@AR0dful
@AR0dful 7 ай бұрын
I think it’s pretty hard to say Lindor is underperforming to his contract, since (while massive) it is inflated by his position. When comparing Lindor to the other players in his 300m pay range that you listed (Judge, Harper, Betts, Machado), he does get dwarfed by most of them purely offensively, but he also provides the most value at the toughest defensive position in baseball. There’s no other SS on that list, and the other SS’s who got paid somewhat recently (Bogaerts, Correa, Seager) get paid in the same range. Personally, if I had to choose from those 4 SS’s to get my every day guy, I’m probably taking Lindor as he’s the most reliable health-wise and gives you elite defense with 30-30 potential every year. SS is a tough market and the price tag will always be steep. Lindor will be a HOF player with 5 more good seasons, and I think that warrants him being paid with the elite SS in the game.

It is when you consider the fact that he will be making 34 million a year for the next decade. If you compare his numbers to Bryce Harper or Aaron Judge. They are not comparable. He is 30 now so they will be paying him 30 million per year up to the age of 40.

@fr2ncm9 welcome to baseball contracts in todays day and age. A top shelf SS is not a cheap position. Correa is getting 33 a year before incentives, and that includes his injury history, cheating scandal involvement, and two teams backing out of a deal with him. Lindor isn't underrated. it's using the wrong term. I do, however, believe he is underappreciated. Guy is in my opinion hands down top 3 in baseball and I think hes 1, but hes constantly being shot down. Arcia made the ASG over him last year, if that doesnt show the disrespect lmao i dont know what does. Then again, its a dumb fan vote and Lindor usually starts off slow so hes just not a good candidate for the arbitrary ASG requirements lmao

Thank God someone finally said it. “Francisco Lindor is the most underrated player in baseball” has been one of the most annoying narratives the last few years. Right up there with “Tim Anderson is actually an amazing person and an amazing teammate who’s just misunderstood because he flips his bat and calls himself Jackie Robinson”. Right up to the point where J-Ram KO-d him and all of a sudden we could all agree that TA is a douchebag diva and “Down goes Anderson!” was therapeutic for all of us.

I think underrated is a massive stretch, but under appreciated is a fair term. People dont act like hes a top SS anymore meanwhile id struggle to think of more than Seager or Turner over him. And personally in that case, im taking between Turner and Lindor, seager can sit in the IL corner lmao SS is a premium position and a guy who plays nearly 160 every year, can go 30-30 with GG defense, it shouldn't take a rocket surgeon to see the value of Lindor.

@@elisalsa24 Lindor is a good shortstop, no one is debating that. But WAR can be misleading - anyone who watches the Mets knows that Pete Alonso, for example, is more valuable to the Mets lineup - when he's on, the Mets are winning. Yet because of positional adjustment he will never have more than 4 or 5 WAR, and Lindor can be an average hitter and end up with the same amount.

Cohen spent crazy money on him. That’s all. That’s your entire argument. We’re talking about Cohen. That’s it. “Overrated” is about people’s current impression of someone’s abilities in comparison to others. It has NOTHING to do with past expectations. Maybe some people thought he would be a future Hall of Famer, but that has no bearing on whether he’s overrated now. You referred to people’s current opinion of him only ONCE, at the end, with nothing to support it: “He seems to be hyped up by a lot of people.” So, to sum up, a lot of people had super high expectations for him, Cohen gave him crazy money, at times he was one of the best shortstops in the game, he’s had a consistently excellent career for several years, and, without any evidence, you feel like he’s hyped up by a lot of people, so he’s the most OVERRATED player in baseball. I don’t believe you.

Lindor will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Unless he gets injured, he will retire with the most HRs hit in MLB history by a SS (if he hits zero for the rest of the season, he'll need to hit fewer than 18/year for the remainder of his contract). He is amazing, and is most certainly "underrated."

@@DCampusano1 first of all, batting average is no argument. Secondly 40 HRs and .900 OPS isnt the mark of "above average", those are elite numbers. There are plenty of "good" hitters that don't have that kind of slugging. Use a player's OPS+. If it's over 100, then statistically, yes, he is "above average". As a die hard Mets fan, I love Lindor but he doesn’t hit like someone who’s making $300+ mil. Been saying that even in his great 2022-23 seasons. One of the best defenders in the sport and a good baserunner, but you gotta do more than a barely .800 OPS when you’re getting paid like he is. Really hoping he turns it around this year
@danieldanielson2324

If anything, he’s just flat out overpaid for his production but that’s fine. Cohen shelled that money over and knew what he’d be getting and it hasn’t reached the point where we are getting zero value out of Lindor. Till I hear a report that Cohen is strapped for cash and the Mets can’t make moves because of him, then it’s not the end of the world. I still believe in Franky.

Nah the juiced ball era just killed everyone’s perspective on what good hitting numbers are. In terms of ops+, 2022 and 2023 were lindors best hitting seasons despite having an actual ops way below his numbers from 2016-19. People just gotta understand that a .750+ ops is pretty good and that what we saw in the back half of the 2010s was not realistic at all

Depends on how you define worth. Is it just and fair that guys who hit a ball make tens of millions of dollars? Eh. Do they deserve the going market rate based on league revenue? Probably, yes. It's incredibly rare for players to have seasons that amazing, but with current market rates guys like Lindor are actually underpaid while make obscene amounts of money.

No point in dog-piling on you, since your viewers have vented their spleens in the below comment section I'll give you credit for your past work. I don't have any measurable complaints about your previous work, and I assess it as fairly good for a young man Thence, I'll limit my commentary to a subject in which my expertise almost certainly exceeds 100.000% of all those who have seen this video One area of my expertise is formal logic, as my profession is mathematics The statement that you made, approximately, that "Either Lindor is a top-two shortstop or is underrated, he can't be both" is absolutely incorrect First of all, I'll assert that he's arguably the top current SS, based on the whole picture - power, defense, baserunning, speed, durability, and so forth Next, "being underrated" is inferred to mean "underrated in general" If I am certain he is great, that doesn't mean that, in general, he's not underrated because *_I_* don't underrate him Anyway, you should follow up this video with one where you admit that you made something that sucked because you were under pressure, etc. Otherwise, keep up the good work. But do yourself a favor and stay away from if-then type statements which you state as absolutes

You can't say that because he signed a big contract he should get better. You are paying for what a player is, not for what you want a player to be. And if you are talking comps like Trout and Ohtani then you aren't correct either. Trout since signing has been constantly injured and isn't performing better then his earlier years. @@kevincanning3051 a player's contract does not matter when it comes to talking about how good they are. If Lindor got paid 2 bucks for the whole season and is the exact same type of player he is now, sure you'd take him over guys like Mookie, Judge, and Seager cause he is dirt cheap for the production he brings, but it doesn't make him any better. Talking about if a player is overrated or underrated or how good they actually are shouldn't start with their contract cause it has no effect on how good they actually are, it's the opposite, how good they actually are usually leads to what kind of contract they get

Thank you - a lot of people insist on saying Lindor is "one of the best shortstops" and point to whichever advanced statistic suits their argument, but as a Mets fan, we all see him go through some pretty bad slumps when the team needs him the most. Even last year, he finished strong but was hitting around .220 through June when they called it a season and started to rebuild. His Cleveland numbers were better than as a Met, but his power was inflated by the juiced ball, and the AL Central in the late 2010s was weak as hell. I still remember him not running out a ground ball during the first month of his new contract and getting booed, thinking "We should have made him prove he's worth the money for a year instead of just handing it out before he's shown anything as a Met." I wish the best for Lindor but he's inconsistent as hell and hasn't proved he's worth the money, or being seen as the "face of the franchise." He reminds me of Carlos Beltran in a lot of ways, although Beltran missed more time and was a bit better when he played.

@@iTalkStudiosYeah in hindsight, the “Harper is the most overrated player in baseball” discourse from around 2018-2020 is insane and hilarious. You could argue that he maybe was overrated a tiny bit in his final few years as a Nat, but as a Phillie? Absolutely not. He’s been consistently better in Philly than he was in DC. Since 2019, his OPS is .929 (7th in the league in that time period and ahead of guys like Betts, Acuna, and Tatis), he won an MVP, nearly single-handedly dragged the Phillies to a World Series appearance, and has had a playoff OPS over 1.100 the last 2 years. If anything, he’s massively underpaid for the value he provides on the field and off the field.
@sw120
@sw120 5 ай бұрын
Always hated that discussion. As a Mets fan who has no reason to root for him, I got around early and realized how good he actually is. His contract isn't even bad in terms of AAV, it just happens to be over the magic number of 300M cause it's a super long deal. If he wasn't hyped up as baseball's version of Lebron then he wouldn't have been called overrated, and doesn't help that his rookie year was the same as Mike Trout's, whose career trajectory actually did mirror Lebron's (and kinda still does, his numbers now are still awesome even if he's gotten hurt a ton) I will say I can't really stand the glazing he gets now, cause it's from that 2022 postseason he had (which was amazing) that got him the respect he deserves when he should've had it a long time ago. And cause I kinda think postseason stats are wildly overrated since it's a super small sample when every baseball fan is watching instead of just their own teams' games But in conclusion Bryce has always been awesome, shame he went a decade without getting his respect

I'm a die hard Indians/Guardians fan... Back when the rumors of trading Lindor were swirling I was totally okay with sending him out of town knowing the big contract he'd be demanding (and as long as we got some controllable players in return). I knew he wouldn't blossom into a player he'd never been up until that point and any big contract would doom making any other signings/extensions.

He's on pace to probably surpass Barry Larkin and Ozzie Smith in WAR and possibly get to 3,000 hits. Barring injury, he's most likely a Hall of famer. AS a Mets fan I mostly agree with everything you said. It’s just hard to digest. I honestly think no player is worth over 30 million per year. Arguably the best hockey player on the planet, Connor McDavid doesn’t even make $15 million per year. NHL salary cap restrains over spending. Kind of sad when you see a player like Lindor, not the best player in the world making more than double.

The biggest problem is that everyone is acting like it's ~2010 and that the expected value per WAR is still around $6 million. Everyone saying that Lindor isn't playing like a guy worth $30 million a year is actually correct, in that his value has actually been closer to $45-50 million a year so far with the Mets. $30-35 million is no longer an insane amount of money for a baseball player; you don't need to be a generational talent on the level of Trout to make that kind of money (and to be fair to Lindor, he's put up nearly 50 WAR in his career, so realistically he's on track for a HoF career). If we're being totally fair to Lindor and comparing him to other $300+ million players, your list was: Otani: not really fair, but he hasn't had a season as a position player to match Lindor's best. Lindor has him beat in career WAR by over 20 wins, assuming you don't look at Otani's pitching
