In this video I explain Zach Best's CRGE (Conjectural roleplaying gamemaster emulator) in less than 15min. This is a great game system as well as a wonderful tool to find writing inspiration. You can basically adapt it to any RPG system; use it for solo RPGs as well as with other people; or play online PbP games.
Here's a link to Part 2: • CRGE Solo/GMless RPG E... , where I play through the first scene of the tutorial to show you a concrete example of just how powerful a tool this is!
And another to Part 3: • CRGE Solo/GMless RPG E... , where I finish up the tutorial in dramatic fashion, complete with animated cutscenes!
Table of Contents:
00:00 Intro Pitch.
00:53 Introducing CRGE.
02:38 The Loom of Fate (central mechanic.)
05:23 What Can You Do With this System?
07:26 The Vignette Framework (complementary mechanic.)
10:05 Threads (complementary mechanic.)
11:04 Example with Loom + Vignette + Threads.
14:54 Final Thoughts
Tell me how you like this video, and if you do I will be making more content like this. Also, I am toying with the idea of making a series of me improvising stories by using CRGE. You'll see how such a series might look like in part 2 of this, so tell me if that would interest you!
Thanks for watching, and keep on being creative!

Hey there! This is Zach’s widow. I just stumbled across your videos and think they’re great! Zach’s love of gaming was infectious, and he would be thrilled that you are helping people use his guides to play.

Definitely going to check out CRGE. I was already using UNE and didn't realize Zach Best had made that also. Very sad to read about his illness :(

Thanks for posting this. I've found the CRGE to be an excellent tool in finding unexpected turns, ideas, and inspirations in my current solo game/story.

Thank you for tuning in! And I agree with you, I feel like it's amazing at making me think outside the box, and I quite like how suspenseful some of the rolls get

Great video. I read CRGE in my early Solo studies too, but don't use it. Your video made me think that it is time to revisit it!

Thanks! Yeah, it can be a little difficult to wrap your head around the system at first, but once you start getting used to it, I find it pretty elegant and easy to use

@@ValTheVideomancer I think it suffers from labelling things weirdly - The Loom, Surge Points ...wtf? Yes I know its trying to deal with abstract stuff but...Also it seems pointless having subtly different numbers for the Yes, No stuff for "to conflict" etc. Simplify it - have them all the same. I suppose you can simplify it as appropriate

We used the AD&D 1st Ed. Dungeon Masters Guide, Appendix A: Random Dungeon Generation, all the time, back in the day to have GMless adventures. Pages 169-173.

Nice video. This might be a dumb thing to ask but me and some friends are planning on playing an rpg sometime this year but I don't really have any experience playing. So do you think this would work as a sort of "tutorial" so to speak?

Thanks! Hmm sure, I suppose my video could be a good way of communicating the basics to them, but to be sure of yourself, you probably want to read pages 6 through 23, or at least have a look at appendix II to make sure you understand how the game plays out!

I winder if CRGE will play nicer with pre-written adventures then Mythic.🤔

I haven't played these systems with pre-written adventures very much, but my intuition tells me that if your adventure already offers a lot of guidance, CRGE would probably be less of a hassle to work with. So far, I find Mythic to be really good when I am inventing a new story and I have a bunch of plots to keep track of, but it does require more bookkeeping. Also, I find Mythic to be less random, but maybe in a pre-written a bit more randomness would be refreshing.
