Thank you for acknowledging that living to 100 as invalids, and having our children take care of us for the last 10 years, is not what most of us want. Not many muscular men who talk about bio hacks acknowledge it. I know many middle aged women (and some men, but few), who had to give up their lives to care for a parent who is no longer able to care for themselves, often for years. They are miserable and guilt ridden for wanting it to be over. For wanting more in their lives than changing adult diapers and watching their parent die piece by piece. Most have resolved to never do it to their children, or at least to do all in their power to avoid it. It is my primary motivation to exercise and to learn every bio hack that may help preserve health span. But as a coffee lover, this one is nice to know.

My father began to reduce his coffee consumption when his health started to decline. When health deteriorates, the body often becomes less capable of handling a lot of caffeine... so I think it's a case of reverse cause and effect. Healthy people tend to drink more coffee because their bodies can cope with the caffeine. I've noticed this with my friend too. He gained some weight, drank excessively, and then started telling me that he can't have more than 1-2 cups of coffee anymore without experiencing palpitations.

I quit caffeine during law school. Instead I improved my habits of diet and exercise. When I was too tired to study more, I rested. Often I would rest for 20-40 minutes and solutions would flood into my mind. This was MN, so I was one of only 2 people in my class not using caffeine and other “alertness” drugs. Just sleep, exercise and hydration (and meditation). My memory, relationships, happiness and grades were optimal. I finished my 4 year night program in 3 years with honors etc etc. And bought a new bicycle with all the money I saved. I still avoid coffee and sugar am 42, weigh 160lbs at 6’2” and can keep up with my kids on the ski slopes. Drink 4 cups of coffee to live long and happy? No. But stay hydrated - drink at least 4 cups of water. Herbal organic peppermint tea for a hot drink is hard to beat and leaves me more clear headed.

Caffeine isn’t energy. It’s not a food. Food promotes energy. Caffeine is a drug that plays mind games. It’s false sense of energy might make you move more, but at what cost if your sleep suffers? Also, I’d like to have seen this study take decaf into account. The Swiss water process retains much of the polyphenol and antioxidant benefit of coffee without the caffeine. Not sure about the other methods. I too see the potential for reverse causality. Anyone with cancer undergoing treatment pretty much can’t stand the test of coffee. Folks with certain cardiac issues might be told to avoid it. Or people with bladder issues might also pass it up. Point is…correlation is not causation.

All I know is my father-in-law is 76 years old literally drinks about two pots of coffee a day that is no exaggeration. He drinks Trader Joe’s, and he puts nothing in it. Just flat out coffee that man at 76 is busier than most 30-year-old, I know of, now he does take a blood pressure pill to lower his heart rate which his doctor did say, and large part was due to his coffee intake. However, he did not care. He still drinks his coffee to this day. Now this is my opinion, the worst part of coffee in general is what most people put in it, most people who drink coffee do not drink coffee they put tons of creamer or sugar or syrup or whatever flavoring in it. None of those things are good for you just my two. Cents.

Maybe you should lecture someone who actually has a BAD habit like oh I don't know drinking alcohol, smoking mj or cigarettes. Coffee is NOT bad for you. Yes I drink 6 cups a day. I have been a runner for 34 years averaging 40 to 60 miles a week and lift weights 4 times a week. I have never been overweight, never touched alcohol or drugs. I write this as an avid coffee drinker, who hasn't had coffee in 2 weeks and has been drinking tea due to all the negative press that coffee is getting right now. studies show that coffee is constricting your blood vessels. As all these studies are coming up against coffee. My feeling is the big coffee heads are panicking and doing damage control. I'm now seeing articles and suggested videos with positive coffee data. This seems too sus! You are suggesting that caffeine intake will help you stay active. You could have suggested that caffeine can be obtained from Green tea or black tea or matcha. But you didn't this is why this is so sus! Maybe the studies of coffee having negative affects is real why else would all of a sudden such positive light is being shined of coffee.??

I start my day with chicory "coffee" and then make 100% organic Kona coffee with heavy whipping cream, made in a French press, to take with me to work. Once I get to work I've usually finished all of the Kona coffee, so I do a Keurig cup (I buy my own) in the machine at work. If I need something else hot to drink during the day, I had been doing decaf k-cups, but now I can't find decaf k-cups where I shop, and ordered chicory k-cups. I don't snack at work, but I do drink coffee or tea. Before using k-cups I brought my own instant coffee and instant heavy whipping cream powder and made coffee that way at the various office locations where I work.

I'd like to think you're right, but your buddy @PaulSaladino says this about coffee on his website - Coffee is made from a plant seed, a burned plant seed to be exact… Some call it roasting, but it’s really just burning. So, in short, coffee is burned seed water. Coffee seeds present the same problems as any seed specifically, they too contain defense chemicals, like digestive enzyme inhibitors, etc. In the case of coffee, one of the main defense chemicals is caffeine. No, it's not a vitamin - it’s a methylxanthine compound that you probably love, but that can also cause erratic blood sugar levels. Most coffee is full of pesticides, acrylamide (a potential carcinogen and neurotoxin), mold toxins (mycotoxins), and compounds that block opioid receptors (which typically regulate pain, reward and addictive behaviors). Is it really surprising that there may be serious issues associated with drinking burned plant seeds? I think not. As for the “benefits” you’ve been told about, both observational epidemiology and interventional studies don't suggest any unique benefits that can’t be achieved through animal-based eating, fasting, saunas, cold plunging and exercise. Coffee is a clear net negative for humans. Listen, if you are truly thriving, don’t change anything about your diet… BUT I have seen SO MANY people find health improvements when they cut out coffee - I would be remiss if I didn’t share my ideas about this.

The Spanish coffee thing may not simply be because it's unfiltered. It maybe be due to a higher sugar amount (I just read that they roast the beans with sugar). Also it maybe due to the difference in robusto beans vs arabica. Or that they roast it darker (which removes some of the caffeine). Or possibly, a combination of all the above. I wish this study included those that drink decaf (which does contain far less caffeine)
