I thought I was watching an episode of Stranger Things with that intro music.. Extremely interesting result btw... I have a hypothesis. If the carbide component of any steel composition is the element most resistant to wear then by logic it would be the last item to "dull" when cutting. This means that all of the other material is simply there to hold the carbide in place and since it is a powder metal, it is very evenly distributed. Effectively, this test was carbide vs carbide. Perhaps this is not always the case as the steel composition just does not have enough carbide to be equivalent in most knife blades, so maybe REX 121 is the minimum tungsten carbide % to be equivalent of edge retention to that of actual straight carbide.
@macmurfy2jka
@macmurfy2jka 5 жыл бұрын
Cavedog my thoughts exactly. From reading the Rex 121 composition list it really is a super alloy that is used to cement a bunch of carbide aggregates togethers. Think of it like those diamond abrasive tools that use aluminum as the cementing agent. It makes sense then that the carbides both give up the ghost at the same time as ultimately they are the same ting, just held together by different cements.

I got a 20 year old cutting board I still use that looks brand new. It's a solid 3" thick end grain maple board. Every few years I just sand it down past the surface marks and it's like brand new again. It doesn't take more than 20 mins start to finish with the right tools, oil it up, wax it up and it's good to go for more years of use. It will probably last another 20 years if I continue keeping it dry. The issue would be the glue degrading or the blocks expanding/contracting too much.

Good job. Might be a better result because more sharpening gets to the tougher more stable steel as outpost76 is finding to be the case. Go easy on your shoulder now.. do something earthly like d2 from ganzo. I know many people would love to see how that "còokie crumbles" :7 maybe even get it new and put this sharpening theory to the test.. see does the number of cuts really dramatically increase in the first few sharpenings. And I told you to save that shoulder.. lol.. sorry but this would be an amazing series and discovery to see. (Hope you do it:)

Im yet to see a folder. Apparantly its very intense on the grinders and such, and a bit too finnicky to heat treat in bulk, but there are a few smaller fixed blade guys using it in smal batches. That being said, I woud expect the mad scientists and Spyderco will pick it up eventually.
