In this week's KZbin video I'm trimming two different types of plate, together with showing you how I fix warped batts and numerous other topics, these video's always end up containing so many random tips and tricks.

*It's worth noting! That you won't get the same results as I do if you're firing in oxidation. The reduction firing really helps with this process.
*I throw using both a Rohde HMT 500 & 600 potter's wheel and fire using Rohde kilns too, the electric is a TE-200 and the gas kiln is a KG-340.

Florian, thank you for the careful way that you narrate your videos. It really helps to hear how and why you trim plates, because plates are difficult to throw and keep consistent. I really appreciate how you both show and explain how you work. Thanks!

One tip on your warped bats- think of a warp as an uneven drying of a solid wood plane. A thick piece of wood if wetter on one side will warp or cup away from the wet side as it dries. Try wetting the dry side and allowing it to dry. Of course a moisture meter would tell you scientifically what the moisture content is which can give you a better plan to correct. It looks like you found a remedy without actually all the water and wood science. Great to watch your work. Thanks.

I really like the 1st plate for eating, I have an affinity for high rimmed plate / shallow bowls. Although for kitchen use it would probably need to be about half the diameter.

Thanks. I’m looking forward to seeing how those plates are glazed and fired.

Me too! Soon hopefully, I’m in the midst of glazing and firing a bunch of work, which means I’ll be able to film the concluding part for a bunch of videos.

I use aluminium composite bats now instead of MDF. They remain dead flat.

Does that still absorb water? If I understand correctly the absorption is important for flatware, like plates, to dry relatively evenly

@LiiiHemma No, aluminium composite does not absorb water, which is its advantage over MDF.

Anyone regularly making plates? Out of 20 Plates within the last few months only 2 survived more or less well. How how how???? The pasta bowls turned out fine but everything flat just didn’t 🥺

Flatware can be particularly difficult to produce. Once trimmed, it needs to be dried slowly and evenly, otherwise plated can crack or warp. Such a thin, wide expanse of clay is prone to difficulties. If you’re throwing or hand building plates, I find it helps to keep them slightly on the thicker side, with even walls throughout, including the base. Good luck! They’ll get better the more you practice!
