As a heat fan I will never forget him hitting 10 shots in a row in the 2006 ECF against Detroit to send us to the finals. An unbelievable performance. I do think he could have hit his potential if he had been with a team like Miami from the start. The structure of the organization would’ve matured his game much faster and made him more about substance then flash. The j-will Miami got was indeed the best version, but he was already declining physically.

He reached his max potential. The reason he could never be a true star was because he had a terrible basketball IQ. Which back then was a kiss of death for point guards. Skilled? Absolutely. Honestly the league needs more players like J Will. When you view the NBA as an entertainment business, which it is, these are the kinds of guys that people like to watch. Flashy, innovative, and has an edge that many other players don't have. As well as the fact that he is 6' or so is much more appealing to the general public. Watching 7' guys do boring dunks, and average guards chucking up 10-15 3 pointers per game isn't very entertaining anymore. While I respect guys like Tim Duncan and Giannis, I don't think they are as entertaining to watch as guys like J Will. I don't think he was overrated.
@88949597 Жыл бұрын
Anyone who witnessed him at the time knows he wasn't a top 10 point guard in the league. He wasn't ever considered great by any stretch, he had great court vision, but extremely Immature at times, and very questionable decision making... he was perfect for the Kings, and perfect for the time... Right after Jordan retired, amid the new young highlight players of the early 00's (Vince, Kobe, T-Mac, Iverson, etc.) Not sure I'd really call him a legend? But he was most certainly a fan favorite, and really fun to watch! Him and Webber were iconic, and even though he toned down the flashiness, he and a young (and agile) Pau Gasol were just as fun a duo at times! I think his influence is more imprinted in the basketball/streetball culture, more than any lasting legacy in the league. But J-Dub was my favorite player as a kid, and still a favorite of mine 20+ years later!

He was always considered like a mid tier PG, good at handling the ball and adequate scoring, and I think some people might have been over enamored with his really flashy handling skills and passes and stuff, but he was never considered in the same league as someone like a Jason Kidd for example. I think at his peak, Jason Williams could be seen as something of a poor man's Jason Kidd, but Kidd was better for a lot longer, he didn't take the risks that Williams did that you mention either. Also, Mike Bibby was a lot better than him as well, Bibby could shoot the lights out, wasn't much of a passer but overall a way more effective basketball player and a huge part of the Kings' success. When Bibby and Peja got hot from beyond the arc, they could just absolutely destroy your team in short order. Those Kings are the ones I remember a lot more than the Jason Williams era Kings.
@williamdavis9562 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Jason Williams was A LOT more talented than Bibby. But Bibby had something Jason never had. A high IQ. Which made him the better point guard. I was a huge Jason Williams fan and would go out of my way to watch his games. Yet if I owned a franchise I'd take Bibby over Jason at the drop of a hat.
@terrytenley9404 Жыл бұрын
In someways I agree.. But folks from all over just loved the kings in Jason’s era there.. The Princeton offence and their ability to pass the ball Made this team a team to watch.. Jason’s passes were put on highlight reels.. You listen to teammates tell stories of him is great.. Shaq, Christie, divac, and especially Webber always said his passes were off the scale..The players who played with him said it was beyond fun and helped team bonds.. Getting the kings to play high level basketball was no small feat, especially when Webber didn’t want to be there until he realized how much Divacs & Williams would help him. In Williams 3 years as a King they ranked #1 in ppg all 3 years & got better on D every year, ranking 13th in his final year as a King. After being traded for Bibby, they never ranked higher than 17th in D & also never ranked #1 in O ever again. His willingness to share the ball kept teammates alert & encouraged them to create TOs. If the kings would’ve traded Adelman instead of Williams, the kings would have a ring too.

Yeah definitely wasn't Kwame Brown, Jimmer Fredette, Adam Morrison, Hasheem Thabeet, Darko, Greg Oden, ect. It was totally the starting point guard who helped teams to the playoffs and won a ring as a starting point guard.

Overrated by people who didn't see him play.. if you watched him play you know he was a semi serviceable role player in his early days with turnover problems.. he was heat and electricity off of the bench.. later in his career he became a serviceable role player who could ignite an offense in spurts.. he was ok.. not good, not bad.. he was serviceable

Yeah I’d agree most people who did much more than watch highlights can find he wasn’t all that effective

only someone who knows nothing about basketball would call jason williams overrated.

White chocolate was pretty solid. He wasn’t a hall of famer but he wasn’t a scrub either.

I wonder if the Kings would get the “small market” treatment in the playoffs if Williams was around. The flashy fan favorite might have prevented it even though Bibby was a better fit.

Overrated? No, not really. I don't think anybody was saying he was Kobe. One of my favorite players as a kid? ABSOLUTELY!!!
@jeremiahjohnson1513 Жыл бұрын
He might have been comparable as a passer to Maravich, but he wasn't half the offensive talent Pete was. He did have talent but being a bit of a knucklehead he never achieved his full potential.

Williams isn’t really overrated I do t hear anyone ever talking about him as a great, just as a guy who made a lot of highlight plays. I’d argue that the title of this video should go to Allen Iverson but that’s just me

I don't know if he is underrated or overrated, but I enjoyed watching him at his best.

he is overrated now because his highlights make it seem he was better than he really is. but still super fun to watch, his mixtapes are some of the best

You forgot to mention how he joined Ice Cubes B I G 3 league & got injured his first game

I always thought J-Will was so overrated, even while he was playing. Most fans see flash and mistake it for greatness
@swishcountyproductions Жыл бұрын
I think it’s all guys that fall into that category, same with Jamal Crawford

That’s only because people don’t watch games now. It’s only highlights.

All I know is he will go down as having one of the deepest bags in NBA history. That’s his legacy

If something Williams was an underrated PG by basketball bureaucrats that hated everything unusual like most of the people does. He was also a solid PG under Hubie brown with one of the best assists per turnover ratios in a time were defence and low scoring was THE WAY. He won a championship been the starting Pg with a very relevant role on the finals. By today pathetic NBA quality basketball standards he will be a star lol.

I wouldn’t say overrated I would say he fits more into the what if. Can anybody who watched him play say he got the most out of his talent? I don’t think so I think he could of mixed more of his flash with production.

the most entertaining player to watch, and settled to be servicable towards the later half of his career. Popular, but not overrated at all.

Williams wasn’t the reason the heat won the finals that year, the refs gifted the heat that finals.

Don't think he was overrated. He was rated just right. Otherwise, he'd make multiple all star appearances.

Absolutely overrated, I watched a ton NBA games in that Era and he was good but definitely far more overrated by this generation than anyone I've seen. He was flashy but not really efficient. Nobody compared him to Pete Maravich 😕

Very overrated indeed, just because you’re flashy doesn’t mean you’re really shit.

Freeze frame 4:10 on this clip. While your speaking of lack of productivity. Watch the offense stop and watch JWill dribble one on one. Nobody cuts to the hole or runs in for the obvious "ally oop". Old enough to remember the problem back then. Williams was ahead of his time actually. Other traditional players didn't know how to capitalize, on his street ball flare. Untill he got to Miami.

I mean that’s the rising stars game, the kings obviously had better off ball movement
