Just watched the movie and the documentary... Great stuff.. Always loved the AC Cobras. The gt40 is my dream car though. In 73 I was a freshman in HS and had a Ford Falcon With a 289 with 3 on the tree.. My stepdad and I pulled the motor from a wrecked mustang.. Had to cut fenderwells some and bang on the firewall with a ballpeen hammer to make it fit.. It was sweet when it was done. It was a good car. Wish I still had it..

It needs to be broken down in a 3 series video . One with Shelby and the AC Cobra and Fords V8 engine and it’s success on the track . Next , the development of the Daytona Coupe and it’s engine and success on the track all the way to the 24 Hours of LeMans and win . The final series with Ford Motor Company with the GT40 development with Shelby’s involvement to its final wins at 24 hour of LeMans with a blend of the Mark IV and it’s success before Ford pulled the plug .

That Kamm tail or Kammback is named after a German aerodynamicist named Kamm who invented this type of abrupt rear end design in the 30’s, l love this car and I can’t believe they race it still ! Gotta be worth in the 8 figures .

@kevinbarrett9615 - When Peter Brock left GM to work for Shelby, he brought GM's copies of Kamm's drawings and figures relating to this Kamm tail shape. They were all in German, just as GM had procured them, but Brock understood the engineering figures enough to make good use of them in designing the Daytona Coupe. P.S. - Are you from Connecticut?

What is so amazing about these Shelby's? Is that more records were broken using a 289 that any other engines. And was fitted almost entirely on an AC Chassis I believe. But that rear deck was very controversial. If is were not for Peter Brock insisting on the use of a notable (deceased) German designer rear deck concept. Shelby might have not approved this coupe. Fantastic!!

@windronner1 - The Daytona Coupe was built over a modified AC chassis, but for the most part it was still an AC chassis.

@@Loulovesspeed very true. AC had aero of a brick over 145 mph. The genius was in chassis. With engine slung low and behind front axle

​@@windronner1 - The AC roadster was very poor aerodynamically, that is why the much smoother aero body of the Daytona was built, allowing the car to reach just under 200 mph on the long straight at Le Mans. The chassis had no affect on the top speed.

The story of the design and creation of the Shelby Daytona Coupe is incredible. Pete Brock was only in his early 20’s when he designed the car. No computer aided design tools to help him, no wind tunnels etc to test the aero dynamics of the car. Brock was just a straight up car design genius. The Daytona coupe body designed by Brock was put onto a Cobra chassis with the exact same engine, transmission and suspension. The top speed of the car increased from 160 mph to 190 mph all due to Brock’s more aerodynamic body design. Furthermore, because the car was more aerodynamic it also got better gas mileage which is very important for racing.

We have to remember, in the day, there was little air conditioning, people were not as climate conditioned as we are today, doesn't make the car any cooler to drive, but it does put it all in perspective...people were more used to heat.

@hanktorrance6855 - The Daytona was a pure race car and not a production vehicle, so air conditioning was never in the plan, as no race cars then had AC.

@@Loulovesspeed my point was not about the car, it was about life. in those days ac was not a standard in any situation, home auto even store, therefore people were less heat sensitive so driving a car which today would seem unberably hot was not the case then.
