It's to do with the way they carbon date the poor sharks eye tissue, it's very approximate (+/-200 years approximate.) How do they get eye tissue samples, from a living shark without removing eye tissue using some kind of sharp tool? Yeah, friendly. Amazingly old though.

Correction Greenland sharks are not docile as first thought, they are responsible for the attacks of seals and leaving cork screw like wounds which wash up on Sable Island. In addition it is one of the rare sharks that can survive in fresh water.

Me too!!! In vacation but i was so scared to get accedentally swallowed because im only 13 years old so i asked my sister to go with my i grabbed the basking sharks tail and it swam a bit fast not faster fast so i went into our boat immedietly cause i was exited and scared first time vacation with a shark

basking sharks are not rare I've literally seen dozens of them in the Irish sea

The reason is because some parasitic fish will nibble on the back and the basking sharks HATE this, so the jump out and land on the back in an effort to get it off... Now THATS a knowledge nugget.

I saw black tips in the beginning!! The only shark I saw besides hammerhead when I lived in Kwajalein :D

I stay in a Town in (ardrossan,Scotland)and were a bit famous here for having basking sharks as they are seen very often at the harbour or on the boat called the Arran ferry witch goes to isle of Arran and you can see dolphins,big jelly fish and basking sharks but its more common to see all 3 in the summer
