making songs with plenty of rest, working for some time, relaxing and making songs. That's why I did it, but it was possible because it was Seo Tai-ji, and after that, everyone followed suit and became a culture.

Thank you so much for creating so many explanatory videos! I always enjoy watching them and learning more about a culture so different from the one I grew up in. I've always had a fascination for foreign cultures and their history, but getting into kpop has widened my horizons yet again. With your help, I can understand so many more things now :) I'm a high school senior and I chose to write my language diploma research paper on the rise of kpop, tackling different aspects of it, like reasons, struggles of the artist, production and lastly outcome and success. Your videos have made my life so much easier since it would've been impossible to find such information otherwise. Thanks again!

In my youth overseas despite how it was so hard to access kpop then, I could see SeoTaiji was a huge deal. But I never rlly got to know him since I was not at the age of disposable income and only heard drips and drabs of what they played on the local KorAm radio station. Fast forward through a brief moment of being an H.O.T fan, another brief moment of curiously watching Bigbang go thru competition before debuting, early to mid 2010s of casually dabbling kpop, and then finally late 2010s when I found THE group that everyone else had already found lol. Now: 12:13 The way army ears perk up instantly

This was an amazing video analysis! In Going Seventeen, the members had to escape a room singing karaoke. Now this was the first time I heard Korean 80's music. However, the sound was like something from the 50's when America already went toward Glam rock and other genres. So I was curious why Korea was "stuck" in that time period. You answered all my questions.

Well there's a reason why BTS calls seo taiji and only seo taiji their "father" and seo taiji after decades named BTS and only BTS his "successors". The other kpop groups in between these two artists and after work in a different plane whole together.

In simple words Seo Taiji paved the way and made the mark in the Korean pop history, and became the role model to the artists like bts... He is the constellation who moulded BTS to become the stars.... Thank you guys for enlightening us about the things we were not aware of 💜

Hi guys, this format really fits you two quite nicely. Even without your faces I still recognize your voice Danny. Thank you for an intro to SeoTaeji as Korean first Kpop founder. I know a lot more about Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson etc.. but didn’t really grasp Kpop until I discover SUJU and Roy Kim. Interesting history behind Korea after the Korean War. I learned about Korea watching M.A.S.H in the US.and it was kinda lopsided.
