Not really. Even nowadays, the army rarely uses hardkill APS systems on the Abrams purely because it would destroy any functionality it would have with troops. Same reasy why they dont use ERA aswell I think, and instead went for composite armour. Soviet tanks in the 80s would use APS systems purely as a cost saving measure. In reality, ground clutter, mountains, buildings, and various other stuff would severely limit the APS radar. Basically outside of lab conditions, it was mediocre. The radar would also have to be able to track a target for a few seconds, before being able to make an actual firing solution. Theres a reason why the only APS the Americans were thinking of fielding, was developed in the 2000's, and was a severely limited version that would only be able to shoot a material directly downwards onto the incoming warhead, instead of intercepting it like Trophy APS would. Although even that was considered unreliable, even though it was modern day USA with genuinely good radar systems. The thing is, a 20% failure rate in Russia would be a ground breaking improvement, while in litterally everywhere else, it would be infeasible and would kill a program. TLDR: Russia puts shit into service even when its borderline unusable, while Americans would get publicly lambasted by congress for having a 10% failure rate. The Moskvas recent service records seem to support this.

Speaking of high velocity missiles, I'd like to go on a short tangent about the Nike Sprint air-defense missile. It was an American Cold War-era ABM system, that involved launching a megaton-range warhead at incoming ICBM's on an extremely high-speed rocket -- accelerations exceeded 100G's during the boost phase, and speeds of Mach 10 were reached in under 5 seconds. The heat on the body was so intense a special ablative coating had to be developed. In test footage, it looks like it been sped up but no, that actually how fast it is, and you can see the missile body glowing white-hot.

The big miss with this is that it's not affected by active protection systems. Hellfire, javelin etc struggle with these systems where losat did not. The other issue is time of flight. Modern air defense systems would love for helicopters to be unmasked for the entirety of the almost 30 second time of flight. As opposed to losats 4 second time of flight.

I don't think the humvee version would be too bad for war thunder think about it. GOD tier speed like the Type 93 for japan with all the gimics of light tanks (Spotting and now scout drone) BUT, AND HERE ME OUT. *Literally cannot do CQC.* This is because these missiles require distance to speed up and acquire penetration power. This means they have the oddity of having abysmal penetration at close range compared to other weapons. The penetration power would increase as long as the motor is still burning until it stops. Only then would penetration power once again decreases with distance. TLDR: It would only be usable at long ranges.

You should talk about the ACRA system. In war thunder it’s an 8.0 tank, but in reality it should have fought earlier tanks that we can see at around 7.3-7.7

KE missiles have a problem though, they all have a minimum range in order to get the penetrator up to speed, and that was several hundred yards. This meant that in urban and heavy forested encounters they would be worthless against armor.

Having explored this idea about a decade ago with a few others, we called them KAT (it should be obvious what that means). But we just for fun wanted to see if shoulder fired was viable. And depending on your definition of viable, it is. But as you can imagine weight and size is a problem along with back blast. Also range, not long range, short range. Because it can't really do shit if it hasn't built of any speed. Though would love to explore stuff like that again if I could form another independent research group (pretty much just a think tank). because I'd love to built a stealth drone, since the equations are public info and thanks to improved GPU's you can simulate a lot now. One interesting rough method is using ray tracing, which I had brought to my attention when talking about submarines. Which is super clever, since you can use to to see how waves impact an object. All be it not a perfect sim of radar.

@@cheyannei5983 only if the missile is going at speeds to create a plasma sheath... which is the same reason why modern ABM systems have a hell of a time in countering ICBMs, because the only real way to counter an ICBM is at the boost phase, as reentry has that plasma sheath involved... ... and the only way to _hit_ such an object is, simply put, using a UV-wavelength pulse laser. The reason being? This tiny tiny little thing called 'wavelength transparency'. Basically, non-opaque materials are transparent to certain wavelengths, like quartz to infrared/heat (which is why it's a popular option for a 'nuclear lightbulb' rocket... which is basically vaporized fission material undergoing fission contained in a 'lightbulb' which is then used to heat up propellant (and due to the fact that this is stupid hot, you can use _water_ as the propellant!) for thrust). Plasma is transparent to two wavelengths: UV (specifically near-vaccum and vacuum wavelengths) and X-Rays. Due to just how energetic this sheath is, you'll need to use a pulse laser (basically a laser that has rapid, short duration beams, essentially a weaponized strobe light) to get effective damage... ... you can see where this is going.

I think one of the bigger drawbacks cited for not adopting it was its effective minimum range. Since the missile needs to accelerate it would have no to a lessened effect to armored targets within 500 meters. at 500 meters it reached its maximum velocity, If I remember correctly, though it may have been more.

I thought it's about Spike NLOS, camera-guided anti-tank missile with 25km range. With this much range they could perform precise strikes at enemy air defense, artillery and command vehicles, that would normally only have to worry about airstrikes. Dedicated carrier for these missiles, Pereh, was build on M48 chassis, and featured a fake gun to look from distance like a normal Magach tank.

Hey Spookston, @ 2:52 you say a 9" rocket is smaller than a Zuni, Zuni is a 5" diameter rocket. Perhaps you were thinking of the 11.75" Tiny Tim? EDIT: I am apparently deaf, you said 9cm, which means you were correct at 3.5" or so vs 2.75" for FFAR and 5" for hydra. Damn unit conversions. Either way, interesting video about a dead-end concept. NLOS Fly Out and Update (FO&U) ATGM like FOG-M and EFOG-M (also Tamuz/Spike-NLOS) turned out to be the better idea. It was just a big pain in the ass to get around the weight issue. You need a big rocket to get a KE penetrator fast enough, even with some of the spicy RDX-base propellants or Boranated stuff.

back in the late 1980's I kept hearing rumors of a laser-guided ramjet round for the 106mm recoilless rifle. it was longer than a regular round, it had a tungsten core and a hybrid propulsion that was half solid rocket and half airbreathing ramjet. the conventional firing sequence would get the ramjet up to operating speed.."extremely fast" was all I could get. the laser was supposed to be mounted where the spotting rifle would normally go, and be operated using the existing firing controls for the spotting rifle. the whole project dropped off the map when the US reserve units finally retired all of their recoilless rifles around 1990 or so. it may have been a private venture to get the US military to buy recoilless rifles again, or to arm less capable nations with a high lethality kinetic tank killer.
