That sound is incredible. The stone has no bite to it. Much respect for these rope tests. They are rough on the body and I have only done a few.👍

Another great video mate. A light hand strop with balsa and 2.5 micron THK paste is my go to on a toothy edge. Just two single light passes each side. Seems to sort any minor burr and not effect the "teeth".

This is why I prefer a working edge like this. Guarantee if you tested it until it could no longer cut rope you would have a better result with 300 grit compared to a polished edge. This type of edge let's those carbides shine.

Peter, do you have kangaroos in your backyard? Lol, show us some Australia man. I hope you can do some videos like we spoke about. I'd like to see your town and country, and just some of your culture. If I send you a knife can you send me a vegemite sandwich? What the hell is vegemite? Lol, have a good day Peter and family!!!

Hey Pete ,great video, I love these steel tests . I tried a few of these extreme angles myself , but can't get them to work for me. I don't cut rope , but once a week I'll cut a few boxes of card board and my edges just roll , maybe cardboard is tougher on the edge , I don't know. I tried a 15° 1,000 grit polished edge on a Tenasious with 8cr and a Ruike with 14c28n and I only got about half the edge retention I would have gotten with my usual 20° edge , and both of them rolled from top to bottom which tells me the edge is too weak . I has hoping for 2-3 times the cutting ability but it was not to be . I guess pushing the blade through long cuts of cardboard is just too much on the edge . I think I'll try D2 at 15° next , on some cardboard , I'll let you know how I make out .

Old comment but maybe you will see this. That's a weak steel. If you want great edge retention, look for vg10 steel or better. Maxamet and rex121 are kings but very expensive. Vg10 is the best value I believe.

At 8:08 you are cutting against the grain of the paper, that's why the edge can't slice it ! But at 8:00 you are cutting with the grain of the paper, that's why the edge can slice it ! A very sharp edge can cut with and against the grain, but at a certain point of sharpness the edge can cut with the grain but not against ! You should always test the sharpness by cutting with the grain of the paper, not against !

It has somewhat more to do with edge finish than sharpness level - assuming they are both very sharp - as a knife that’s at the same level of sharpness can appear to not be so if it’s a coarse edge. It will be more aggressive and hurt a whole bunch when you cut yourself with it. A highly polished edge is far less aggressive and when you cut your self with it the first you know about it is when you see blood on something. With ultra light - less than the weight of the blade itself - finishing passes on a #300 stone you can get the knife to cut across the grain of newsprint.

That was not a too surprising result to me. When Rex stops cutting paper it is not entirely because it has dulled, but because the edge has accumulated fibers and such from the rope and the cutting board. This is why a quick stropping brings it right back, it cleans those fibers out. The finer the grit edge on Rex the better I expect it to perform in this particular test because there are less inclusions for fibers to accumulate. A 600 grit edge would probably do maybe 680 cuts.

The problem is that at a low grit the blade basically becomes a very fine tooth serrated knife. Great for cutting wood and rope but not for paper.
