I worked security at the Greg Norman classic many years ago and remember John Daly showing up to the locker room around 8am after apparently being out all night at the Casino. He threw up a few times in a bin and the other golfers were laughing but he still went out to play his round. He was friendly and down to earth and was nice to the staff unlike some of the other golfers

The great thing about John Daly is that, more than any other pro golfer I've ever seen, when you watch him, you think, "That guy's a schlub just like me." You can imagine for just a second that even though you're no prime specimen of humanity, maybe you could do something like that too. You can't. Nobody but Daly can. But it's a really attractive dream.

No, really, you can. But you need his perseverence. Ever thought about? Everything in this man's life always turned out anti-golf. So many setbacks, so many gambles gone wrong, so much pushing back and backlashes he had to endure. And what does he do? Play on and on. This is what makes Daly Daly. Not drinking, not being a long hitter. But never stopping to have at it.

He came to my city to play in a corporate tourney when I was in 1st grade. My dad came and swooped me from school in the middle of the day to take me to see him. I didn’t know too much about who he was until my dad filled me in on the legend. We were standing in a packed crowd away from the action where I was standing w my dad with a hat he had just bought me wondering if I would be able to see this guy everyone’s losing it over. Soon enough, there he was. Walking towards his shot a little past where we were. He saw me with my dad where I held out my hat for him to sign in the crowd and as cool as he was he walked right up to us and started to sign it. He didn’t even have to either, he was far enough away that he could have just ignored us but he didn’t. I’ll never forget what he said: “skippin’ school to come out here huh? I like that.” He handed back my hat and proceeded to schwack the living shit out of his next shot and sparked a cig right after. That was almost 20 years ago and I’ll never forget that moment as long as I live as it’s one of my favorite moments with my dad…..I still have the hat.

I'm just so amazed at this guy's pure raw talent and work ethic. This guy is just so good! And I think it shocks people because ever since the the War on drugs, the government has painted all addicts as monsters and failures and everyone just eats it up and believes it without question. When that isn't true at all. Plenty of people are functional addicts and are extremely successful. They aren't bad people. Addiction is a mental illness. And yeah there are bad people who are addicts, but there are bad people who aren't addicts. Being an addict has nothing to do with whether or not you're a bad person or a failure. And the culture makes you believe the exact opposite of that. It's really sad. Statistically someone you know and admire is a secret functional addict and you have no idea.

Then there's Trump, but I digress. No formal PGA W's, just venues to host'em. Late 1994, I showed up early every morning after being dropped off by my father at the Dairy Queen down the hill from Oakmont in Pennsylvania. Running to the gate of West flashing my pass and continuing to the driving range non stop from Tuesday through Sunday. US Open '94 The Big Easy took it. First time I ever met the Golden Bear. I was 12, and Jack was being carted off 18 green towards the clubhouse. I handed him my Oakmont magazine that featured Arnold hitting from the church pews on the cover. Jack scribbled his name over Palmer and looked back twice over right shoulder, then flung magazine into the air behind him being driven up to the lodge. I caught the book mid air and treasured that moment ever since. Daily, Pavin, Love, and Ernie were the ones to watch warming up for morning practice on range. One of my very first perfected shots was the Daily Flop. This green side recovery has been saving me strokes for nearly thirty years. I was raised with on high ethical standards behind the mountains where Palmer made his name. Small town called Russelltown, PA. My HS team home course was Pittsburgh International formally known as Deer Run. My Lowest recorded round in '99, a -4 68 from the tips. Played this venue nineteen times since then under different conditions yet haven't broken 70. When you're on it's best to remain hot, or you'll forever chase once was. Three spinal surgeries, and 25 yrs later I'm comfortable within my limitations regarding rotation. The only problem with being number one is that the feeling diminishes over time. The game in itself is what carries the legacy not shooting in the red. "Nicotine plus Caffeine equals Protein" Semper Fidelis.

John is the legend they don't want you to remember or love. I met him at a Pro-Am Tournament back in the late 90's. There was a long drive champion giving an exhibition on how to drive ...long lol before the start of the match. A crowd was surrounding this guy on a T box and he's going over all the technical things he does and how he can drive beyond anyone. John walks up cig hanging out of his lips watches this guy hit one and laughs. The guy asks if John cares to try, John dropped his cig on the ground pulled a ball out of his pocket just flopped it on the grass, no Tee, took his driver and crushed that ball, I mean crushed it! Crowd is cheering he says "You don't need any of that fancy crap just hit the damn ball". The long drive guy didn't even respond. John is a legend who plays by his own rules and that's why his fans love him!

He was my number two idol while learning to drive nukes coming up in my informal years. I had three 3Bill drive since the age of 13. Still have it on modified spine. Pre 90's I followed this fucker before it was frowned upon. Love III, Big Easy, and Pavin weren't too far behind as tee ball stretchers. He was my hero for bending the Golden PGA thumb. If it isn't by your way, someone else will surely show how it can be done. The Pros pre 2000's played with decorum for the game and not in pursuit of earnings. Different times that now have monetary outcomes. Good for them learning to walk on water, but your average world top ten can't splash a green side bunker inside ten feet with a 4iron.....

He and his son John II beat Tiger and his son Charlie in the PNC Championship in December 2021 by 2 strokes - that tournament is only open to father-and-son teams where the father or son must have won one major championship - previous winners include Angel Cabrera and his son, Stewart Cink and his son, David Duval and his stepson, Davis Love III and his son, Bernhard Langer and his son (4 times), so some talented guys there - John and John II were runner-up to Vijay Singh and his son in 2022.

I know people want to call him a legend and he's certainly unique... but I guarantee you we only see the absolute cleaned up version of him and thats pretty rough... more often he's broke, head in a toilet puking up Jack and M and M's crying for God to take it all away.

I went to a PGA event here and watched him practice on the range standing literally 20 feet from him. He seemed bored after a while, lit a new cig, turned 30 degrees right and started bombing drives over the range net onto an adjacent fairway where spectators were strolling before the event. They weren't strolling for long, it being like mortar fire, people running, John softly chuckling and sending it for a couple minutes. Seemed to pick up his spirits. Golf's true wild man.

While he stood directly behind me I was terrified. My massive drive sent the ball into the water like a Titan missile. I passed away, I'm sure, but somehow came back. If I remember correctly I think he shot around +6 for the day. The interesting thing was that he still hit the ball really far at that time but his short game was really bad that day. I remember watching him get a 9 on a par 5, but at the same time had a bunch of birdies and bogies. Every hole was like watching a totally different golfer in terms of skill level. If he'd managed to find a good coach in college instead of Mr. "Start Smoking", and kept himself sober and in shape, he'd probably be one of the top 2 golfers of all time. The fact that he's done as well as he has is purely a miracle. Not saying addiction is a lack of self-discipline or a sign of weakness...just if he had a better start to his career, it might have given him more incentive or a better chance at avoiding each new addiction.
