This is the power of saying YES AND. Most people say YES BUT in a conversation which doesn't build on their response, it actually negates it.
If you want to keep a conversation going in a positive direction, use YES AND more!

fun fact; ‘yes and’ is also an improvisation rule/technique used to make sure actors agree and accept information. This is used because if someone, for example, in an improv scene, said “omg look there’s a fire over there!” and their scene partner says “no there isn’t” then it shuts the scene down. So, in that example, you could say “Yes, and the fire is blue” or something like that lol

Yeah I don't get why he's acting like this is some "revelation for conversations". It's just to not stop the flow of an improv act.
@beckarose7424
@beckarose7424 Жыл бұрын
@Khayul That's like saying you don't get how a single thing can have multiple uses. Because it's both.. did you not watch the video? It can make a major difference in the way you come off to people in regular life if it's not already something you say. Just because it's also used for improv doesn't mean his point is invalid.
@Khayul
@Khayul Жыл бұрын
@@beckarose7424 I understand that things can have multiple uses. The phrasing and overselling is what I find jarring. That's like listing all the ways you can use a butter knife. Yes, you CAN use it as leverage, you CAN extend your reach, but at the end of the day, it's a knife for spreading butter. Not to mention that this isn't some super secret manipulation technique. This is just adding a word to a conversation, which doesn't always make sense in context. I know people who constantly do this to "not create tension", but then they contradict the person they responded to. TL;DR: It's something to think about, not make a rule or fuss about.

@Khayul
@Khayul Жыл бұрын
@@nicolasniikhav0d-562 One's profession has nothing to do with this. I don't hate that he's telling people that this exists, I hate that he's selling this as a "make yourself better in conversations" strategy, and not even citing what it's originally used for. I bet most of the people praising this haven't used it, or if they have, it hasn't made a lick of difference. "Use these words" is a common trick to make people think that they're getting good advice, because it's straight to the point, and very understandable. Fact through is that human communication isn't only words. It's body language, subtle facial tweaks and inflections. "Say X to be more charismatic" is such a tired old hoax line. Rather typical of "pep talk scammers". It's setting up people for failure. And I honestly don't understand why people just accept things they hear once as the truth or as factual.

'Yes and' is a common dialectical therapy technique. It acknowledges that two opposing ideas or feelings can exist at once. Instead of thinking "i hate this but i need to be here" think "i hate this and i need to be here." It acknowledges the feeling of wanting to leave and choice to stay as both valid even though they are opposed.

"Yes and" is a widely recognized and utilized technique in dialectical therapy. It serves as a powerful tool to acknowledge and navigate the coexistence of two seemingly opposing ideas or emotions. Rather than adopting a mindset of "I hate this but I need to be here," the "yes and" approach encourages individuals to embrace the notion of "I hate this and I need to be here." This technique aims to validate the presence of conflicting thoughts or feelings within oneself. It recognizes the genuine desire to escape a situation while simultaneously recognizing the deliberate decision to remain in it. By accepting the validity of both perspectives, individuals can explore their complex emotions more openly and find greater self-understanding. Through the application of "yes and," individuals can develop a more comprehensive understanding of their inner conflicts. It allows for a more nuanced exploration of the reasons behind their desire to leave, while also acknowledging the factors that motivate them to stay. By recognizing and honoring these opposing forces, individuals can gain a deeper insight into their own values, priorities, and personal growth. Furthermore, the "yes and" technique empowers individuals to embrace paradoxical thinking. It encourages them to view conflicting ideas not as mutually exclusive, but as coexisting elements that contribute to their overall experience. This perspective promotes self-acceptance and reduces the internal tension that arises from the struggle between opposing thoughts and emotions. In summary, "yes and" serves as a valuable dialectical therapy technique that embraces the simultaneous existence of opposing ideas or emotions. By adopting this approach, individuals can validate their complex feelings and thoughts, facilitating a deeper understanding of themselves and promoting personal growth and acceptance.

That makes literally no sense. First of all, that's NOT what they do in improve. Secondly, what they actually do is for an entirely different reason. It's basically you can't say no. You have to go along with whatever scenario the previous person set up. This guy is simply talking about putting a positive spin on how you phrase things. They're not even remotely related in any way.
@CalmClamFam
@CalmClamFam Жыл бұрын
@@markwildt5728But it still makes it positive and it’s still expanding off of what the other person is saying. Just because it’s a rule to not say “no” in improv doesn’t mean it doesn’t add that same reaffirming vibe as it would in a normal conversation. Improv may be chaotic because of this method, but if done right, improv can sound like a real conversation. That positive spin is still felt in improv and in a real scenario
@Khayul
@Khayul Жыл бұрын
@@CalmClamFam Which makes no sense when you're not agreeing. If people "Yes and you're wrong" me, then I know they're slow in the head, and can't disagree properly. You absolutely CAN say no in improv. the technique is not actually saying it, but accepting what is happening to not stop the act. Your improv character can definitely disagree. This is just some "bro-science" bullshittery.
