well, the byzantine emperors wore this type of armor because it was a common type in their time, and they were basically the only emperors in Europe in early medieval times( holy roman emperor doesn't count, he came much later and for long periods of time his title was.......well, more of a symbol), so yeah, when you look at scale armor, it does send your thought to an emperor.....
@kyomademon4536 жыл бұрын
Damian Mares highly doubt it was common and the bizantine emperor was as emperor as the holy roman one, considering the title was basileus: king, over imperator
@nikosvasilakis95536 жыл бұрын
one of the titles was also aftokrator (autocrat) which basically translates to emperor and it's etymology indicates absolute power over his realm,whereas the Holy Roman Empire was kind of a confederation since the Kaiser's subjects (dukes etc.) were kinda autonomous but they were a considered one state,that's what probably Damian means by symbol,cheers :)
@damianmares53386 жыл бұрын
"basileus" in Greek or "basileios" ( if I can actually put 2 thoughts together these days and remember how it was spelled) meant, in a weird way, both "king" and "emperor" , but because of the continuous line of emperors from the Roman Empire to the ERE, the title remained technically the same, even if in 5th-6th century the administration started to shift towards Greek, and not Latin, so the title of "Imperator" became "Basileus" , but also being accompanied by "Autokrator", meaning an entity with absolute power, and in modern Greek, from what I remember, being the word for "Emperor" as for the Holy Roman Emperors, they only had real power until 13th century when the war between the ghibellines and guelphi started, the supporters of either the emperor or the pope, and that conflict restrained the emperor power until it was more a diplomatic figure than an administrative and military one the only times when the Holy Roman Emperor was powerfull was when the emperor was the ruler of wither Austria of Bohemia, and that was because of their inherited land combined with the privileges that their title of emperor gave them, otherwise the title was just sustained by the member states of the Empire in order to protect themselves and make the most use of it

I'm in the process of making my own scale mail out of 3d printed scales for costuming purposes. Your video has been super helpful, I had no idea how to stitch the scales I found online together until I saw the picture of type 5 in the video. I'm halfway through it, and honestly, I understand fully why types 1 and 2 were so much more common. This armor is super flexible and highly protective (aside from being made of plastic) I could honestly only see plate as better protection. However, THE STITCHING TIME ALONE! My fingers are sore from weaving the hundreds of scales together in such a tight-knit fashion. Excellent protection capabilities, but assembly has taken me 2 days alone, and that's just for the front and one side panel. As always skal your video has been an excellent resource and starting point for research, keep it up man

Much quicker than plate though. With playe its is all much more finnicky and demanding of high quality across the entire piece, or else it could be compromised With scale, chain and lamellar, yes it takes a while to make all of them but they dont require as much care and precision as plate, and one bad unit doesnt require that you start all over. Plus repairing the armor is far more cost effective and time efficient than plate

To be honest, I wonder if scale is less about protecting from sword thrusts and more about protecting from missiles. We know that the ancients used arrows extensively -- e.g. the Persians would pretty much actually darken the sky with their volleys -- and then there were the javelins, which were still used all the way through the early middle ages. I'm thinking that most of those would hit you downwards, and scale might actually be better at stopping a pilum than mail would. And then there were other missiles. E.g., the ancients used slings extensively. (E.g., lead bullets from slings defeated the Persian cataphracts.) Or lately the lead-weighted darts of the Romans. If scale actually did better at dissipating the shock from those than chain would, that might actually make it good specialized armour. I'm thinking for example the skirmishing cataphract cavalry that was extensively used in the ancient times, and in Persia they kept the scythed chariots until at least Alexander's time. Those weren't supposed to stay and get into melee. They would harrass the enemy with missiles, and save the all out shock charge for when the enemy was already wavering or showing a vulnerability, like exposed flanks. In both cases the most immediate threat to the rider would be from enemy missile troops. So I'm thinking that scale would actually make a lot of sense. What are your thoughts?

I stumbled into this video while searching for info on D&D realism, namely whether various armors are noisy enough to impose disadvantage on stealth, and this is the only example I’ve found of anyone moving in any armor in a noise isolated environment. (Sound of movement in scale mail at 3:00) Can you do a video comparing the volume of various different armors?
@JadeSun72 жыл бұрын
I can tell you from experience that maile is very similarly loud, as it still has thousands of metal pieces moving against one another. Plate armor is also loud, as even though there are relatively fewer pieces, the pieces are larger and resonate more, and still hit one another, making clanging sounds as you move. Overall, I would leave the Disadvantage to stealth checks as they are in the PHB, and allow for fantasy materials and magical enchantments to make medium and heavy armors quiet and stealthy. Hope that helps! :D
@nekoman85602 жыл бұрын
@@JadeSun7 So anything with overlapping metal should be imposing disadvantage on stealth. Thank you for the info, it’s very helpful.
@JadeSun72 жыл бұрын
@@nekoman8560 the exception would be brigandine as the pieces are all tightly bound and sometimes sandwiched between cloth or leather. Lamellar armor is in the middle ground where depending on the exact construction it could go either way. Happy to help, and Happy gaming! :D
@williamgrissom1995 Жыл бұрын
From what I understand most all metal armor would more likely make noises. Though if you wore a snug tunic over scale mail, it would muffle the noise alot. I think chain mail would jingle more under a tunic than scale mail would, though it would muffle it some I'm sure. But I believe scouts that spied on the enemy went in just leather armor at most, because often the smallest noises can spook the horses or alert the dogs in the dead of night. During the day there is the issue with reflected light, which would alert the enemy way faster than noise, since the movement of people in armor in the camp would make it too noisy to notice much noise of the same kind of a armor outside of camp. So a armor worn under a tunic would likely work well in the day time only, and would be more risky at dead of night. Well that is my hypothesis anyway.

Scale armor really looks more like just an archaic version of mail that requires less labour, so it was likely popular until mail was properly industrialized. A retake of the concept then brought lamellar armour and brigantine, the latter largely being considered a more economic alternative to plate. The best interpretation of scale armour that's around is essentially mail with added scales, which is obviously more decorative intent than purely practical (though that added layer might help against structural damage of the armour).

I have made a lot of research for a 13th-14th century Rus style scale armor set I'm making and the Rus (Russia, Ukraine and Belarus) used it quite a lot, but still lamellar was more popular. One other thing to note, it that an upward thrust with enough angulation to go under the scales is very very hard to do with anything but a dagger if both warrior are on foot and it probably won't go very deep and lack power. According to my research, lamellar was more popular because it was very efficient for both cavalry and infantry, but for infantry, the rus judged scale to be slightly supperior as it doesn't limitate mobility as much. There are exemple of scale armor from the 1500's in Russia as it was never completely erased by plate there, probably because some warriors used skis during winter and a bow all year long.
@PewPewPlasmagun6 жыл бұрын
Nathan Carrier Hooray for crazy and at the same time practical Russian designs - then and now...
@mortenovergaard73972 жыл бұрын
i think you're right. in combat, a lot of hits are going to be awkward, opportunity hits, not at perfect angle etc. from experience in boxing and other combat sports this is usually the case. - the "perfect" textbook hit rarely happens. so scale armor would probably be decent armor 90+% of the time.
@nathanc9392 жыл бұрын
@@mortenovergaard7397You are right. It goes a bit further. Scale is weak against upward thrust, but with both men on foot, they are hard to place to start with and even on a static target, at chest height, they are akward and often don't have the angle to really exploit that weakness. If the man in scale is on horse and his opponent on foot though, the game just changed, you are naturally thrusting up and often with enough angle that scales will more often lift up and let the pointy thing through. A dagger can do the job on foot though, because it is short, it is easy to give it the right upward angle and thrust. Now apply this to moving targets and scale will be effective the vast majority of the time, probably even against daggers, but on horse back, spears from infantry become a serious issue, still will not get through most time, but often enough to be concerning. Reversely, lamellar has the gap up to down and is weak to downward thrust, which on a horse won't happen, but on foot, they are actually quite common and efficient, still a dagger once again is the most likely tool to go between the lamellars with a downward thrust. The failure rate of lamellar on foot, for moving targets, is likely lower than the failure rate of scales on horse back though. Again, I suspect that winter fighting has a lot to do with Russia keeping scale and lamellar around much longer.

I was able to weave a breastplate of scales several years ago, similar to what's shown. It was essentially 4-in-1 ring mail with the center ring being replaced by a scale. It was very pleasing visually, as well as surprisingly protective. The scales spread the point of impact over a MUCH wider area, and still protected against upward attacks slipping beneath the scales thanks to the underlying ringmail construction.
@roysmith70872 жыл бұрын
Isn't that a version of chainmail to stop the upwards thrust like that. I'd use it in conjunction with a shield 🛡️ for added protection. Good modeling to your very patient wife.
@spencergreen35816 жыл бұрын
I've always had the idea to start a company that would make jackets and other outerwear with hidden mail inside it, for self-defense. Like a heavy winter jacket with a layer of chainmail in it would offer a decent amount of protection, or even a scarf with mail inside could be wrapped around the forearm would be useful against someone with a knife
@billberg1264 Жыл бұрын
For armored jackets, you could do brigandine around the torso, and mail for the sleeves and below the waistline. Aside from the extra weight, people may dislike the noise of metal against metal. You might be able to work out some way of getting cloth between the rings.

Cool video, you're definitely correct about the scale mail Distributing more of the recursive force of impact than chainmail. The larger pieces being able to move slightly absorbs some of the impact. Lamellar being interchangeable is because it is just scalemail for a Horseman or Cavalier as most of the strikes to someone on horseback would be coming from underneath or direct. That's why it wasn't too uncommon to see a suit of armor that was partially lamellar especially near the lower half and scale mail near the upper half.
@constantinediomedes62776 жыл бұрын
To be honest, this was an amazing video as there aren't too many videos on scale armor to begin with (maybe one by scholagladiatora but his was more of a rant of some sorts to be fair) and each time Cara she looks more and more like a viking shieldmaiden haha
@knightedwolf6 жыл бұрын
That's real interesting. Up to now, all sources that I have read said that the difference between scale and lamellar is that scale only overlaps verticaly and lamellar over laps both vertically and horizontally. As far as over lapping upwards or downwards, again the sources I have read have said that it would depend on whether it was a foot man or a horse man who was wearing it, the footmans armor would tend to overlap downwards ( according to what I have read) because most blows would come in from above while a horsemans would over lap upwards cause of most blows coming from below. Certainly an interesting different view on the subject matter, thank you for posting this video.

Damn you two fit together perfectly. Never seen a couple that looks so much like one
@laughingdaffodils54506 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. My reading of the line between scale and lamellar is slightly different - lamellar *usually* overlaps upwards because we most commonly see it on kataphracts and central asian horsemen. Their main worry is a long spear or pike from the ground so they want the upward overlap. The Chinese used lamellar footmen's armor that overlapped downwards for centuries though. As I understand it the real dividing line is that scales are hung on a backing for scale, but laced together with no backing for lamellar. Obviously you can only hang scales downward, but you can lace them together in any direction you like. The Roman 'locking scale' is the exception, the scales are in fact connected to each other without a backing, but it doesn't have the characteristic give of a lamellar with long laces connecting strips of scales together, each ring has a very limited amount of play and then it must all lock solid so it doesn't look like it would be as comfortable as lamellar or as good at distributing force either, I imagine that's why we never see much of it. The 'scale' you have Cara(?) in is very interesting, if you look closely it's japanese 4:1 chain, with scales substituted for one type of ring. I've looked but been unable to find any evidence of it existing historically, which is really a shame because as you say it looks great and apparently would actually be reasonably effective as armor. I imagine it must be significantly heavier than an equivalent covering of euro 4:1 though.

So scale armors are best for dwarves. Also from my perspective, scale armor is very aesthetically pleasing, even more so than maille and plate. The scales are larger which make the even-ness more noticable than in maille and the design as a whole looks elegantly simple and not too complex like in plate. Then again, it probably depends on the quality and the designs that I've seen. There are, of course, ugly looking armors/weapons no matter which category they belong to.
