Strongest Soviets I have ever played was the Bukharin path providing you can assassinate Stalin early enough to not lose anyone important to purges. This allows you to avoid a civil war as well. Gets so many buffs to production and consumer goods to put on top of any industrial research you are doing that you can outproduce anyone in the world including the US easily.

It’s better to do the civil war as early as possible instead of the coup, If the strat for the civil war still works, where you convert all your troops to the shittiest possible, then when the civil war starts convert them to speedy troops

The assassination path is not worth it at all. Just fire the civil war and cheese it so you win by October 36, you save 5 focuses and can apply the Right Path industry boosts earlier

Downside is that if u get some debuffs to army/navy/air force (anti-soviet military thinking) u cant get rid of them without civil war so u get debuffed for the rest of the game

The buffs to production and civilian goods more than offset any debuffs you might get. Personally never had any issues with that and my goal every time I do this path is to avoid a civil war. Being able to build and then actually equip a massive army is the Soviets greatest strength. The Soviet Union even in the best situation is never going to beat the Germans with quality. Where the can beat the Germans is manpower, industry, and resources. Which the path takes and cranks up to insane levels. Those extra civilian factories can be used to make forts before the invasion, or building supply depots or increasing your railroad network. The extra production can be used to actually supply the largest army and air force in the world.

@@theoheinrich529 I used to agree, but… Recently I noticed that the resistance reduction that LW gives is more worth it than the very small compliance difference between it and CA. Also, you get compliance for what reason? More factories! 👍 Even if you want collab states, LW is almost as fast. Sometimes faster even, as the resistance gets much lower.

TBH I think it would make sense to have a path or fork in the focus tree that allows the Soviet union to forgo or at least delay the great purge if it is already engaged in a war with a great power by a certain date. Stalin may have been a paranoid bastard, but I don't think he would have killed off most of the military top brass during an active war, at least not until the outcome was certain. Then he'd probably start worrying about the successful generals becoming a bit too popular.
