@@DynaDere Part of it is that, but that's not all imho (most other cultures are rarely represented by them). Three majors factors imho: - The West gave a huge impression on the Japanese in the second half of the 19th century. In the early 20th century, Europeans books were very common and this foreign culture entered Japan like no other did. There was a lot of interest in western history, which in turn gave rise to an interest in western fantasy later. Even comparatively to their own population, LoTR was a bigger hit in Japan than even in Germany or France. I'm insure for UK. - East Asians respect "majors" civilisations a lot, that's also why regarding the middle-east, Mesopotamia (especially Babylon) and Egypt are very popular over there, Persia too for example. I'd even argue that Mesopotamia (the birthplace of civilisation) is more popular in Japan than in the West: I've heard about the Epic of Gilgamesh from Japanese games first. - Regarding fantasy, it's easier to do western fantasy for them because more books, movies, etc... about western fantasy exist to be inspired from, and it's more popular even in Japan. When they want to make something more Japanese, they usually prefer historical mangas (for example the Sengoku Period, HUGELY popular in Japan) rather than purely fictional asian fantasy (though it exists, the Twelve Kingdoms and Mobirito are masterpieces for example).

Lanz Varon it's an entertaining romantic story about a virgin witch who tries to stop the 100 years war by scaring the everloving shit out of everyone using her powers, and a young mercenary soldier whom she saved in said conflict. What makes it interesting is that this witch's actions annoy everyone around her. from the devil to the human townsfolk, the inquisition, the fighting armies, the kings, her fellow witches and even god himself who sends archangel Gabriel give her an ultimatum.
@Sextus708 жыл бұрын
I recently finished watching it and I think it is sort of a mixed bag. For one side, I really enjoyed how well the medieval setting was made (especially the battles and duels, just as Skallagrim points out), the main characters were well characterized and charismatic and the plot tackles some interesting ethical and philosophical topics which give it depth. However, I had a hard time dealing with the, IMO, excessive sex jokes. They turn annoying, lame and even disgusting pretty fast (for example, Priapus search for a dick LOL), I find them to be very awkward and out of tone with the other overall meaningful and compelling themes of the story. Also, the ending could've been a lot better. For those reasons I ended giving it a 7/10 . It is a worthy and fun watch if you can endure its flaws, but unfortunately, they prevent it to be a masterpiece, which is a pity because it had so much potential to be one.

I've felt like Magic in a realistic setting makes it feel actually magical. If everyone can do it it isn't special but if you have to normal people fighting and one loses his blade and calls it back to his hand it ups the wow factor. Look at Star Wars, the reason that worked is the universe is governed by the (sometimes their own version) laws of physics. Everyone is bound to these rules and laws EXCEPT the Jedi. This is why you get that feeling when Luke bends the laws of physics and pulls a weapon from someone or to himself.

Thanks to Skallagrim mentioning this on another video I watched this anime and was blown away by the level of detail and accuracy. The knights have better quality gambesons made up of more pieces with lots of gussets around the shoulder/armpit region. The mercenaries have reasonable gambesons made from simpler patterns while the archers have the simplest gambesons. It must be one of the only mediæval shows where historically accurate underwear is shown, almost nobody shows braies and hose worn correctly but here we have a friggen cartoon putting everything else to shame. They obviously had an excellent research team/advisors and listened to them. The other thing was that religion was handled very well. It wasn't anti-anything, it showed the mass of the population as Christian and a fair chunk of the plot revolved around Maria having to deal with those beliefs. The people acted as you would expect of people of that time rather than trying to foist modern morality onto an historical setting.

@duki58089 жыл бұрын
Valo56 Anime is far cheaper than just about any western production, and that's been the case since Tezuka and Astro Boy. I wouldn't even call the 'program' expensive since Japanese animators still work with pen and paper and just transfer their work over for digital colouring/compositing. It's really more a matter of production scheduling and the skill/time/effort of the animators since they're hardly paid well for their work unless they're big name freelancers or something.

I feel like you would enjoy A Practical Guide to Evil. It's a realistic fantasy series which spends a lot of time focusing on the weapons and tactics employed, and which has an unusual magic system largely based on the idea that you can gain power and influence by taking on an archetypal role in the story, and it really goes into the weirdness of how realism interacts with dramatic storytelling. For example, one of the best tacticians of the Dread Empire famously commanded his Legions of Terror never to engage an enemy force that clearly had no chance of survival, because they would always pull off an impossible victory against the odds.

Pasha Staravoitau people have believed in magic throughout human history. Look at the old pantheons and their magic.
@HUNDmiau8 жыл бұрын
Just because the church denied their existence doesn't mean folks didn't believe in them. People saw witches, especially in lands that were pagan not long ago (former germanic or norse territory, slavic territory), as good people, since they knew how to heal folks from sickness with herbs and such
@mindlord00138 жыл бұрын
That's actually quite a major part of the plot. There's a big juxtaposition between the "real" world and fantasy in the series. There are characters that believe that magic is evil (the church) or shouldn't exist in the world because it interferes with the natural order (the Chrisitian God and his order in Heaven), characters that believe magic is to be used for personal gain (other witches), and some characters that believe that those with the power to do good, however unnatural, should strive to make the world a better place.
@LecherousLizard6 жыл бұрын
Pasha Staravoitau That's what the Church wanted people to believe.

Actually, in fantasy stories, where magic is common, all the social structures, architecture and weapons, change to reflect that. This anime depicts a "realistic" world in which a wizard shouldn't exist, but exists anyway. So you have a realistic setting conflicting with a fantastical element, which would be as if a witch appeared nowadays

Anime never cease to surprise me. All though a bit too weird and over the top a lot of the times, there also shows which really impresses me, like this one, at least it seems so, haven't watched it, yet. Will be the first one set in medieval times, and maybe the first one without any horror aspect to it, unless it's bloodier than it looks like. Yeah I don't really watch much anime, and those I have seen are mostly horror.

The Horned King I think there are actually at least three genres under the term anime/manga. There seems to be ridiculous stuff targeted at teenage boys, ridiculous stuff targeted at teenage girls, and mostly serious stuff targeted at adults. A lot of the stuff that gets the best reviews for realism in visual science fiction is also anime or manga and a lot gets good reviews for intellectual depth. And then there's the low brow action or romance schlock that tends to color so many perceptions.

***** To my knowledge, anything chainsaw-based would be almost entirely useless in reality due to the fact that chainsaws generally don't cut quickly through anything. A real chainsaw takes a fair bit of time to cut through soft wood, so attempt to use something similar as a sword would essentially be bashing someone with a jagged object. Bones and the like would obviously be an issue, but if you avoided those, I'm not sure how quickly you would be able to get such a thing into and out of flesh.

@Xandros9999 жыл бұрын
Naru to be fair, real chainsaws aren't designed to cut cloth or flesh. Which doesn't make it realistic, mind. A chainsaw sword would have propblems cutting fast enough, not to mention tearing itself apart. However, say it got a pass on tech issues (Clarke's law), chainswords are well designed, being short to make up for their heft; like a cutlass and tend to feature a guard and sometimes a 2hand grip. Unlike rl swords, you should NOT parry with the edge. The sides and bach are reinforced for the same purpose. Not going to handle nimbly, but might feasibly gut an alien monster.

+The Waiting Flame Pretty much. There were I think a couple other characters in the show who were seen cutting through solid plate armor with a sword, but other than stuff like that, the weapons and tactics are fairly historically accurate. Though the idea behind that series was more to make Guts seem like a mythic hero such as Hercules, Achilles, or Beowulf by showing how he was capable of accomplishing things no historic warrior could. So it could also be argued that the series is also a historically accurate representation of an ancient story about a mythic/legendary hero.

The Golden Age Arc of Berserk is pretty solid when it comes to historical accuracy, minus Guts sword (which despite being much smaller than Dragonslayer was still pretty absurd). @oddity1118 жыл бұрын
(sorry for my poor English) Don't know, fights in Berserk never seemed very realistic to me. Even if you ignore his giant sword that he carries at his back- fights still look silly. Everyone is just standing still, waiting for him to cut them in half, throwing knives going through chain-mail or armor (i think there was also a scene, where a little throwing knife killed a big demon Oo) , shields, or in this case a lack thereof, a woman that cant fight because she's on her period (yeah, very strange), giant Morning star breaking into hundred peaces (also in one of the first episodes a giant axe shared similar fate). And anyway, you cant exclude or ignore Guts- he is the one in 80% of fight scenes :-)

When you see people with plate armor getting cut in half, characters cleaving through several armored soldiers with ease and light cavalry charging at heavy cav and actually winning, I wouldn't consider Berserk very accurate.

Just saying, Guts' dragon slayer is a symbolism for his growing burden as stated here. " It is assumed that Guts can wield the bulky Dragonslayer since he is shown using a regular sword as early as age six to train withGambino (having refused to use a short sword). At nine years old, he wields a bastard sword during his first castle siege accompanied by his mercenary group. In later years, Guts graduates to a longsword and kills a general before handing his prize money to Gambino; he then moves on to a greatsword followed by a two-handed greatsword until he is fifteen, when he uses an over-sized two-hander to kill Bazuso. Ever since then, Guts has been using a sword bigger than his previous one. He has fought, carried, and practiced with oversized swords almost all his life, granting him a physique strong enough to wield the Dragonslayer. This can be taken as symbolizing Guts' increasing burden of living. He also has a magnetic clamp in his prosthetic arm to assist him in holding it.

You've summed up perfectly why I love Akira and find it addictive; it's that mixture of gritty realistic detail and hypercharged scifi/fantasy elements. Everything from the clothing to a bureaucrat's clipboard to the bonzai tree in a politician's office to the police riot gear is meticulously detailed and realistic - which makes a perfect foil for the insane psychological horror and scifi weirdness when it happens. A film where everything is hypercharged, surreal and weightless is hard to invest in or believe; a film that's 90% grounded realism and 10% surreal madness makes those surreal elements much more memorable and convincing by using them sparingly. The contrast is what gives it zest. (Breaking Bad uses the same formula.)

Being a lover of low fantasy, I don't think that the introduction of fantastical elements is necessarily a problem in itself, but I think it's important that those fantastical elements are used and reacted to in ways that make sense. If you make a society where people can use magic, then you should get an idea of how magic works in your world and then try to work out how it would actually be used if it was available to people, how would they "develop" the magic, what problems would they use it to solve, what problems would it create, what kind of status would a wielder of such magic acquire, etc? The more consistently and logically you can integrate these fantastical elements into the world, with the minimal amount of plot holes or obviously contrived excuses for why magic may work to do one thing that's convenient to the plot and/or setting but not another thing that it would seem to be able to do that's inconvenient to the plot and/or setting, the better. It's also very important how people react when fantastical elements are presented to them. I don't much mind if the author invokes some mysterious, unexplained and seemingly senseless plot device, if its purpose is to create an interesting scenario, where the characters reaction and relation to these fantastical elements or characters are what creates the story.
@Chev427BB9 жыл бұрын

The magic makes sense from a historical fiction stand point actually. John of Arch is referenced many times in the hundred year war to have powers of a mystical persuasion. Granted most of her magic was said to be clairvoyance based, but she was even tried and burned as a witch at some point apparently. Belief in magic was alive and well during the time, so it's not totally far-fetched to include elements like this in such an anime. Either way it's cool as hell. Thanks for the recommendation Skallagrim!

TFW an anime with one of the most historically accurate portrayals of medieval armaments could be mistaken for a hentai.
@takchujong56175 жыл бұрын
I would recommend a manga called Wolfsmund. It is inspired by the independence of Swiss. The weapons, armor, and fighting style are drawn with great details and historically accurate, I assume. In later part it also includes an amazing seige with all the brilliant tactics for both attack and defense side. The whole manga is dark and brutal, just like medieval war.

I'm not surprised, some manga/anime are conceived with extensive, serious research. Check out historical manga (not fantasy, pure history). Parasyte's author has made some good ones.

***** the bow that was shown at 0:41 is NOT from an anime it is from the game called monster hunter which has some interesting and unique weapons such as the chargeblade,maybe one day you could do a fantasy weapons scrutinized on this game.

***** also in the video you talked about monster hunting needing siege weapons search up the dragonator its basically a gigantic spear built into city walls which stabs a monster when it gets too close to a village or important area,there are also cannons and ballistas in the game.

Probably realistic because for a Japanese company, they most likely researched a lot more than some Western movie company that thought they already knew everything, and just wanted to make a spectacle. Indie project or foreign projects have more leeway and thats a great advantage.

@bloodyfx10656 жыл бұрын
@@jchen8942 anime is like that because they fantasy and over made things a lot. But when they try to make realistic and serious things they surely have made some sick shit.

Jason Armstrong You're talking about the Golden Age arc? Cause afterwards, it goes hyper fantasy. And Guts would make Skall foam at the mouth.

as any anime fan ive gotta say subs haha but the dubs weren't too bad either. I also recommend watching the old version first then the new revamped ones. and after all that shit is done watch the abridged version because it's funny as hell.

Not only is the history portrayed fairly for an anime, and that the fighting is perfectly what you'd wanna do, the anime is actually really good. Good animation, good sound, fun story, and yes, as a history geek, I loved that they treated the history fairly.
