I like your honesty when you gave us your opinion about prices. I was watching, maybe yesterday night, another workshoper. He (as many others) They show off their jobs, but in the economical issues, it seems they don't care. Meanwhile, in the south (of América) we have to make a lot of saving efforts to be able to acquire a hand tool. Greetings from Mexico!

Thank you! I try to cut costs when I can but the hobby can definitely be more expensive than expected depending on what you use. It’s too bad I like using nicer woods that get pricey but sometimes some regular pine does the trick perfectly

The poplar and blue gum pieces were the prettiest to me. I started doing a little woodworking recently to try and make a little extra money. Make up for this inflation since I didn't prepare well for retirement. My older brother passed away last year and I came across a cane in my shed I think he had started years ago. Turned out it's cedar. I have a cheap little rotary tool but it does pretty good. I know what you mean about those growth rings being harder. Having to be careful to not get the softer part of the wood from being deeper cuts than the harder part. Nice carvings and good video. Thanks for the info of different types wood.

Could you make a tutorial for the dinosaur please?? It looks amazing
@LogsCarvingClub
@LogsCarvingClub 3 ай бұрын
Hopefully someday! The Dino was made with pretty fresh eucalyptus (cut a couple weeks prior) several years ago. I remember it was much slower to carve than most woods I’m used to. Unexpectedly hard wood.

Have you worked with Ebony? It polishes to high shine-it does look like black plastic. Or Ziricote? Very pretty, polishes well. Both are hard , very hard woods. Both have their cons, between brittle with Ebony or cross grain in places (may have) with Ziricote. But the beauty they hold can be worth the effort...Also, the plywood rhino was the cutest!

I’ve used ebony, but never heard of ziricote. I’d love to try it! Exotic woods are a favorite part of the hobby. I agree with the ebony it ends up looking like plastic! Have to make sure people who see it know it’s really wood when the grain is so fine. Thanks for the idea for ziricote, where do you get it?

I have gotten my Ziricote at Gilmers exotic wood supply in Portland Oregon. @@LogsCarvingClub

I buy out of the bargain barrels for the best prices. But they have many small sizes of all kinds in the knife handle supply section also. Maybe they call them 'blanks'(?)

Can you comment on basswood for Dremel carving? It seems to be everywhere but mostly described for hand carving. Love your channel and content!
@LogsCarvingClub
@LogsCarvingClub 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I like basswood but only for rough large carvings, like in my wood spirit video. You can carve it with a dremel like butter, but it just doesn’t finish well since it’s so soft and it’s not very pretty since the grain is so plain. I guess if you’re painting it it doesn’t matter

So, with the purple heart, does it oxidize quickly if you use a sealer on it? Do you have any info about that?
@LogsCarvingClub
@LogsCarvingClub 2 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit of a naturalist in that I don't really mess with most sealers, I usually just use a natural oil and wax. I'm also not sure if it's oxidation or UV, or both, so a UV protectant may prevent the browning.

Where do you get your black walnut from? Just got into carving and trying to find some affordable wood, love your videos!

If I need very thin planks I go to Home Depot, for thicker blocks to carve I use cutoffs from a friend who makes furniture, go to a rockler woodworking location (a little more expensive), or buy cutoffs from a local exotic wood store (they’re irregular but well priced)

How about carving MDF with rotary tools?
@LogsCarvingClub
@LogsCarvingClub 11 ай бұрын
That’d probably not work well, I don’t think it would be dense enough to get a decent product that you could sand or oil
@mohitrahaman
@mohitrahaman 11 ай бұрын
@@LogsCarvingClub OK, I will try myself on the dense ones. The MDF sold around my place here actually routes really well without chipping off, better than some grainy hard woods. They might as well be HDF than MDF. I will try working my dremel on them, which are relatively low RPM than routers, and see for myself today. I almost forgot that I own a dremel and thus wondered how others are doing it on YT. Your work pieces look high quality.
