Video Summary:
Preventing unnecessary clot formation at normal healthy vasculature is function of endothelial cell lining of the blood vessel, endogenous antiplatelet factors and endogenous anticoagulant factors. Endothelial cells have negative charge which repels platelets and prevents platelet adhesion. They separate tissue factor (factor III) from factor VII present in blood. Also, they are source of NO and PGI2 and many anticoagulant factors. In antiplatelet squad we have NO and PGI2. They inhibit platelets. Now the anticoagulant factors. Antithrombin III inhibit thrombin, factor Xa and also factor IXa, XIa and XIIa. Heparan sulphate and heparin have no intrinsic anticoagulant activity. However, they potentiate antithrombin III. Thrombomodulin complexes with thrombin and thereby removes it from circulation. Also, it alters the behaviour of thrombin which then activates an anticoagulant, protein C. Protein C inactivates factor Va and VIIIa. Protein S serves as cofactor for protein C. Tissue factor pathway inhibitor first inhibits factor Xa, and then factor VIIa. Fibrin absorbs thrombin and prevents it from spreading into the circulation.

Thank you for this information. I have antithrombin 3 and was wondering if it would be safe to take vitamin K2 ( history if kidney stone and osteoporosis). I know vitamin K1 is responsible for clotting but not sure about vitamin K 2. Thank you for your response.

Physiology by Boron and Baulpaep, Bern and Levy, Gayton and hall etc are the books that I refer. I also refer other books from time to time but these are referred almost always. For this video I referred Pharmacology by Goodman and Gillman also. I hope it helps.😊
