After 9 years of non enjoyable walks with my dog (pulling arm out of socket, barked at people and dogs) I have tried what I thought was everything, spent so much money on "tools"....found you used your methods and in two days I have a completely different dog that I now enjoy and can't wait to walk! This gives me so much hope as mine is now 7 years old and has been extremely reactive (barking, lunging at the end of her lead etc) to dogs and people most of her life. It would be a dream come true to go for a walk with her not reacting to things 😅

I paid hundreds of dollars for a trainer who put my dog on a prong collar and wanted to use an e collar when that wasn't working. My dog has made more progress with your methods than anything else I've tried. I truly appreciate what you are doing for dog owners, and how you keep it genuine by not trying to sell me anything with promo codes. Your videos help me learn about the warning signs to look for in my rescue dog without knowing her full history. She loves other dogs, but definitely does not tolerate certain behaviors at the dog park. Now I know how to anticipate it so I can take her attention before she gets out of control.

Yes, let your dog get dominated by another dog. thumbs up Very good Job. Nottt, Your dog should see you as the Alpha, your dog shouldn't be "respectful" to other dogs because it got dominated, It needs to be "respectful" because of Confidence, getting your dog dominated, while you do nothing, is not a way to build confidence in a dog. THis guy is a douchebag, I hope he took that muzzle of the other dog.

How is everything going now? Same exact thing happened to my American Staffordshire terrier. Spent tons Of money on herm sprenger prong collars and Dogtra e-collars and trainers telling me that’s what will work for my dog but in reality the prong collar only worked for leash pulling she walks beautifully now but the reactivity is still there so when I would use the prong or the e-collar for other dogs she would get so over stimulated and start jumping up on me biting my arms causing little bruises, biting the leash and just being over it. So now I found Joel and I’m wanting to try something new. I was doing the prong collar for 1yr and the e-collar for only a very short time probably only used it 3x on walks definitely no more then 5x cause I didn’t like how she acted with it on, she was very fearful almost of it then over stimulated when we would see a dog and mind you she was not higher then a 7. Your comment gives me hope!

We were told our dog might never be able to be off leash at a dog park. Now she’s off leash and has the best recall of all dogs at the park. She has also learned to not be possessive of the ball she is playing fetch with when other dogs are chasing her.

My girl (who has only had one, very small, dog before she met me and my pup) wanted to get a Mal puppy. So I introduced her to one of the protection dogs I work with. Cured her of that idea real quick lol. I love dealing with dogs like this, though. They need leadership and so few people are equipped to give it to them, I feel a responsibility to them so they don't end up being put down.

Thats awesome! Yes, dont give up! Most dogs, deff more than what ppl might think, are never lost causes! It just takes the right steps, the right directions and you are able to see or achieve mass improvement in your pup and you both learn not only how to deal with these issues but can also learn tons more about each other and learn from each other, some dogs And owners just never take the time or realize life with their pup or pups can be so soooo much w a healthy dog, mentally and emotionally and a healthy owner who trust, can also help you get to a better place emotionally or mentally just because your taking the time to learn and deal with these stressful or stress dealing issues and your doing so with your fur baby, your best friend, your guard dog, your helper around the farm or whatever you consider or see these amazing creatures as :) good luck !

I was thinking the same about him jumping the fence lol. My new neighbor has a beautiful 2 year old malinios who was very undersocialized; she would bark or growl from a distance at anyone and didn’t know what to do when my dogs came to the fence. The neighbor said she has never liked any people or dogs but I could tell she was afraid not aggressive. She wouldn’t come near me and just stared, ran away and barked if I was outside until one day after about 5 months of trying to make friends with her I picked up a dog toy and threw it to her. Now she is my best friend and easily jumps over the 6ft fence to play with me and gets along great with my 3 shibas. She is so much more social now and it’s like a completely different dog! The neighbor is happy to see her have fun and get exercise. It is truly amazing how high they can jump with such ease!

Before finding your channel, I didn't realize that using a dog to train other dogs was a legitimate training method. Growing up, we always had 2 dogs. We would stagger their ages so that when one passed away, the other was middle-aged and ready to help raise the new puppy. Of course, we still had a hand in training the puppy, but the older dog would already know the rules and often take it upon themselves to correct the puppy on their own. I just thought we were lazy, letting the older dog do quite a bit of the hard work. Actually, now that I think about it, that might explain why we kept getting lucky with our terriers always being so good about not chasing or harming our chickens and other small farm animals. We really did get lucky with our first terrier, but maybe the rest weren't so much luck, but rather the result of those rules being passed down from one dog to another. Our first dog would tan our second puppy's hide any time he tried to go after a pet/farm animal. That puppy, in turn, grew up to pass down those rules to his own protege and so on. 🤔

YES! Exactly! Dogs used to have more casual, unsupervised exposure to older dogs. Dogs were allowed to run freely, yet they mostly stayed around their own homes, because, heck that’s where the food was. Older dogs would teach the young whippersnappers to mind their manners so everyone got along except for the known aggressive dogs kept in kennels or on chains. Now we live so close together, dogs can’t run free except in specific parks.

That's how I trained my dogs and my family members dogs in the past. Have a friend or family member or yourself with a well mannered dog that knows the basics. The young dogs will copy the older dog/s behavior really fast. The dog I have now didn't get that same basic training. I didn't have him yet and the 2 other owners were teaching him bad habits. There's one issue, he will hump all animals and doesn't matter what it is or how big. He acts like it is his right to do this. He doesn't fight at all just doesn't respect boundaries with them. I don't know what his life was like before but damn lol.

I'm lucky that I rent from family members. I only have 1 dog now, but they have 2. We share a yard. The dogs all run back and forth between both houses. They also have 2 cats who are not afraid to let the dogs have it when the pups get inappropriate. We share a yard, so the dogs all run back and forth between both houses, but everyone knows which house to go home to at the end of the day. Unfortunately, the cats aren't allowed in my house because I'm allergic. Otherwise, they would be welcome in both houses too.

Not the dog park kind of dog..not the kind of dog that needs to have many friends other than that, they are great, super off-switch and very loyal :)

LOVE watching Prince communicating with other dogs! I think one thing as humans we will never be as good at as dogs is that dogs/animals are so in the moment that they have the ability to match equal amounts of pressure/energy, instantaneously. This video showcases that beautifully. Maybe that might be partly why Prince kept going at this other dogs head, because he needed to match this other dogs level of intensity. And really drive the point home.

Wow there are so many gems in this video!!!! Your method/algorithm is outstanding of course but I think your real "secret" is reading the dogs' behaviors. Several parts of this vid could be slowed to 0.25x playback with detailed descriptions of what's happening (ears/tails/hackles/lips/tongue/stance/movement) and I at least would find it enormously helpful. Maybe you would consider releasing a couple vid clips like •initial run-up •GSD & Magnus w/ M on leash •pasture All these with detailed body language descriptions/explanations would be so helpful. Say what YOU are seeing. I often miss things unless you say it happened then I go back & see it. I think the key is ppl need to get better at reading dogs. I've only been watching u a year so if ppl think I know stuff there's a true knowledge deficit out there. You, your family, Princey and staff are a blessing to this earth🐾❤️🙏🏽

She is so excited to go to the dog park and comes home so happy and so well behaved. She enjoys every trip to the dog park, and other dogs love playing with her while she's there. Dog parks give my dog a better life.

Your videos are so helpful. I have been watching you since I got my rescue Kelpie/Cattle Dog Mix almost a year ago. She had serious fear aggression of other dogs. Her leash reactivity was severe. Since I did not always have access to helper dogs the training is slow but it has been very successful. Olive can now play with other dogs in dog parks. Now that she is not fearful she gets along with all kinds of dogs, Great Danes, German Shepherds, Pit Bulls, Labs, Golden Retrievers, Terriers, Chihuahuas and mutts. Big, small and in between, she has not met a dog she doesn't like. She has been amazing judging which dogs can match her energy. She figures out the dogs that like to play hard and leaves the others alone. We are still working on her leash manners but she is not turning into Cujo when she sees another dog like she used to. I was able to take her to a neighborhood street festival this past weekend. She managed to keep her cool around the crowds, the loud music and being fairly close to other dogs. She wasn't perfect but she is better at turning her attention to me when I give her the "look" (at me) command. I give her a treat and praise her highly. She loves doing her job right! I use a martingale collar. Luckily I have never had to use a muzzle. Olive has come so far and she is now a happy, more confident dog. Joel's training tips are the best I have found for training a reactive dog. Thanks Joel.

I'm so happy and proud, my two older rescue labs used to lose their minds at all other dogs, and generally try to pull me off my feet. After 6 weeks w your methods, both can meet crireria about 85% of the time walking in the neighbourhood. Today the more aggressive one met a few nice dogs successfully at the dog park today, close to closing time. True, she was in a muzzle, a harness, and two leads, but man, it's so good to see that all three of us should be able to socialize a lot more soon. The other lab, who is impossible w a head halter and a muzzle, also got his first dog park experience today. In a harness, w one lead on his back and another on the front chest strap of the harness.... about 75% of a gentle leader I'd say. He is less protective, met one dog sort of OK. Little miracle w both of them. So happy!

OMGosh, I had to stop the video to say that this is fantastic. I like how he explains the training, what's going through his head, and even his philosophy. So much more than what the title says, as in all your videos. You are so genuine and real. Way to go, Joel, and thank you! 👏👏👏

Been binging your videos last 2 weeks. Amazing. RIP Bosco, Long Live Prince. I know Bosco is your favorite of all time but quit comparing Prince to him so much. Prince is GREAT, a pure sweet heart and he does it all for your love. Being aggressive is not even in his nature but he does his job very professionally.

You are the only trainer that I know Joel where your dog ACTUALLY helps dogs. I tried taking my dog to a trainer before I found your videos and they literally said "oh we can't have your dog around any dog at all so I can't compromise my dog to help yours" which I understand but they wanted to do a board and train which I don't like because I want to be the one training my dog and working with my dog, plus you have no idea what people do in the privacy of their own home 🤷

Thanks for this great video - and thanks so much for doing a voice over without the sounds of dogs barking! We just adopted a 7 mo old dane/lab/pittie mix from an LA shelter and she is barking reactive from a month on the "inside." If she hears barking on my computer, she runs to the window barking! We have two 12 yr olds, and BamBam is our Prince dog. The wise one who is calm but will let another dog know they crossed the line. Bam will help train

Can I just say how impressed by your training methods , I had my female dobie some years ago and worked for many long hours on training (in no way was she perfect), for me they are the perfect dog breed with huge potential. I live in Scotland GB and just needed to say I totally agree with all your mehods and the reasoning for doing it, please continue with the good work and these informative videos.

We have three dogs, one older Aussie (who is an excellent helper dog and has helped us foster many puppies) and two cattle dogs (one a 3 year old rescue we got in 2020 and one we got from a breeder as a puppy. Our rescue, Tess, was so frightened of everything when we first got her and completely cowered with people, cars, loud noises and shirtless men. She didn’t even want to walk, we had to carry her everywhere. 4 months after that first meeting and she was the biggest snuggle lap dog of all time. She can’t get enough interaction and is so sweet and LOVES walks. Then we got our puppy, Ginger in 2021. She has done really well with training, but the only thing we don’t like is her reactiveness to other dogs, especially large ones. When she was 5 months old, our daughter brought her big German shepherd Rocky over. He’s always been great around other dogs and playful and just a big goofball. Rocky just wanted to play with her and went up her her and she RAN off and he ran after her to get her to play, bowing down and everything. Ever since that time, she just goes nuts when another dog comes around and we can’t get them together because she attacks Rocky. Rocky just ignores her and she runs up to him and bites his legs. Ginger is excellent with cats, our other dogs, our kids with special needs and even babies, just other dogs she freaks out. Even seeing a dog walking with an owner by our house and her hair on her neck and back raises up. She’s only 17 months old and we keep working on it but I’m afraid to take her to a dog park. I will get her a muzzle and work with her on Rocky as you have here. I know Rocky won’t hurt her as I trained him as well. He gets along great with our other dogs too.

I’m a trainer and manage a dog daycare. My hound knows that I’m the boss and that she’s boss in the park when I’m not around. I see her correct dogs, accept dogs and play with dogs every day. She is the best! Not as brave as Prince though.

Hey Beckman family 🐾💌, My Rottie mix 1+yrs old boy has the dominance/protective behavior I think 🤔with random dogs he doesn't know. I don't know it's interesting, we could be with his pack of 8 Huskies, 2 GSD, 2 Malinois, few smaller breeds some he just met and others he grew up with. If a new dog comes over to us he reacts sometimes ok and sometimes not ok😬 whether it's 2of us or 20, smh. The dog park he loves it but I'm not a fan many sick, behavioral etc. Great video again!

This is ONE of the issues I have with my GSD/Collie/Weimaraner mix and this is pretty much exactly what I did and he's so much better now. It was quite bad, he'd lunge, hair would go up on his back and he'd bark like crazy. Still not perfect, but it's day and night. This is good stuff dude and a lot of your videos have been a great help with my guy.

Joel - Dog parks in US might be "bad" places but not so in Australia. Since 4 months old I've taken my Labradoodle to 2 different dog parks in my city every day. There's always between 5 and 30 dogs at these parks, changing on a daily basis. After 1 month my dog had met over 100 different dogs and was well socialised. 18 months later there's never been a dog fight at either of these 2 dog parks. All the dogs are well trained with respectful, well informed and friendly owners. Americans are different to Aussies so what applies there does not in other countries. My dog now has about 50 very good dog friends and loves his doggie parks :)

I’ve just been recommended your videos on KZbin. I was surprised to hear about this Caesar fellow who got cancelled for saying dogs need authority. In my pack I am the alpha, end of. I have no idea how anyone could claim to be a dog trainer and not know about basic pack hierarchy?! Enjoying your videos. I’ve always had good dogs, and if I’m walking my dog in a public area I always look at the owner and their dogs understanding of their place in that relationship to establish any potential risk to my pack..

My dogs are always angels at dog parks enjoying socializing with other dogs. Now it took me years to establish dominance on a leash for them to behave on a leash meeting other dogs. You, Prince, Doggy Daddy, and Cesar are 100% correct. The positive reinforcement people are only successful in with nondominant dogs. My Chester was not food or positive driven at all. Chester was a full dominant dog to protect me on a leash until I mastered dominance. The funny thing is he ended up stomping and huffing at me when he understood I was done with his behaviour. Chester was a smart butter cup. Now Bear he is barracuda that all I need to do is raise my voice and he thinks the world is ending.

How I wish we could have seen this channel 5 years ago. We have a beautiful GSD, female. She is a big girl at 78lbs. Her main problem is dog aggressive. Other than this problem she is a great dog. Extremely obedient and well aware of the hierarchy of the family unit. Off our property, at the vet etc. she is perfectly fine with people. But it doesn't matter where we are, the sight of another dog and she goes from 0-100 in a micro-second. An example is my wife had her on a leash (last time she did from this day forward about 2 years ago) when a large black Lab was loose and Xena saw her. She lunged to take off towards the dog, knocking my wife over and Xena literally dragged my wife 10 - 12 feet through the yard when I ran outside and stopped it. So that is our deal. We can't take her to parks etc. My wife cannot walk her on a leash because she is A) not strong enough to hold her if she alerts and B) Xena doesn't mind her like she minds me. We took her to a gal who specializes in GSDs. Did not work. Xena just flat out would not mind her and is too large for her to properly adjust her behavior. I sure wish you guys were not on the other side of the country!!
The most subtle body language cue I've ever pointed out to you guys.
