Nice to see my mkiv live on. Oil was changed religiously at 4k miles so please change it soon lol. I owned it from 103k miles to 133k miles over 5 years and sold it to the owner before you. Daily drove it and loved every minute of it.

My daily/beater is a '90 Jetta turbodiesel, 5 spd manual. Oil sprayed underneath each fall, just put a new timing belt on @ 400,000 km's. Northern Ontario, good studded tires in winter. 1.6l, likes to rev., tight suspension, drives like a go-cart. Lots of fun in snow. Exceptional mpg. 0W40 diesel synthetic.

My 85’ gti came with a cluster that says 535,000 miles. I couldn’t ever figure out if that’s true but it still has the original 1.8 8v

As someone with an 03' 2.0 now clocking about 200k miles, I can confidently say that 2.0s are bulletproof from the oil pan to the intake manifold. These engines are fine to work on and require only what is necessary to keep on chugging (oil, plugs, timing belt, etc). These MkIVs are some fun, good-looking, workhorses. P.S. Please tell him to change the oil.

i have the same thing as yours, parents bought it cheap 2011 for 5k rebuilt, its handled pretty well and now its being passed on to me, only major thing i remember happening to it is our fuel pump bit the dust on the highway

My family ran a 1.6 one of these in the UK for 15 yrs. We loved that car, so dependable yet so uncomplicated. We had to sell it, but I've been tracking it's annual MOT check and it is still on the road. Long may it run

Good to know that these Mk4 2.0L are great. I just bought a 99 beetle for $2400, it only has 90k miles.

Back in 2002 I leased a brand new 1.8T Jetta. within the first 1500 miles, it left me stranded, dealership said it was the plugs and Coil Packs. After that, it was very reliable.

I bought my 04 golf 2.slow 5 speed last year for $1,500 off of the original owner. Has 234,000 miles and feels like it has half the mileage, if that. Best winter beater I’ve ever had. With winter tires these are tanks.

The only thing more reliable than a manual MK4 2.0, is a manual MK3 2.0. If you want 'deadbolt' reliable winter beater, swap a 2.0 ABA into a manual MK2 Jetta GL. My GL had manual locks, manual mirrors, manual windows, manual sunroof, manual front seats and manual transmission.
