@AR0dful7 ай бұрын
I think it’s pretty hard to say Lindor is underperforming to his contract, since (while massive) it is inflated by his position. When comparing Lindor to the other players in his 300m pay range that you listed (Judge, Harper, Betts, Machado), he does get dwarfed by most of them purely offensively, but he also provides the most value at the toughest defensive position in baseball. There’s no other SS on that list, and the other SS’s who got paid somewhat recently (Bogaerts, Correa, Seager) get paid in the same range. Personally, if I had to choose from those 4 SS’s to get my every day guy, I’m probably taking Lindor as he’s the most reliable health-wise and gives you elite defense with 30-30 potential every year. SS is a tough market and the price tag will always be steep. Lindor will be a HOF player with 5 more good seasons, and I think that warrants him being paid with the elite SS in the game.

@fr2ncm9 welcome to baseball contracts in todays day and age. A top shelf SS is not a cheap position. Correa is getting 33 a year before incentives, and that includes his injury history, cheating scandal involvement, and two teams backing out of a deal with him. Lindor isn't underrated. it's using the wrong term. I do, however, believe he is underappreciated. Guy is in my opinion hands down top 3 in baseball and I think hes 1, but hes constantly being shot down. Arcia made the ASG over him last year, if that doesnt show the disrespect lmao i dont know what does. Cohen spent crazy money on him. That’s all. That’s your entire argument. We’re talking about Cohen. That’s it. “Overrated” is about people’s current impression of someone’s abilities in comparison to others. It has NOTHING to do with past expectations. Maybe some people thought he would be a future Hall of Famer, but that has no bearing on whether he’s overrated now. You referred to people’s current opinion of him only ONCE, at the end, with nothing to support it: “He seems to be hyped up by a lot of people.” So, to sum up, a lot of people had super high expectations for him, Cohen gave him crazy money, at times he was one of the best shortstops in the game, he’s had a consistently excellent career for several years, and, without any evidence, you feel like he’s hyped up by a lot of people, so he’s the most OVERRATED player in baseball. I don’t believe you.

Lindor will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Unless he gets injured, he will retire with the most HRs hit in MLB history by a SS (if he hits zero for the rest of the season, he'll need to hit fewer than 18/year for the remainder of his contract). He is amazing, and is most certainly "underrated."

Even last year, he finished strong but was hitting around .220 through June when they called it a season and started to rebuild. His Cleveland numbers were better than as a Met, but his power was inflated by the juiced ball, and the AL Central in the late 2010s was weak as hell. I still remember him not running out a ground ball during the first month of his new contract and getting booed, thinking "We should have made him prove he's worth the money for a year instead of just handing it out before he's shown anything as a Met." Lindor has never stood out to me. I always thought he was a good player, but never thought he was great. Sure he’s won a pair of Gold Gloves, some Silver Sluggers and was a 30-30 member last year. But you put that stuff to the side and look more closely at his numbers, they just don’t jump off the page enough.

Remember when everyone said Bryce Harper was the most overrated player in baseball for like 3 years? Lol

That was always such a dumb thing to say haha. He's lived up to the unfair hype brought on him when he was 16 and more. He's that good.
@philly_sports15587 ай бұрын
@@iTalkStudiosYeah in hindsight, the “Harper is the most overrated player in baseball” discourse from around 2018-2020 is insane and hilarious. You could argue that he maybe was overrated a tiny bit in his final few years as a Nat, but as a Phillie? Absolutely not. He’s been consistently better in Philly than he was in DC. Since 2019, his OPS is .929 (7th in the league in that time period and ahead of guys like Betts, Acuna, and Tatis), he won an MVP, nearly single-handedly dragged the Phillies to a World Series appearance, and has had a playoff OPS over 1.100 the last 2 years. If anything, he’s massively underpaid for the value he provides on the field and off the field.
@sw1205 ай бұрын
Always hated that discussion. As a Mets fan who has no reason to root for him, I got around early and realized how good he actually is. His contract isn't even bad in terms of AAV, it just happens to be over the magic number of 300M cause it's a super long deal. If he wasn't hyped up as baseball's version of Lebron then he wouldn't have been called overrated, and doesn't help that his rookie year was the same as Mike Trout's, whose career trajectory actually did mirror Lebron's (and kinda still does, his numbers now are still awesome even if he's gotten hurt a ton) I will say I can't really stand the glazing he gets now, cause it's from that 2022 postseason he had (which was amazing) that got him the respect he deserves when he should've had it a long time ago. And cause I kinda think postseason stats are wildly overrated since it's a super small sample when every baseball fan is watching instead of just their own teams' games But in conclusion Bryce has always been awesome, shame he went a decade without getting his respect

I'm a die hard Indians/Guardians fan... Back when the rumors of trading Lindor were swirling I was totally okay with sending him out of town knowing the big contract he'd be demanding (and as long as we got some controllable players in return). I knew he wouldn't blossom into a player he'd never been up until that point and any big contract would doom making any other signings/extensions.
@youngfelipe90686 ай бұрын
Lindor’s seasons in Cleveland were never going to be his norm. That doesn’t make him overrated though, he’s probably putting together one of the better careers for a shortstop in the MLB right now.

That's funny because as of 10/15/24: he finished the 2024 season with a 7 WAR, 33 HR, 107 Runs scored, .844 OPS, 29SB and 91 RBIs. His 10th season. He's on pace to probably surpass Barry Larkin and Ozzie Smith in WAR and possibly get to 3,000 hits. Barring injury, he's most likely a Hall of famer. These videos should be made at the end of each season not in the beginning or middle or during a players bad stretch.

AS a Mets fan I mostly agree with everything you said. It’s just hard to digest. I honestly think no player is worth over 30 million per year. Arguably the best hockey player on the planet, Connor McDavid doesn’t even make $15 million per year. NHL salary cap restrains over spending. Kind of sad when you see a player like Lindor, not the best player in the world making more than double.

The biggest problem is that everyone is acting like it's ~2010 and that the expected value per WAR is still around $6 million. Everyone saying that Lindor isn't playing like a guy worth $30 million a year is actually correct, in that his value has actually been closer to $45-50 million a year so far with the Mets. $30-35 million is no longer an insane amount of money for a baseball player; you don't need to be a generational talent on the level of Trout to make that kind of money (and to be fair to Lindor, he's put up nearly 50 WAR in his career, so realistically he's on track for a HoF career). If we're being totally fair to Lindor and comparing him to other $300+ million players, your list was: Otani: not really fair, but he hasn't had a season as a position player to match Lindor's best. Lindor has him beat in career WAR by over 20 wins, assuming you don't look at Otani's pitching
