GM of 1000IQ: Sam POLLOCK (habs 1970-1971) Sam Pollock set his eyes on the prize (pun intended) of the first overall pick in the 1971 draft. The draft was particularly interesting because there were two future legends that would be eligible: Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne. Either one would have been a fine selection, but legend has it that Pollock had his heart set on Guy Lafleur long before the draft itself. The problem was that the 1970-71 Canadiens were not in a position to be getting the number one pick. In fact, they won the Stanley Cup that year. Despite the team being quite successful, leading scorer Jean Beliveau was 39, playing in what would be his final season, and Pollock knew he needed to get some talent to replace him in the lineup. While the team had a great core of players, it needed a show-stopper and Pollock was looking at Guy Lafleur to be that guy. Since that was what he wanted, it was imperative that he make a move to get the pick that he would need in the draft. So, Sam set his sights on a team that is no longer a member of the National Hockey League: the California Golden Seals. If you don't know NHL history well, yes that was an actual team and you are right to laugh at their silly name. The Seals were quite a poor team in 1970-71 and it seemed they were poised for last in the NHL and thus the first overall pick. Figuring the Seals were bound for the last placed finish, Pollock persuaded Seals owner Charlie Finley to trade their first overall pick and Francois Lacombe to Montreal for the Habs' first round selection and Ernie Hicke. Many have said this was simply an example of Pollock taking advantage of an inexperienced owner, but you can't argue with the result. While the Canadiens now had the pick they wanted, the Los Angeles Kings began to play even more poorly than the Seals. Pollock was in danger of losing his first overall pick, which was unacceptable to the Habs GM. Pollock decided to try and give the Kings a little boost so that they would not wind up "winning" the first pick in the subsequent draft. He offered the aged-but-valuable Ralph Backstrom to the Kings, receiving in return Gord Labossiere and Ray Fortin. You've probably never heard the names Labossiere and Fortin, because they were both completely inconsequential players. Backstrom was instrumental in helping to lead the Kings out of the basement, finishing just ahead of the Seals, giving Montreal the first overall pick.

He also made a trade in 1976 i believe to get a 1980 1st round pick. That was the year Gretzky was to be available for the draft. Unfortunately the rules changed between 76 and 80 as the WHA and NHL merged he wasn't available for the draft. The 1st rounder did become the 1st overall pick that they instead used on Doug Wickenheiser

@@Brandon-qd2lb I'm not worried as a Wings fan... Yzerman has proven himself enough as a great GM. He was GM for Team Canada and he led them all to gold medals. There's something about him that players look up to and suddenly have the spirit of champions. I remember how people were mad at how he didn't pick a lot of top scorers for Team Canada because he made sure he picked the right players to form a great team chemistry (he didn't even initially pick his own boy Martin St-Louis which caused angers). Gretzky made people happy by picking up only top scorers for Team Canada but the team didn't even make it far. Yzerman's ultimate test was having to manage a team that was often near the bottom and Tampa Bay was one of them. He had to build a team around Stamkos. It took years but he made it happen. Was there luck? Of course there's a little bit of luck in every thing but Yzerman has what it takes. He talks directly to the coaches, the players, etc. Despite being a GM, there's still a "Captain" in him that boosts the team's moral into success like he did as a player with 3 cups. With the Red Wings, it's just a new start as a GM. He did say that Wings fans will have to be patient as it will take years to make the Red Wings a winning team again. Just like how it took years with Tampa.

Funny thing: Detroit under Ken Holland let Kyle Quincy walk on waivers so they could keep a 40 year old Chelios. Quincy went to LA, played well and then ended up in Colorado. Hard to go past the trade that brought in Philip Danault to Montreal... Danault and a 2nd pick (which turned out as Alexander Romanov) for Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann, which both of them left after that season. There is also the Martin Erat and Michael Latta for Filip Forsberg that was a master trade by David Poile. Another one good move by Bergevin was trading Max Pacioretty for Nick Suzuki, Tomas Tatar and a 2nd round selection in 2019. This trade at first made Bergevin looks like a genius, although Max Pacioretty came back from the ashes the season after to have a good season. But it's still one of the best trade by Bergevin so far, even if the best ever trade for Bergevin was the acquisition of Philip Danault.

It always sucks when somebody builds a great core but gets fired so somebody else can get the credit. Some guys just know hockey. They can recognize talent on the ice, in the front office, and on the bench. Then there are guys like Peter Chiarelli who can't do anything.

One I would have added was Pierre Dorion's Erik Karlsson trade. It is still too early to properly judge that trade, but it is looking more and more like San Jose lost that one big time; especially if you consider that Erik Karlsson's contract is looking like it might become an albatross. If one or more of Stützle, Norris or Balcers ends up being really good, I would say that Ottawa won that trade big time.

This wasn’t about value, it was about the more strategic mindset that went into a trade. Yes there has been more lopsided trade, but those could be sprung from the situation the team was in, aka Carter not wanting to be in Columbus and so LA took advantage of their situation. Whereas Steve Yzerman scouting Brayden Point and trading up last second to draft him, is very different

The Blue Jackets sent 3 draft picks that didn't pan out to Philadelphia in exchange for Sergei Bobrovsky. 2 Vezina trophies later, I'd say the Blue Jackets won that trade big time. It might be too early to judge that Vegas - Ottawa trade, we don't know who Ottawa may draft with that 2nd round pick in 2020 or who they might trade it for.

that's not a win lol. Canucks were offered 7OA additional pick and top prospect for Schneider by the Oilers. Which means, they could have gotten Horvat at 7, and had another pick and prospect. All because they didn't want to trade him in division that made no difference anyway in 4 years when Schneider would fall off a cliff

Super excited to see if the Kraken can replicate even a bit of what Vegas did. I'm sure GMs learned a lot since then, but with the exact same expansion rules AND the salary cap in our favor, it will be exciting.

In 1990 the NJ Devils traded Tom Kurvers to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 1st round pick in 1991. The big star of that draft was one Eric Lindros. Lo and behold the Maple Leafs had a brutal season, and were in the running for the 1st overall (That would have to go to the Devils). Fortunately for Toronto they would finish with the SECOND worst record, and had to only surrender the 3rd overall pick instead of Lindros. UNFORTUATELY for Toronto the pick turned out to be Scott Niedermayer who would become one of the greatest defensemen in NHL history.

The notorious Scott Gomez has got to be on that list with McDonagh, Higgins going the other way. Gomez did zilch in MTL while being one of the top salaries league-wide at the time. I think he almost went a whole calendar year without scoring a goal. Highway robbery.

I think it's a stretch to call the Yzerman draft pick trade up a 500 iq trade UNLESS Minnesota was actually going to pick Braden Point. But I HIGHLY doubt they would have. Therefore, Yzerman would have gotten Point at pick 80 anyways. So really he just likely gave away a 7th round pick for nothing.

I think the panthers taking Carter verhage or however it’s spelt was a great trade they took a 4th line guy from the Stanley cup champions and immediately fit him on the top lines for Florida proving he has the depth to be on those lines even against his former team mates

A classic that should have been on the list: Montreal trading for the Guy Lafleur pick. Montreal acquired the Seals' first round pick to get a shot at Guy Lafleur, as they rightly assumed they would be dogshit. Unfortunately, LA was worse than the Seals. So the Habs GM made a losing trade to improve them. It worked! LA got better and the Habs picked Lafleur at 1OA.

In March of 2022 galaxy brain GM Steve Yzerman traded Nick Leddy and Luke Witkowski to St Louis in exchange for Oskar Sundqvist, Jake Walman, and a 2nd in the 2023 draft. After a solid year of hockey for the Wings, Sundqvist was flipped to Minnesota for a 4th and Jake Walman is now a 1st pairing dman and a fan favorite in Detroit. Paired with Mo Seider they're also among the best dpair in the league analytically. Yzerman the wizard has also inked Walman to a bargain basement 3x$3.4m deal to ensure that the pairing remains in place. This already incredible trade only gets better when one considers that Leddy was not part of the long term plan in Detroit and we have to wait till after draft day to see what those 2nd and 4th rounders turn into. Yzerman is, imo, the best GM in the league, with Sakic the runner-up. Other GMs should just not answer the phone when these guys call...it can't end well for them.

At the 2011 Draft the Ducks traded a 1st round pick (#22) to the Leafs for picks (#30) and (#39) With their pick the Leafs took Tyler Biggs while the ducks took Rickard Rakell and John Gibson. On day two of the same draft the Ducks traded their 6th round pick to the Leafs for a 2012 6th round pick. With that pick the Ducks took Josh Manson while the Leafs took Ryan Rupert in 2012. So in one draft Anaheim was able to select a starting goalie, top 6 winger and a top 4 dman. The Leafs draft two players who were fringe AHL guys spending most of their careers in the ECHL. Still pains me as a Leaf fan. On a side note the Ducks also drafted William Karlsson in 2011 but thst has nothing to do with the Leafs, just an insane draft for Anaheim.

I still don't understand how Brayden Point who put up 91 points in 72 games in his draft year fell to the third round (79th overall). To make a comparison, Connor Bleackley who is also a center and roughly the same size was drafted in the first round 23rd overall after putting up 68 points in 71 games and he has yet to play an NHL game.
