I'm playing as Joseon (Korea) at the moment, and my campaign has been incredibly fun. Starting as a somewhat technologically behind state with feudal laws and being a subject of the Qing, I found it a lot of fun to industrialize, gain independence, and bully the Dutch East Indies and Indochina. #12 by 1888

My first proper run (had a few "false starts" as I was learning the game) was as Brazil, and I agree it's a great choice. Easy access to a wide variety of resources, a blank slate to build you own custom industrial base, immediate regional dominance... honestly the only downside is the political situation, but even with my rookie fumbling I still managed to get slavery banned 40 years early!

noice. I did Gran Colombia and became #3 overall by the end. New Granada starts in a decent position and Brazil becomes a natural rival. Basically you fight over who's the super power of South America. I got both canals, Suez and Panama, which kinda made us the premier canal builders of the world I guess. Definitely suggest it.

Doing An Egypt campaign and formed Arabia. Was fun subjugating all those minor nations. only thing keeping me in credit was the diplo income from the horn of afriaca and arabian lands. Its now turned into a race for africa gameas i have colonisation maxed and am chasing france and britain for provinces.

can you give a little more details on getting the heavenly kingdom? the british have hong kong after i capitulated and its now 1840 but no heavenly kingdom events have gone off. do i need to capitulate into being forced to have free trade too? are you playing before the patch that keeps the game from ending up with variety of singular pops so a singular protestant is now really hard?

Minor note about Lanfang: It's also a very good candidate for the Serf's Up Achievement (start as a nation with Serfdom and implement Worker's Protections.) Lanfang has Serfdom to begin with, but the gold fields and liberal laws mean that the Landowners are quite weak and relatively easy to marginalize further. Plus the very wealthy standard of living that the gold gives means that Trade Unions can get very high clout without too much issue.

Hawaii and the Indian Territory (probably the hardest start in the game) are also pretty fun. In South America, Peru-Bolivia is a better nation than Brazil because you have oil and Brazil doesn't at the start.

New South Wales is a ton of fun to build tall. It gets the same diplomatic options of confederating the other territories, ability to colonize nearby islands that Britain has taken, engage in diplomatic plays as a dominion, and just PRINTS money through the bajillion gold mines it gets over its existence. Not to mention that there is so much land to go around, immigration-maxxing is a huge benefit.

I think Korea is OP the first game I played I became a great power as them, puppeted Japan and conquered most of indonesia. I was highest standard of living on the Great Power list, highest GDP per capita in the world, highest literacy on the Great Power list. But 90% of the game I just built buildings even if they didn't give me any money and it took me ages to remove serfdom because I didn't realise I had to remove the Yangban officials from my government (It's a bit silly that I can't just pass laws as an absolute monarch, I had two civil wars anyway why not just allow me to go through the civil wars without the legislating time?). Also most of my country were peasants until the 1900s when I realized I had to build loads of rice farms to turn them into workers but this tanked my economy for some reason.

Afghanistan has been my favorite playthrough thus far, and actually, a country I highly recommend for beginners. They have everything you need to succeed in the beginning, and their neighbors have nearly everything you need to succeed in the mid and late game, not to mention the decent cores you can acquire from the surprisingly generous Pashtun homelands not to mention the Central Asian heritage
