This made for an excellent beginner tutorial. I didn't have any good hardwood so i cut off the end of a 2x4 and made one in about an hour and a half total using a combo of bandsaw, a 4.5 inch kutzall coarse shaping disc, a Dremel and some hand sanding. I need to get more small kutzall burrs. Being pine i dropped it and the tail broke off but no worries one of our cats is missing a tail so it is fitting.

How are you able to get the tail so thin and realistic? I try to watch and obviously I know why some parts are sped up but I’m having some trouble with the tail.
@LogsCarvingClubАй бұрын
The best thing is to use a wood that isn't brittle, such as maple, and have the tail parallel to the wood grain so it's less likely to break. Then as you're carving use almost no pressure against it, and use a bit that's sharp and not too aggressive, such as the 107. Go slow and remember not to push too hard against the thin parts while carving or you might snap it. Hope that helps!

@LogsCarvingClub2 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting idea, have you tried it?
@chrisstewart18632 жыл бұрын
@@LogsCarvingClub yes. I use them all the time to clean up my carvings. Only use white ones or they will stain your work. I use the part with the little screw in the end that you attach the small sanding discs to, can’t think of the proper name.

What type of wood do you feel is the best for dremel carving? I tried this project with pine and it didn’t seem like it sanded well. I’m also just starting out so maybe it’s me.
@LogsCarvingClubАй бұрын
Pine’s really hard to get a nice finish on, try and use a hard wood. For common ones I use walnut, mahogany, and maple usually.

Thank you! Also, what was the approximate size of that cat? And the thickness of the board you used? I think the one I made was too big.
@LogsCarvingClubАй бұрын
@@johnsol200 Just measured it, it’s 2in long, 2in tall (top of the tail), and 1in thick, so I’m sure I used a 1in thick board. This cat was walnut I think.

i have a question : (i dont know a thing about wood ) . is it possible to cut a branch (like 4 inches in diameter by 6 inches long ) off an oak tree and use it to carve something like this? or does it have to be dried out after i cut it off the tree ? im not sure where i can get the wood i need to carve .
@LogsCarvingClub2 жыл бұрын
You can probably cut 4 inches of green wood pretty easily with the 561, I‘ve never used fresh wood because I worry it’ll warp as it dries (it also needs to be dry to take up oil well). I also like cut hardwood because it makes it easy to get the feet of the animal level. Otherwise I don’t think using a branch would be a problem. I buy wood at lumber yards or Home Depot (or specialty wood stores). Usually you can get small amounts of hardwood that carve pretty well. I think soft woods are annoying but oak and other hardwoods would be good
