Austin, now that you’ve reviewed a Gibson Fender style guitar why don’t you review a Fender Gibson style guitar! The Fender Robben Ford Signature Model from the early 1990s is very much constructed like a Gibson Les Paul Standard (double cut). Mahogany body/neck, carved flame maple top and a set neck with a 3x3 headstock w/Holly overlay and MOP inlay! BTW, As pointed out in another comment, at the 11:08 mark you can see the damaged ground shield of your middle pickup. Restoring that broken ground may fix the middle pickup’s output problem. Gibson calls those inlays “split-diamond”. Great review, thank you

Dude, You are such a wealth of knowledge and history. Gibson should be honoring and supporting your effort....but given their past...they'll probably just sue for image copyright. I'm impressed that a company can make almost every wrong decision and somehow manage to stay alive. I own one myslf....I love them and hate them. Gibson should always offer their proven design with modern designs. Cheers Trogly....Thanks for what you do.

This made me seriously laugh out loud. Having owned and sunk a ton of cash into fixing Les paul's to be right I will never own one again. 3 weeks ago I was at a GC, picked up a pretty Les Paul to give it a whirl. Was instantly reminded why never Gibson again. Completely missing the binding on the treble side of the neck. How it left the factory, I will never know.

Trogly, on some of your tone demos it seems like you're overloading the mic that's on your amp, so we can't actually tell what things sounds like, we just hear the mic clipping. I know you aren't an audio guy, but you've got these amazing guitars that you take so much time and care filming and we don't get a good idea what they sound like. Maybe consider reaching out to some of your KZbin buddies like Robert Baker for help? It could even be a mini series, I'm sure Sweetwater would be keen to help out.

One thing about these 'superstrats' from Gibson is that they always stay true to the set-neck, which is super-rare for this type of guitar. Most are either bolt-on or neck-through. The M-III is really nice because of this, with a really deep cutaway and no heel. It gives you great access to the upper frets that very few guitars can offer.

the middle pickup has a short, likely right where the wires come out from the back of the pickup, the insulation looked damaged. sometimes it isn't like a full on short but one strain of the multi strain wire is touching the ground. another issue could be the wiring.

Never ceases to amaze me how he can be so influential for the Gibson community and considered a knowledgeable guy when he says the most absurd cringey nonsense in pretty much EVERY upload - each one of his videos features at least a few instant migraine / face-palm 🤦🏻 moments and when you consider he has a very real and very strong influence on the prices of vintage and used Gibson instruments, it's a downright tragedy for the players who might have had access to a certain model that was priced appropriately letting the market determine the best value when this goofy derp-alert comes waltzing up into the conversation with a bunch of "these are just soooo underpriced and Gibson really needs to be selling these for much more.." or other such Judas behavior, like a traitor or turncoat who uses his clout to eff some of us out of any chance of ever owning a dream guitar or a chance to play a decent obscure model.. Sorry for the diatribe but man it really is a catastrophe letting this guy have such a loud voice in the used Gibson market and the fact that he has the ears of the suits and ties is infuriating because he NEVER uses that for the benefit of the consumer - it's always to chastise the execs for pricing too low 😡

@@mikexxx11 I'm reluctant to call Gibson shite, but since they charge so much for such notoriously sloppy QC... The nitro cellulose thing is bollocks and is often feels too thick on a few LP's ive tried - if Paul Reed Smith says a thin poly finish is good... A real step up from the DK3 would be a used USA Dinky/Soloist or a tidy Chushin Gakki built Soloist Pro. I have a 91 Soloist Pro and the neck profile is exactly the same as my USA SL2H, it even has the mother of pearl headstock logo and inlays. A Gakki built neck through Charvel isn't to be sniffed at either.

My advice to anyone wanting to work on or fix pickups...... Start buying non-working examples (cheap) and take them apart. Many times the main winding wire is broken and can be repaired. Its not rocket science, a person just needs experience taking them apart to see how they are made. Pickups are just one very long wire and a magnet(s). Good luck and may the Force be with you.

Man, this guitar looks great but I was sad to find out that the neck is 25 scale length. I want to get a Dean ML but I don't like the Dean headstock and I want to swap out the neck with an explorer style neck. I have yet to find any that are the right scale length (24.75) so it seems like I will have to make my own.

I'm kind of glad you put up that card at 2:21 that showed the old Norlin corporate address. I never knew they were based in Suburban Chicago, which I'm almost embarrassed to admit considering I grew up less than 50 miles from their office and I've owned a Norlin-era Gibson (1981 Sonex) since I was a teenager. I looked it up, and it looks like the office building that housed Norlin was recently razed, and is now owned by Puig Holdings, an apartment developer, so I think we can guess the final fate of that place.

Would think single coils some kind of fiberglass or nylon resin roughly ground That's from the observation apparently looks like a strat single coil and a tele A real stretch would be that the bobbins was made from some older circuit board material (such) and wound

I'm going to assume the guitar was dropped from the strap at some point because of a strap button failure hence the chewed up binding. Like the guitarist probably caught the guitar on the way down but the damage is done.

I had a 1990 Fire red Gibson SG, with a Floyd rose., with no pick guard. The guitar played awsum. The action and sound was perfect. The floyd rose was installed so nice. I wish I still had that Guitar. Little did I know, that you cannot even get something like that today. what I had before.

I just realized from watching this, I think they styled one of my guitars after this one. I've got an LTD m403 ht. It's got a flamed maple top with a mahogany body. It's the exact same shape, but with a reversed headstock. If they didn't model it after this Gibson, then it just so happens to look a lot like it. Mine is satin finished though. I'm thinking about polishing it to be shiny. I have my strat as my #1 right now, so it might be a fun, low risk project.

Nice guitar! I absolutely agree, the gloss black back body is very meh, with an almost certainly sticky neck finish. The Balsa wood in the body definitely reduces weight (mass), but is not a wood species I would think would be a good choice for a guitar build. I can't see it being suitable for the neck, just due to the softness, and especially due to the lack of rigidity. Still looks good.

Maple neck. My concern would be the tailpiece bolts being pulled out. I've seen a few cheap basswood superstrats with the Floyd posts leaning forwards.
