The DBK Boys landed their hands on a knife with Rex 121 steel. Maybe the hardest steel on earth.
Batonning… cutting… sharpening. For starters.. this knife was harder than the stones we sharpen it on..

Wow, can't believe diamond stones weren't abrasive enough. 72 HRC is INSANE!!! Maybe try "the beast" kme stone on it? It's a 50 grit diamond stone. It's small since it's meant to be used for KMEs sharpening system, but you could still use it as a small hand sharpening stone.
@andyy361
@andyy361 3 ай бұрын
Late reply, but you can't sharpen steel this hard at such a low grit. It will just create micro chips at the edge. A 400-600 grit diamond would be best for this steel.

I have a Creely Mako in Rex121 and I've been able to get it (keep it?) screaming sharp via 1) DMT diamond plates Coarse, Fine, Extra Fine + spyderco ultrafine ceramic + stropping with diamond paste and 2) the Gritomatic sourced Venev diamond water stones 240, 400, 800, 1200 + stropping with diamond paste. These are the types of abrasives to use for the high-carbide powder metal steels. I do the progression to get a nice polish on the edge but it isn't required. Once can have very sharp supersteel knife edges, shaving sharp, with a DMT double sided plate: course/fine + a leather strop with some 5 micron diamond paste. Not a very expensive sharpening set, and can be sourced on amazon or your favorite knife distributor. Save the japanese water stones and anything else based on Aluminum Oxide for the kitchen knives, the high carbon steels, and the basic (e.g., vg 10, 154cm, 440) stainless steels.

This was good and short. ...Too short. You guys mention your favorite steels all the time BUT: Have you guys considered making an opinionated video on the Balance between edge retention and The HRC factor? 🤔 What happens when survival goes for much longer than a week and living in the wilderness becomes a way of life? Cutting rope (assuming you can make rope) and chopping wood would be constant. How would you sharpen your knife? With a flat rock or brick? How does your Favorite Steels play into a hardcore challenge?? I remember these topics being touched on in previous videos but it would be great to see all this in 1 longterm setup.

Hello Mikkie and Marteen, Guys look, that's why regular hardness doesn't go that high since it's much better to bend an edge, not break one!!!😖😱😢🧐 Unless that Manufacturer will re-profile the edge at no cost, that's an expensive mistake! Even I'd rather have to constantly sharpen a knife then chance to break one, don't believe I'd want one. Thanks for your vids and this wonderful opportunity! I'll not hold my breath to win as I'd just pass out for nothing!😖 I'll keep my 🙏🏻🤞🤞 in Hope's of being chosen. Take care, "God Bless", sincerely, Randy. 👍👍🙏🏻😇👊

Glue a diamond sanding stone to a large Sawzall blade with epoxy. Clamp the Sawzall to a work bench. Adjust the speed to suit the stock removal. A stream of water from a container directed to area with a small hose will keep the heat low as you reprofile the chip out- faster than a human should be able to do.👍

The only thing remotely close to this i have sharpened is rex45 and that required DMT stones but its so fragile! As soon as you build up a burr/wire edge it just snaps off on the stone in long pieces that look about as thick as a hair its holds an amazing edge but it takes a very light hand and lots of stropping to get a fine edge without the edge crumbling off ! The knife i had was a spyderco pm2 rex45 and it was just too thin behind the edge to utilise this steel in any medium to hard use (for a folding knife) without getting chips or edge peeling even just sharpening a pencil etc (i kept the bevel pretty much at the factory geometry)

With a Rockwell hardness of 70-72 it's no wonder this thing retains its edge like that! I haven't decided if I want one. Probably. It's the hardest tool steel I've seen. My Nieto Chaman has a hardness of 60-62, which I thought was hard, and the NOC Knife has a hardness rating of 62-64, but this thing is from another PLANET! It's the vanadium content that gives these their extreme hardness. Okay, I want one!
