I hope 30k models continue to be sculpted in this scale, because I would kill for regular Aquila armour in this height to sprinkle into my intercessors for my Imperial Fists army

The veterans kit with its very close size also makes for great bits for both old-school Marines and primary marines, which I like very much

Also as a note, there's a Deathwatch upgrade sprue sold separately, with I believe 24 DW shoulder pads. They fit both Firstborn and Primaris kits well. Its fun to have around just to sprinkle a Deathwatch veteran or two in an Astartes force, it makes for some nice storytelling.

The Veteran kit is a pretty good one in GWs line up for SM. The start collecting box set was really good as well (2x 5 man Vets, Capt Artemis and a Dread). The only downside to the old Ball-and-socket joint for thr first born is that it can be limiting in poses and they can look unnatural with some of the loadouts. Im hoping GW will follow the Assault intercessors system of having a dynamic pose for bodies and then giving arms that can fit all.

The assault intercessor kit made me a believer in primaris sculpts. Love their natural but dynamic posing. Nice video!

The Deathwatch kill team was the second kit I ever got for 40k and I really like it. I still use some bits from it to spice up firstborn marines and I plan on eventually getting another one for Kill Team.

I just picked this kit up, and much like the Tactical Squad kit, I wish GW sold a separate upgrade sprue of just legs, torsos and backpacks. Other than that, this kit is fun for having so much to build with.

Interesting to see those sprues today, I was building Rubric Marines over the week-end and the layout and parts density is exactly the same, they are from about the same era I think. Overall I much prefer the new philosophy with the more dynamic designs, but for Rubrics, it works perfectly: they are not meant to be dynamic, they are relentless shooty automata.

If you put these legs on an old tactical marine torso, you can't go back. they look so much better it's hard to describe! I just immediately felt like yes, this is it, once seen there's no going back to the old legs. Overall the models are still too slender, but that height difference improves them 100%. If I ever get around to building a completely new firstborn army, I'll just use the heresy kits

Honestly, these guys and the Horus Heresy MK3 and MK6 kits blow the primaris minis out of the water.

Yeah, those are probably the "Primaris prototypes"... ;) At least the Deathwatch veterans were the first instance of GW trying to move away from the old Space Marine look & feel that at this point was almost unchanged since 1998.

@@_R0adki11 I know that. I just wanted to say that the Deathwatch minis were GWs first try to give the marines a more "true scale vibe" with longer legs ans slieghtly longer torsos.

I love the Deathwatch kit, the size increase is definitely noticeable, even the torsos are wider than tactical marines, which does limit their compatibility with older firstborn kits. You certainly CAN mix deathwatch torsos with tactical legs, but everything looks a little off. I really like these Mk8 leg designs, and much prefer the round kneepad to the kneepads of the primaris marines. Interestingly the captain from the Space Marine Heroes tactical marines has the same legs. I think the stubbier swords and mauls were pretty neat, they help reinforce visually how the unit would probably get deployed in all sorts of confined underhive or space hulk environments where a fancier blade might not be suitable. My favourite design choice they made was the smaller bolters which are more clearly intended to be wielded one-handed. It is a bit funny though how they're the same size as heavy bolt pistols on assault intercessors now. I think the points around unlimited variety not necessarily creating actually good poses are fair, as you say there are definitely pros and cons to both, and you can't really get a best of both worlds situation without providing hundreds of extra parts in each kit that won't all get used. That said, I don't think players who prefer pose-ability are seriously asking for hundreds of potential poses. Primaris marine poses look great, but I feel like they can be frustrating for an army. Once a squad starts having 2 of every leg+torso combination the duplicates tend to stand out no matter what you do with the arms. Firstborn kits like the deathwatch vets get away with repeated legs because there isn't a great amount of variance between them, so no leg poses stand out too much. There are certainly other armies that have it worse though so I don't have that much to complain about. Death Guard have incredibly unique body + leg designs, but as a consequence require a lot of converting to avoid having duplicates of each uniquely placed chest mouth and tentacle. I think the higher detail + limited poses approach is one GW is quite happy with at this point and everyone's just got to manage their gripes with it in whatever ways they can. I certainly like primaris, and will continue to buy them, but I do really value being able to rotate torsos slightly. I find with units like primaris I have to think much more about if I want to use "the left leaning guy" for one weapon or another, because I simply don't have a spare guy that will work for 2 sets of arms that'd work on a left leaning guy. The "firstborn promise" is that you can worry less about those sorts of decisions, and it's an acceptable tradeoff for me.

I think the Primaris make these guys look silly. It's a shame. I need a bunch for my army, but am reluctant to buy them, for them to either be replaced or un-existed, in 11th. Releasing a new upgrade sprue with weapons and bling would fix it.
