The reason why the game runs so well is because it's actually doing *less* rendering with the dots. The way in which the scanner in game works is how textures and such are actually rendered anyway, except in this case there is less detail being rendered because the textures aren't filled completely in.

Fun fact, if I'm not mistaken, you can start the game again in New Game + with all of the Scanner upgrades and you might find a few... secrets by having the Material Scanner early.

It is such a chill experience and not to hard on the eyes in vr or that the movements makes you dizzy. Edit: Just started watching the vid. Never noticed the man turn or following. Just thougt something fell with the bridges. Guess playing in vr made it less scary for me due to me missing stuff (probably looking another way). Did map everything what was fun.

About the reflections thing - the scanner probably recognizes water as water due to how dots disappear, so it probably auto-adds fake reflections to it so that you know it's water and not just endless abyss.

Scamner sombre is the only game I fully played in vr, but wouldn't call it an horror game. I recommend not to spoil yourself by watching everything or playing on pc and play it in vr yourself. It is such a great chill experience with a few creepy vibes and nice scenery. Edit: Had no time before so made the comment before watching this vid. I have completely missed that the man was turning and later following when you play lol. With the bridges just thought that some stuff fell, lol. Guess sometimes it pays of to play in vr. Did use the scanner to scan everything and made a complete 3D map.

using this tool instead of a flashlight has its perks, you would be able to have a wider field of view of whats around you in the dark. youd be able to traverse the environment better. not so good for something moving fast. theyre probably using it to map the cave for back at base or whatever.

This game seems really good, especially with the vfx. My only issue is that the high pitch from the scanner hurts my ears a bit. Especially when it's focused to a point.

I played this before, it's actually realy dope. Awesome game, my only regret is that there arent more games like this. The thing I loved the most is the way dots change color in to represent the distance. That, and water not getting dots.

I'm so glad you got to play this game! It's so unique and while maybe not "horrifying" I'd say.. "beautifully haunting" better describes it. Definitely an interesting way to tell a story, and I'm sure difficult to pull off. It's in my top faves for how unique and beautiful it is for a horror game :)

Ages ago, I went on a tour of Howe Caverns in NY. They had a boat section and came up to this part of the cave where it was pitch black and said “This is what it was like for the founders of the cave”. Quite spooky.

So from what I can picture from the game. It was mentioned that the cult from a thousand years ago believed that whoever died within the cave could never leave as a soul as they relive their last moments for the rest of eternity. Then it came to the mining section where a tragedy obviously occurred, it is likely who the person we play as was one of the casualties of the tragedy and unfortunately passed away. Perhaps it turned out to be true that ones soul couldn't escape so he was trapped within the cave "Reliving his last moments for all eternity", that idea being enforced when he said how many times has he been there. In the end we were playing a remanent, a simple "glitch" in the scanning device and damned to suffer forever. But that's just a theory. A game theory! xD

I think it's more that he is a spelunker exploring the caves behind the museum looking for the ancient temple. He set up all the lidar equipment himself on the way in. He got too excited about what he was seeing and went too deep.. died probably due to starvation or something. The story has you going backwards through his memory of exploring the cave, leaving components behind that were wasting his power. With all the stuff in the tent, this was clearly a days-long excursion and he probably hoped to find another way out. When he died, the curse came to life and forces him to relive his death in reverse. He can see everyone else reliving their deaths too

For those wondering why this, and not a Flashlight. Think about this. While yes, a Flashlight would make it easier to see than these dots and colors, think about what is happening. You are shooting a lazer, which makes a Dot, and is TRACKED by the Headset. In real time. You know what that means? It means you are MAPPING the Cave with this device. If they can Extract that map and put it on a 3D Table, or in a 3D Program, they would effectively have a 1 to 1 scale of everything in the cave. No hand drawing, no getting lost, no confusions. Better, they can copy it, give it to multiple people, and they can go through and make sure every inch is covered to be able to see everything in 3D. What's more, they could take this to the next level, and have the Data not only sent to the Device, the Headset, but also to computer/3D Table and have another team watching along as you scan and map the whole cave. This Device, if it would exist irl, would make mapping tunnels and caves infinitely more easier, better, and SAFER for people around the world. What's more, you can have each scan be a seperate file, and make a new scan every, say, 1 year, or 10 years, and compare to see how the caves and tunnels change over the years. What has Decade, what has broken, what was effected by an earth quake, is there man made changes of someone sneaking in or visiting. It would literally be Revolutionary Tech.

Haha it’s existed for a while, it’s called LiDAR and it uses lasers to measure distances, it’s used by driverless cars, and I think all the uses you mentioned. Humans have depth perception so a flashlight would be better for if you gotta see, but you’re definitely right that he’s mapping out the cave Newer phones even have it so you can use them to create 3d models!

i think the reason you use the scanner is because it says you can't remember this memory, so you have to use the scanner to re-remember the cave. Also at the end when all the dots disappear you forget everything that happened and have to re-remember all over again.

Woooah. I looked up the original this is based on (LIDAR) and it actually is quite a lot better done! I admit this map is very impressive, but the original does horror elements a lot better! (for example the dots program in the tool crashes and loses your dots that you scanned and you feel totally lost at times when something threatening may be around nearby.) The scanner tool overall is much more developed as well. I recommend checking that out.

It's a realy good horror game idea pretty unique. But the thing is its not originial. i don't know if they intended to steal the idea or they were just inspired by the original one. The original idea comes from a workshop mod on Garry's Mod. It's called LIDAR.

Na, the mod was inspired from this gamw, actually a game prior i think called voidness. Unsure, but Gmod didnt make the idea. But as all things, everything is inspired from something one way or another.

SPOILER ALERT The one thing I don't understand, storywise, is how the protagonist claims he was the first in a thousand years to go down there, yet there were miners and even a mining museum? Or was that part of what he imagined, maybe shortly before he died (I assume he either fell and succumbed to his injuries or couldn't find his way back out and starved because he mentions that he wishes he had been better prepared)?

Hey Insym, what about random challenge wheel again, but you add more and more challenges throughout a game. Depends on the map, but on Tanglewood maybe something like every 1.5-2 min you have to add one more challenge. So if you didn't get Spirit Box evidence yet and you get No Spirit Box challenge, then you just won't be able to use it in this game anymore. Obviously remove Asylum and Nightmare mode challenges and add some other fun stuff. Some of the ideas: chat = ears (it would be interesting to see how it might turn everything around); speedrun (you have to figure out the ghost in next X minutes or you lose/add 2 more challenges); 0% sanity (if not possible, then just use your cursed possession or roll another challenge instead if already used).
