Great vid - and great playing; as usual. EQ is so underrated. Besides being a performing musician for 50 yrs, I've also been doing PT audio engineering; for 30 yrs. So my approach my pedalboard is influenced by practical audio chain theory. My 1st pedal, post tuner, is always a 10 band graphic EQ. For those who want a Graphic EQ pedal, I think 7-band is the minimum; 5-bands are fairly worthless. For my rig, I do my best to just cut the annoying freqs and then use the master vol to bump the overall gain. I will boost some freqs, but at a minimum. Every freq, thats boosted, is an additional amplifier; which can bring added noise/distortion. With guitar, not necess bad; but can compound with additional gain stages. That said, some great tones can be created; as you demonstrated. Freq cuts are passive, and does not change then inherent signal. Ya prob know most/all of this; some may not.

Sir! That clean baritone sound was ambrosial . I swear even if you made a demo video for a Tonka Truck you’d convince nerds like me it’s that secret sauce I need in my rig. Your channel always inspires me to try new sounds, and more importantly, keep practicing! Much respect, Mr. Thorne.

I used to use an eq to actually remove high gain from my amps for cleaner parts. Now I use a Timmy for that. I get a high gain tone rolling and hit the Timmy that is set up to bring the gain down. It's weird but it works for me in front of a PV5150 perfectly. I have to get another eq. Thanks Pete.

Man, your intros just blow me away. It's incredible stuff dude. What would be cool, would be if you did a post how you did this from scratch. How you get the ideas for the tunes, how/why you decide to use which guitar per guitar part and finally how the recording is done, including the mixing and mastering hints and tips. Big ask I know, but I couldn't think of a better tutor for this. :)

I also renewed my interest in EQ recently and my Boss GE-7 basically runs my whole setup. My preamp setting are all flat, all on noon (except for the gain), I use some relatively Ownhammer V30 IRs. I was blown away what I could do only with my EQ pedal and my guitars. I have two main guitars with completely different characters and both very versatile. I set my standard sound on the EQ (more or less flat with a slight boost in the highs) but the level fader is the star. When I boost it full I get a really great lead sound, just a little boost is a nice full crunch for chords and at 0 it's an almost clean sound that goes so well with modulation and a bit of delay.

Great demo! I’ve been using many types of eq for over 30 years in front of my amps to boost the front end or post distortion. With the Boss eq 200 I wouldn’t have to use several eq’s for different patches and just use the Boss eq 200.It won’t replace my Furman PQ3, but I’ll be able to get rid 3 other eq in my system because it can store different eq curves!

Great sounds as always Pete, thanks for doing these. A lot of folks probably don't realize that us old fucks (40 and older?) didn't have anything like KZbin when we were coming up where you could hear not only the opinions of great players and guys who knew what they were talking about but also hear the sounds for ourselves. To be able to access high quality sound samples of a pedal you're thinking of buying is a massive change for the better in the industry. Back in the day you might get 15-20 mins with a pedal in a store, with probably not your own signal path to hear it in, and often a salesman breathing down your neck to buy it. So very nice to be able to hear the products that interest you beforehand in a low pressure situation, and buy and support the products you really like. Killer sounding and very versatile pedal.

Im looking for a new EQ myself. The problem I've had with the ones I've used in the past is that even with the EQ set at its neutral position they still colour the sound when engaged. I'm looking for one that when the bands are set at neutral it still sounds like its bypassed until you start to make adjustments to the bands. Could you be kind enough to give me your opinion regarding this on this particular EQ?

This looks like one of Roland's rackmount digital graphic EQs squeezed into a pedal, like the SRQ-2031 (stereo, 31 band) or SRQ-4015 (4 channels, 15 bands; I use one of these in my soundman gig rack because you can use the 4 EQs completely separately, kind of like what you describe here re: pre/post). But having the band centers adjustable is a cool innovation. -Tom

I'm starting to doubt whether the Boss EQ 200 has the headroom to be used post-distortion, i.e. in the FX loop of the amp, as this is where the level of the signal is a lot higher than it is between guitar pedals, and horrible clipping can take place if the pedal is not up to the job. The MXR 10 band EQ allows a maximum input and output level of +16dBu (+14dBv) before clipping, the Source Audio Programmable EQ allows +9dBu (2.2V RMS), the Strymon Timeline and Blue Sky delay and reverb units (used in FX loop) allow +8dBu. ...The Boss allows +7dBu. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has thoughts on this pedal's ability to handle the high signal levels sent to the power amp stage.

Nice demo (and reminder) Pete, cheers. A hugely important secret tool to sculpting and fine-tuning a hell of a lot of the sounds we hear - either live or in the studio. If you think about what it does you'll see/hear the infinite shaping possibilities (when compared to the usual 1-3 knob boost/cut 'equivalents'). Important reminder: you can't do this specific manipulation type on a recorded track in your DAW (unless you're re-amping).

At first I was turned off by the fact that it's digital, but this thing seems super usable. My Deluxe Memory Man with tap tempo has an effects loop for the wet signal, and I have wanted to get an eq or hpf in there for some time to clean up the rumble a bit on longer delay times. This might be too good to pass up with my Mastermind PBC board.
