The woman in the car ranting about how her son can't afford everything she could when she was his age is my hero. My parents and many others don't seem to understand how expensive everything is now. It's worse in the cities and worse in California. I live in a Californian city. I'm so screwed

My parents thankfully do understand. She knows they were super lucky entering into the housing market when they did. I’ll tell you the analogy she uses to explain it and maybe that can help you explain to your parents. So it all comes down to how much money you have free to spend right. Let’s liken that to frogs trying to jump up a staircase. So you have two frogs. One can just barely clear the first stair with its jump (aka has the capital for their very first apartment), and the other just barely can’t reach that first step. Now the first frog having made it up the first step can jump up to the second step, and from there to the third step and so on until they reach the top. Meanwhile the second frog is still struggling to clear that first step at the very bottom. Apart from this one tiny thing these frogs are identical and yet one is at the top and one is at the bottom. The same with housing. The person who was able to add their first apartment can usually afford to upgrade and buy more housing by selling off the one they already have. Eventually they will probably end up with a house. Then you have the people who can’t afford that first apartment, they probably won’t be able to get a house. We have created an environment where that first apartment is an incredibly difficult bar to clear. So naturally young people are struggling with housing as a result.

My parents understand but they struggled until just a couple of years ago with paying bills. I finally got my CPA license and am so relieved because I will probably have to take care of them when they're older. My dad has worked 60-80 hours a week for years but will probably get hardly anything from SS. The system is fucked.

My mom had this vision of me doing 2 years at my community College then moving to Houston to work and complete another 2 to get my bachelor's. We lived in a tiny town with very few jobs an hour away from Houston and that plan wasn't very different from what she did when she was my age so I showed her the actual job market for a 2 year degree and Houston rent. She understood and said "Well at least I'll have my baby at home for a few more years than expected." Silver lining if there ever was one.

Here in sweden rent isn't the absolute worst but finding an apartment will take you at least 5+ years unless you somehow (rich parents) can buy one. Its incredibly common for adults to live at home up until their 30s, not by choice. I've heard it's very similar in most of the world right now. Sure new apartments are built all the time... but they're built for the people that can afford a new place.

A couple years back the laws in my area changed so that minors didn't have to be paid minimum wage. When one of the adult employees asked for a payraise the owners would randomly select an employee that was a minor and lower their wages/hour to give the adult the payraise. They did this to 3 kids before one of their parents noticed and confronted the owners about it. But in the process of "fixing" the wages they took the raises away from the ones that had been given one. We had 7 people end up quitting because of this. Soon after all this, one of the owners went out and bought a new sports car. He called us all outside to look at it because "We made it possible for him to get the car of his dreams". I stayed out a little longer to talk to him explaining that what he just did was fucked up and that at least 4 of the people he just forced to look at his new toy were struggling to make rent. There's a happy ending though. Later that day some guy that just wanted icecream didn't like that the sports car was taking up 3 spaces and bro slashed 3 of the tires.

I talked to my boss about it repeatedly and she said it was over her head. The higher ups ignored me. So I quit. And so did half the store that was inquiring about the same thing. This happened to me! For my second job in 2021-2022 (my main job was as a teacher in an inner city) I worked at a chain bookstore. My manager would complain to me about how people would “quiet quit” after working a single shift. I “joked” that it was probably because of the help wanted signs at the stores on either side of us offering $15 and $17per hour. I was getting paid $8 and was only staying because of the book discount for my classroom. I quit both jobs when I found out the assistant manager was making $10k per year more than me, even though I was working two jobs

Same thing happened at my old job. We were getting $11/hr when a very similar store opened up directly next to ours offering $15 an hour. Lots of people brought this up to management, and when we got a $0.12 raise, half the staff quit, in addition to those who had quit before the raise. Guess what? About a month later our pay was raised to $14/hr (still a better deal because cashiers at the other store only made $10 rather than the stocker's $15) so that they could actually have an attractive enough rate to hire new people.

Years ago my dad brought cold treats to construction workers because it was too hot outside and they had been working for hours. I kid you not, after bringing them FREE ICECREAM and treating them for the past week he got some sort of cease and desist from the company for ‘interfering with worker productivity’ and ‘trespassing the work site’ and that they’d sue him. He literally just pulled up, brought the stuff out the car, asked if they wanted it, one of the guys would come over and retrieve the treats, they’d finish them before they melted and go back to work. I’ll admit that I don’t know the legality of offering treats to laborers on the clock, but cmon man! They shouldn’t be working in the Texas summer heat that can spike to 38°c! That can’t be humane!

I like to think maybe we and some of gen X are putting our money where our mouths are and making things better by being less likely to kick out or cut off our kids. Many of us never had the chance to turn down work regardless of what kind of sh*tty job it was or how cagey they were about pay as our parents either couldn't or wouldn't support us. What I'm seeing now is that it's getting less stigmatised for people college/uni age and above to stay living with parents and, unlike most of my friends, they aren't expected to pay massive amounts to their parents as board. I literally have one friend who had to sleep on the sofa in the living room but still paid a few hundred quid a month in board, was expected to buy all her own food, pay for things for her younger siblings, and still be keeping up with car payments and saving for a rent deposit. One of my sister's friends lived in an unconverted garden shed in her parents' garden. If nothing else, we can at least do better by the next generation than sticking them on sofas and in sheds and still demanding they pay us rent.

No wonder no one can live alone.. when a one-bedroom is housing 5+ or something. If you have roommates, some places charge more per head. Fun. I can see why child labor laws are relaxing. Why should Timmy go to school? Doesn't he know that there's no future from education, and that his true path has always been poverty? Pshaw. I'm in Canada, witnessing a lot of professional people suddenly needing side jobs. You can quit jobs, but you can't escape needing to work. Even in disability settings, the $ sent is less than rent. You know, because that makes sense. You lose your shelter portion ($500.. woo! Sign me up for a walk-in closet in a bedroom.. in a stranger's house!!) The moment you lose housing. Good luck renting. Another distressing thought I have about children working is the very real possibility Timmy is the only one in the house with any jobs.

Yeh, it's the old "evil snitch"-mentality: The issue isn't me being an asshole or doing super illegal and dangerous stuff, that's fine - the real issue is people caaling me out for doing it or reporting it to officials or whatever. Like people actually consider radar traps to be an issue because they are just there so police can "steal" your money - ignoring the fact that you'd actually have to freakin break the law and possibly put other people in danger by going significantly faster than you are supposed to in order to get a ticket when going past a radar trap.

So I discussed this whole "changing from work mode to non-work mode" thing with my therapist and it turns out you can pretty easily train yourself to do so. Example: she told me her partner started keeping one of those pull string lamps at their desk and they turn it on when they start work and turn it off when they stop. It has the effect of training your brain when it needs to be in which mode - no commute needed!

Here in Australia, we have stuff called “the odd bunch” in some grocery stores. When a fruit or vegetable is weirdly shaped or coloured but still edible, they will be packaged as “odd bunch” and sold for cheaper, reducing waste and allowing people to buy things cheaply while also still profiting the business. It’s great for people who can’t afford regularly priced fresh produce or for affordably purchasing vegetables for things like baking.

If it actually expired (still fine to eat), then employees were allowed to take home whatever we wanted for free. I buy frozen fruit now from a brand called "Perfectly Imperfect" - it's misshapen pieces that wouldn't sell fresh, but they slice and freeze it, and most of the time it doesn't even look different. It's not that much cheaper, but I like the idea of trying to lower waste.

The clip with the mom actually surprised me. I’m glad someone from Gen X acknowledges the situation millennials/Gen Z are in when it comes to housing/living. Bc my own mother doesn’t- she just assumes people don’t work hard or “smart” enough. But when I was living in a trailer in a really sketchy part of town (very rural, but still had a lot of crime, especially gun violence), she was like “Just move back into town, please!!” And I said “I can’t afford it.” Bc I worked full time for Walmart, and based on by paycheck, that was what I could afford. Now I was a tad luckier than most, bc I owned my own car outright, all I had to pay was insurance and gas, but I took that money and squirreled it away in case I ended up losing my job, or more likely, going insane and finally just storming out bc I couldn’t take being treated so badly all the time anymore. And working for Walmart was AFTER having gotten a Bachelors degree and halfway through to a Masters degree before having to leave the program to take care of my grandfather who had dementia. I don’t understand what both employers and older generations Do Not Get that wages have absolutely not kept up with inflation and many millennials and Gen Z often skip meals, have to have roommates, and don’t want kids bc they can’t afford rent or utilities otherwise. I skipped many a meal working for Walmart. That’s unacceptable. I’m not saying we should eat the rich, but I understand why media that enacts that as a fantasy is appealing to people.

@@Alverant For real. Currently I am living with my mother bc she is partially disabled and needed my help, but bc she can afford it, we live in an extremely expensive/tourist heavy city. And what I see happening here is two fold- one foreign business/wealthy people are building massive skyscrapers that are so expensive only people like them can afford a unit (whether business or home), and two, bc of the tourism, people who can afford any type of home are buying them up as fast as possible to turn them in AirBnBs or short term rentals. Which is making the working class of the city unable to afford to buy anything.

I have held some kind of customer service job since I was 12 ( worked under the table at some places so I wasn't officially on the books) and it's taken me 30 years to see how much of a mental toll it's taken from me. The mindset was always "if you're not working you're lazy and who cares if your job is terrible no one likes work" never really understanding that we spend more time working then we do anything else ( assuming you're doing more then 25 hours a week, no shade on part time). I'm still looking for a job now and even with the skills I've learned I'm still running into places that either lie about being remote, want to pay 12 an hour OR will make you check in with them for bathroom time as that counts against your "productivity". Last time I checked I shouldn't have to ask permission to go to the bathroom but here we are....but sure yeah no one wants to work. 🙄

They were fairly understanding about my mental health issues, and they were generally friendly, but being friendly doesn't pay my bills. Then they had a company satisfaction survey they sent out to everyone. I made sure to really complain about the pay issues. Then one of the C-level people sent out this cringe as heck email, and made sure to mark it where you couldn't screenshot it, save it, or print it. The email talked about how people needed to be loyal to their colleagues basically instead of paper (aka money) and how we were all like family. Bad news for them, people are getting more comfortable with going no contact with their toxic family members. Can't expect your workers to be as loyal to you when you don't care whether they can pay their bills, save for retirement, or truly feel successful in their careers. I left shortly after that when I got a new job. I found out later that a bunch more left after me for similar reasons, and because of some chaotic management of some of the projects.

The article about commuting was weird, but I can confirm from experience that walking home for 20-25 mins or biking for 10 mins is a great way to wind down; provides you with fresh air, some movement after sitting around for hours, you can run by a grocery store real quick, etc. I have a friend who loves his 15 min bus ride where he can pop in some earphones and chill. 2 hour car drive through traffic jam? not so much

the lady at the end made me feel so much better, my mother is constantly telling that i don't work hard enough and that at my age (21) she already was out of the house and working even without going to college (had to drop out cuz covid whipped our savings) and that i'm just lazy. I've been working jobs as a replacer for 2 or 3 months each job, wildly different jobs that only require 1 week training and you're good. As soon as the employee comes back? i'm gone. There's no jobs giving people like me full-time yearly contracts or something like that. So I applied to get whatever many work formations I can so my resume will look prettier and i have a better chance of being hired. I am studying (paid by the gov, but it's half of part-time wage) to become a Health Technician (cuz that's what they need now) and a Sociocultural Animator (people that stay at festivals and fairs and stuff). I know full well that even if i get a job i won't be able to afford a house. I am working to get the best job i can possibly get in my condition ans yet i get demotivated and called lazy every single day. it feels dehumanising, makes it seem like it's somehow my fault that the previous Generations (I'm a Gen Z) fucked the market so bad that i can barely afford rent (yes i pay a very small rent) in my own childhood home. so the lady made me feel better, thank you

Listening to the mom at the end fills me with sadness. She understands something's happening. A lot of older people doubt us when we tell them we are struggling, tell us we're entitled or overreacting, but we're not. I just got done with a conversation with my manager about my pay. I'm getting 13 an hour, which was the pay i got when i started working there over half a year ago as a cashier. They've since promoted me to the customer service desk (which involves more responsibilty, power, duties, and stress) and haven't changed my pay. He said it was because I need to finish training before they consider the title official, and to not "let others discourage me from progressing" (because he figured our I've been asking other coworkers about their experience and what they thought about my pay rate). He did not like that, i felt. So i have to wait several months before seeing... what... a measly dollar increase? By the way he worded it? Waiting roughly 6 more months for that? I live in and pay rent for my apartment and pay for my college tuition, pay for my groceries and school supplies... 13 an hour is absolutely exploitative. That's being gracious with me not bringing up the fact that they keep overscheduling me. I don't care if it's "within the bracket" or if i haven't been fully trained. If they like me as much as they say, they can afford to pay me properly. Not make me wait a year while I do the extra work for them now. Ugh... even confronting him didn’t change anything... I feel like there's no point in trying. Why do we have to become vicious about it just to make companies pay us like the living human beings we are?

With that last video, I definitely felt it. My boyfriend and I have been looking for a house for a little over a year, and the prices were so over the top that we couldn't even get a foot in the door. There were a couple of times that we made offers on houses that were actually decent and within our range at the time, but we were always outbid by other people that had better credit and more money towards the down-payment. (There were also a ton of houses that we looked at where they were DEFINITELY NOT worth the amount that the owner was asking for and were absolute garbage.. these particular houses probably would have been cheaper just to tear them down and build up again from scratch.) Regardless, we kept looking, and I'm proud to say that we were finally able to buy a house! We closed on it near the end of 2022, and we have a mortgage that is about the same as paying rent around here. It's crazy to think that buying a house would be cheaper than renting in the long run and I can't say it is easier since not everyone can get a good enough credit score for a mortgage loan. We had a lot of work to do on this place and still have some work to do, but eventually, when the time comes to refinance, we'll get a lower rate and have some added equity when we eventually decide to resell😊✨️

There's also a reduced price for e.g. meats that are near but not past their expiration date. During daytime it's -30% of the original price on the products, but in the evening when the store is about to close, the reduced amount rises to 60%. Many people are super tactical about this and only go shopping late at night to get that sweet -60% on e.g. porkchops or chicken.

21:50 I used to work at a Walmart in the next city over from me, one winter, we had a blizzard so bad, that the 4 lane highway was closed, and the only other way in was "travel not advised" (meaning no snow plows were out, and tow trucks would not come to pull you out of a ditch, you're on your own) I got reprimanded the next day by the store manager, it was then that I decided to find a different job. There was later a class action lawsuit against him specifically for being hostile to employees. I got a free $50 out of it.

You know, I had so many issues with getting a job right after high school that I joined a program that put me into many unpaid internships with some higher up following me to add notes to my file. Guess what, despite being a librarian, a custodian, a hardware store worker, a gardener (I am mildly allergic to pollen), a painter, and a daycare worker all while taking college, people still don't want me! Bruh.

33:39 That woman is right! I went apartment hunting with my parents for my own place, looked for MONTHS since we have to be out of the place we're staying soon. Most of these places are $1300-$1800 in New Jersey. For 1 bedrooms AND studios, can't afford it. I tried getting my brothers best friend to find a place with me (he was having issues with the place he's currently at), radio silence. I now have to move with my parents to their place in Florida. I honestly was looking at apartments near their area for shits & giggles... it's the same!!

I was once in a workplace that was so toxic that the stress from it gave me a migraine so bad that I was physically unable to stand for more than five minutes at a time. Took almost a week to recover. It was the last straw for me and the only time I ever quit a job without another lined up

I worked at a bigger chain bakery and cafe place in their flagship store so we had to keep the displays relatively full until the evening. As a result we had the most food waste out of all the stores. But we were forbidden to take the food that would be thrown away and on our paperwork it said it would be considered as theft. They said they couldn't handle it differently for tax reasons?! One day we threw away over 300€ worth of baked goods including over 60 jam filled doughnuts 😢

I love the mom at the end being genuinely concerned for her son and those of us around his age trying to survive. My husband and I just bought a house a few months ago and when his coworkers hear that we bought a house and hes not making me work they're shocked. But we've done the math. Even if I worked, we'd have to send our 1 year old to daycare and I wouldnt make more than daycare would cost us. How do we survive on one person's salary especially one thats factory work? I dont have any idea, very carefully I guess. And we tend not to be able to save any money. I just hope the housing and food costs get better for everyone. Not to mention the whole job market and sucky pay thing. :/

Tbh, factory work is perhaps the best paying work out there that doesn’t require any sort of college education to get into, not to mention the benefits that full-time work with such companies can offer, assuming he’s working for the right sort of company (NOT AMAZON). I just started a job with Legget & Platt in the town where I live. They’re the biggest company that no one’s really heard of as they manufacture adjustable frames which go into all sorts of different applications. Ours is a new factory location which manufactures the power-adjustable bed frames for companies like Sealy and TempurPedic. As our plant is so new in the area, demand is HIGH for all sorts of positions, even leadership positions. We’ve only been in production for 2 1/2 weeks, the first half week being training for the only line currently in production, there will eventually be four assembly lines once it’s all said and done, along with our welding department which is also already in operation and a powder coat area which is just waiting to start-up. As of now, I am already in training for my Line Lead position which I will be taking on full-time once Line 2 starts up and we’re preparing our Zone 2 lead for HER Line Lead position once I’ve taken control of my line…and we’re both still working through a temp agency as is the majority of our current staff. Needless to say that we’ll both be going full-time very shortly. Once that happens, I’ll be looking at something around a $20/hr. wage, along with medical insurance, a 401K plan and earning a week’s paid vacation for every 90 days of employment with the company. Manufacturing is really the last decent job opportunity available here in the States for entry-level workers, so your husband is rather fortunate to have one himself as these jobs are also very difficult to find these days… Props to him and I wish you both the best going forward…👍🏻

@@jmurray1110 Well, here in Germany at least food prices already are getting down for a while (we measure them in store brand cucumber prices. Normal price was 2 years ago at 20 cents per cucumber, half a year ago they were at 1.30€ and have been dropping slowly but steadily to 55 cents this week now). Even the house market that has reached ridiculous amounts (by far not as bad as in the US, but worse than it has ever been) is now starting to slowly stagnate and in some areas decline. Those of us who have been looking for house prices - or rather property prices that are often 10 times higher - are actually expecting that bubble to explode within the next 2 years. We also hope that the newest property tax bill by our government (that allows the states to tax freely according to regional living standard costs) will also be canceled. In my area property is among the most expensive in the country, and i know an 80 year old retired man with a small house and a huge property that is not used in any way except for taking walks. He paid for the last 10 years around 400 € tax per year for it. He got a letter from the city council that informs him that he now has to pay 14k (!) every year. His retirement income is lower than 14k! He inherited the property from his parents (who got it after ww2 by a redistribution of property directed by the US government) and had barely enough income to build a 200m² house on it.

@@christopheralthouse6378I will add utility work being another good paying (and in some cases) pension jobs with minimum training. I've seen people in their early 20s start as field workers. As they progress with their career, they get more company paid training. I can't imagine how teachers and parents don't teach the next gen about trade jobs.

Unfortunately, once inflation hits and companies adjust to how much people are willing to pay for things, the prices don't go back down. The inflation rate going forward may grow at a slightly diminished rate, but that's probably the only relief we'll see barring a major event.

I work at the school I went to. That I graduated LAST YEAR. They pulled me into the job, didn't tell me it was supposed to be temporary (I was kept because apparently they didn't find someone to replace me), forced me to work fewer hours (which I could barely afford), are STILL paying me shit wages, gaslight me, lie to me, didn't provide support for my disability, and told me I could only keep the job until the end of the school year. I'm having trouble finding a new job because of my disability, and the people who are supposed to be helping me, are giving me trust issues.

Problem with letting corporations buy homes to rent out is that they artificial increase the rent prices to make profit and if they don't rent for what they want, they can just write it off. Homeowners who rent their property, on the other hand, usually need that rent, so are more reasonable and stable.

That mom towards the end was so much better than so many parents these days... rather than telling him to suck it up and deal with a crap apartment while he tries to get ahead, like so many of my friends' parents (I was kicked out for not sharing my parents' faith, so that's a different animal altogether). Seeing a mom care more about her child's well-being shouldn't be so refreshing, but it is...

I worked for a hospitality industry company for six months. At interview, I asked for $16/ hr. For what I knew how to do, it wasn't a bad deal. He offered me $15/ hr starting out and said that when he saw what I could do, he would up it. Eventually it came down to me doing both laundry and breakfast simultaneously and I was there way later than anyone else. Sometimes I didn't leave until 5 or 6 that night, while everyone else left at roughly 2 or 3. Everyone else was actually paid more than I was, as well, with more consistent start times. Worst part, I got a pay raise of .50 after 90 days because it was mandatory. First week I started, told them I would not work a specific day due to it being my anniversary. The day after I got hired, I got asked by 3 different people if I can work it. I left after six months. Paid more, better benefits, start times are generally the same.

The guy pulling the bread out of the trash reminds me of when I was 14 working at McDonald's, breakfast service was over and they were about to throw a literal trash bag full of bagels in the garbage. I asked if I could just take it home instead, since my single mom struggled with money sometimes (which was why I was working almost fulltime at 14). They let me, but warned me that it wasn't normally allowed and if I tried to "steal food" I'd get written up (since asking permission is definitely stealing). Next time I came in, i found I had been written up anyway 😂 ah, capitalism.

McDonald's where I worked will not let employees eat or take home food that goes unsold, and any food that has prep errors also have to be thrown away, in the garbage in the kitchen in full view of management. (Say, a cook forgot to add cheese, or condiment on a special order) Our manager told us this was to discourage the "young staff" from deliberately making food wrong or making too much, in order to "score" free food. Swing manager had a "pusher stick" which was metal and had a flat head to squish all the food in the waste can into a disgusting mess before taking to dumpster, so no one could salvage an actual meal.

It's a common rule on all McDonalds unless local law says otherwise They usually say it is to "stop bums from piling outside their business", which is clearly BS because of what you just described AND because they don't donate left-over food either

In the scenario with the employee picking bread from the trash I'd say the best way to handle it would be to give staff a chance to take things before it's thrown out. If fearing what people would think truly is the reason, as opposed to the fact that the employee got some free food, that would take care of all of that.

At one point I shifted from one pack house to another and was asked the reason, its a full hour closer so I save 2 hours in travel time in a day. She told me that she travels 2 hours to be there in the morning and I so wanted to ask "do you make minimum wage with 0 benefits too?". Like seriously some of these higher ups are completely disconnected from the average worker even when their whole job is to hire new people. edit: spelling.
