It's crazy how releasing a bunch of ladybugs is considered environmental terrorism yet owning several private jets and using them as often as you want isn't.

Michigan Dept of Ag. released Japanese lady bugs (breed more aggressively) and for about 10 or 15 years they were household pests. Now they only show up once in a while. Lady bugs eat aphids which are vampire bugs. Saves MI farmers over a $1B every year. However, unlike natives they will sometime bite. Very itchy. I have 2 bites now.

I remember growing up in Texas we had a cricket invasion. The crickets covered the outside of our home. Some found their way in. I went to stay with a friend. The city came out and took care of them for us.

I live in southern/central Canada and I remember a few years when we had massive ladybug migrations. We had only the red ones that were cute and friendly, but then we got the yellow/orange ones that bit people. It sucked. We still have both kinds but it's not as bad as it was back then.

Loads of people release small numbers of lady bugs as they are good for pest control. As a kid, my friends and I would go to the swamp and collect a few tadpoles to watch them morph and then take them back to the swamp. Some got away but returned most of them.

You used a lot of snow geese footage when you were talking about canadian geese. Are you sure you didnt get confused between the two? I know you're allowed to hunt as many snow geese as possible during the autumn due to their overpopulation, but you need a permit for canadian geese.

The frog thing is interesting tho. About 20 years ago when I was young we had a invasion of toads in our nighboorhhood and surrounding areas. Could bearly walk for atleast a few weeks without kicking or stepping on one and the roads were just smothered in smashed dead toads. Never questioned why. We lived on the outskirts of the city near the industrial zone so kinda assumed that a good amount justade it to the pond industry's had in the area which of course had no fish. But now that I think about it wasn't long later that they started releasing brim into these man made ponds. Maybe to try avoiding that again.

I remember the lady bug summer in the 70's, they laid on the curb in millions 😱 And canada gees has also spread to europe. In the seventies, they was a sensation. In the eighties, they was rare, but not unseen. In the nineties, they was a normal breeding bird. Now they are seen as invasive, and are a popular bird for hunters.

Though most are edible, the risk of intestinal parasites is high. In a survival situation you must ensure they are cooked throughout lest a parasite or egg remain alive and choose you as the new host.

You can buy lady bugs to release, it's supposed to be for gardeners. There's no downside done in reasonable quantities. You know, like 5,000/acre or 10,000/hectare of farm crops. No, really no downside. The biomass is nothing. Most will die and never be eaten because they decay so fast. They become food for birds and some other creatures, but most birds/insects/frogs/etc... don't eat them. So, it's pretty much harmless. Releasing 10,000 frogs in a small space on the other hand can be devastating.
@larrybremer493017 күн бұрын
It's almost certain Lionfish in the Atlantic were released pets. I have kept Lionfish in my home aquariums. They are fantastic to look at and very hearty, easy to care for, but they do have high appetites and get very big. Since any fish or invertebrate that can fit in another fish's mouth will eventually make it's way there (this is a truth about any fish and many animals in general) Lionfish are not desirable to keep except in species isolation or with other large fish that they cannot predate on. I think a few aquarists got smaller ones that when they got bigger become more trouble than was bargained for, so they let them loose in the sea rather than rehome or euthanize it. I live in California where a tropical species of the Pacific like a Lionfish cannot survive in our cold sub-tropical water but in Florida and the Caribbean they were able to live and flourish since its also tropical water. The problem is the Atlantic lacks many of the predators that are specialized eaters of scorpionfishes (which lionfish are a member of) so their numbers grow unchecked and only held at bay be depletion of food resources for them.

What would happen if there was a locust or cricket swarm infestation with a frog swarm. All at the same time and place? Would they just balance each other out and we wouldn't even notice?
@wiidragon758817 күн бұрын
Sadly, the apatite war ends up in the locust's victory in that situation. They are also a lot more mobile than the frogs and will chew through larger foes like an army of stingerless ants. As the frog is busy swallowing down the one locust it has in its mouth already, 2 other locusts are already going for the frog's eyes while others are looking for soft spots to rip into. Brutal, merciless, ravenous...
