Fun fact: Someone was bragging about his new Phone being able to record while my 80D was only doing 1080p. We were shooting the same stuff with my Phone (also Xperia Z3 at 4K), his iPhone and the 80D. Both phones were overheating after some Minutes and when it came to comparing the footage, the 80D was crushing both phones.

Unbiased or just someone who is actually speaking sense image quality and useability does really matter, and so does bitrate. 100Mbits is just not useable, The Osma Action and even the GoPro Hero 7 have the same bitrate as the Sony A7iii in 4K and even more in 1080p which is ridiculous

@@dpenn555 im not a sony fanboy whatsoever, but their 4k looks gorgeous... the bitrate doesnt mean much at all, if so you should only buy the gh5 and the xt3 since they offer you 400 mbit... but really dont see much differenc between 100 and 400 in a normal day usage.. but what you will see is the huge file sizes that come with higher bitrates... and IMO, a maybe 3% quality improvment isnt worth it for 3* the storage...

Thanks for sharing Matti! I'm still team Sony with the A7III, the value seems so much better and bitrate is one of the big reasons (not to mention the dual SD card, IBIS, 120) 100MB looks just as good to me compressed on KZbin as 400mb on Canon, except I get to save money on storage and shoot literally 4x more footage. That with the 24mm 1.4 G Master, EOSHD Canon Lut profile (gives me those sweet canon colors) and it's a dream team light camera set up, super run n' gun. Canon is dope too though!

@AlexVargassAlaska I mainly use it for photography. Switched from the 6dii and 5diii, and picture quality is definitely much better. Low light performance is insane. The electronic view finder makes taking pictures so easy that I rarely even use the light meter anymore cuz i already know what the final picture is gonna look like.

That ring is very helpful if you are shooting at M. I kind of hate that it is placed at the front of the ring and not close to the body.

@@GeneralLack the ring is right next to the body if you're using the adapter with ef lenses. And yes they should've put it there for their RF lenses as well. I found it extremely useful setting that to aperture, felt like I was manually opening the aperture blades, soo nice.

except bitrate isn't everything, a bitrate should always be considered in light of the codec used. 400mbps MJPEG !== 400mpbs H.265. Also, chroma subsampling and bit depth has a LOT to do with it as well, and it's not like the EOS R shines in those areas either.

I'm sure he gets a lot of free cameras; if he decides this one is the best it's unbiased. And I know this for a fact since I've had every modern camera (except Fuji) and I agree with him completely! Canon R is the most practical camera out there. Doesn't have the best specs but has the best usability compared to others. GH5 is next but suffers from AF in video. Sony A7iii is a close next. Also depends if you're only behind the camera or occasionally in front of the camera. So, usability factors vary based on use type!

@@chuck90504 It's not that they don't have real world uses, it's that they aren't geared towards this type of solo-shooter, spur-of-the-moment content. A Black Magic is worlds ahead of these cameras in its price range, but you're not going to go out and shoot a vlog on it practically. You're not going to be able to flip through all those settings to get the exposure and composition right for the nice car that just turned the corner at you and you're panicking trying to quickly record it. You're just going to miss the shot most likely. In the same way, I wouldn't count on a GH5's autofocus to film a person riding a skateboard. And I wouldn't count on a Sony battery to get me through a day at the beach. Canon just feels "right" when you're out and about doing things like that, and the colors are closer to the final product than all of the competitors making color grading a small task.

I am having thoughts about getting this camera for last 2 months or so since I started having quite big issues with my eye and cannot really use viewfinder anymore. 5D mark III which I use for weddings just doesn't offer that great display and fast response... touch focus and all that. I am really considering the R to replace my big DSLR. I wouldn't have to look through viewfinder anymore which damages my right eye so much. Thanks so much for making this.... really helpful. I will have to borrow it for few days to see how I like it before I make the final decision... awesome video as all your videos.. :)

When you file your taxes do you need to pay taxes on the free camera you received? If you said no you might want to find a new accountant since if you are ever audited CRA will be making you pay taxes. If the tax man is saying you owe taxes you are sponsored. You got paid. Also for bit rate you sorta got that wrong too. Canon's log is just a bunch of jpegs put together as a movie. Take a look at blackmagic raw that just came out and what is possible with that. Having a high bit rate is good if the file is still efficient.

A lot of the comments are missing the point. This video is about the "most underrated" camera, not the best. The EOS R is not trash. Do the specs match the A7III? No. Does it shoot full-frame 4K? No. Is the 1080P quality good? Yes. How's the AF? Great. Still image quality? Superb. Is it easy to use, comfortable in the hand, with a full-function touch flip screen and a menu system that's easy to search? Yes. I'd have bought one instead of a 5DM4 if it were available at the time, especially at the current $1999 price.

You are right - specs are not everythink ... and you even cannot compare bitrates (I have a Canon XC10 somewhere around here which has 305 mbits/snd ... still not better than 100 in a Sony 7R3 ;). And I would love to love the R ... but Crop, no IBIS and no 120fps - so it's nothing for me. And yes - of course I tried it. So I sort of left Canon after more than 30 yrs. I use several cameras, but Canon any more ... And your question: Most underrated camera in 2019: BMPCC4K - you didn't even test it ;) Bist mistake ;)

I've used that bitrate/upscale technique for a little while now. Even the 80D records at a whopping 90Mbps in 1080p...KZbin's 4k export bitrate (preset) within premiere is only 40Mbps so I'm still not capping the capability of the footage. Plus KZbin does less compression overall when ingesting 4k so even people watching in 1080p will benefit from it.

In my opinion canon files are more efficient. Sony uses long gop codecs which are really hard for the editing software to handle. Yes, there are workarounds but ... in general he's right. (You can transcode sony files to a different codec or use proxy's - still time consuming). Canon kind of found the middle ground - files are not huge and they edit smoothly. Bit rates have a lot to do with colorcorr and grading. And more is better than less. But sony is NOT 5 times worse than canon! And using those assumptions: what if we compare canon to Black Magic Pocket?! ;)

@@DamianStefanov I did watch the Potato Jet & Armando video on a A73 R comparison. I did think the R 1080p was better than the A73. The highlight fall off was smoother. As for the 4K crop at the moment that would work in my favour as I shoot 1080p, the 35mm RF would crop to a 60mm - very handy. The 120 is a pain but not essential. I actually agree with him on the IS as I'm not that Impressed with what I've seen on the Z and A73. PS - I'm a Nikon shooter.

The EOS R actually DOES shoot 120fps at 1280x720... with some other limitations: no movie servo AF, no digital IS, and no audio. It’s not in the list of normal frame size/rate/compression - you have to enable “high frame rate movie” mode. So, the Sony A7iii does it with better specs (1920x1080 @ 100M or 60M) and with sound (if you’re not using their S&Q mode), but I didn’t realize the EOS R did 120 at all until I spent some time with the camera.

Go test out a Fuji xh1...I am happy with mine..got it for $900 new...lenses are half the price of the canon lenses. Ibis..great for video and even better for pictures. Fuji colors are as good as canon in my opinion and your money will buy you twice the products that canon will give you...xt3 and xt30 are great also...but no ibis on those only on the xh1.

Specs don't mean anything really. I'd say you need a solid couple of months with a camera to know if it's for you or not.

@@froznfire9531 I used to shoot 4K50p all the time with the GH5 but then realized I don't even slowmo that much. (I'm in Europe so I use PAL). Most clients still want only HD 1080P. If clients book 4K, then I don't shoot slowmo. If I really want 50fps, with sharp L primes I can upscale some shots from 1080p to 4K no problem. The HD 1080p footage from the R is very sharp. And because I don't have to manual focus anymore with the R, using a monopod & handheld I can now control 2 cameras at the same time to catch moments, which gives me more materials when I edit.I use IS Canon glasses for handheld shots.

Same here - I really don't know how much difference the bit rate makes to a file for post production just on its own because you also have to take into consideration the efficiency of the codec to.

Honestly, if $2K is my budget, A7iii over EOSR. I've tested both at the store, A7iii is superior and not to mention that the price with kit len is under $2K and EOSR body only with that price.

The EOS R has exploded in popularity it seems over the last few months! I think people will almost always choose less features, but easy to use over fully featured, but bigger and complicated. (Except when it's for commercial projects)

I just wish they pay as big here in the Philippines. 15,000 pesos which is equivalent to around $300 US is the range of pay for professional shoots here... And it is already very expensive for a lot of Filipinos. 😭 Which means you'll have to decrease your rate to about 7000 pesos ($140) just to get clients 😭 I want to buy those professional gears someday... I just hope I can do that through working as a filmmaker here in my country...

I get you man. Filipino filmmaker here from Cebu. We use gh5's for our commercial productions. Idealy we would like to use the c200 or black magic Ursa mini but the gh5 is worth it so much. The 4k 10bit 422 all-i is the best image quality we've seen. Sony, canon, and Nikon just couldn't compare. Commercials, weddings, debuts or whatever. Just keep grinding dude. You'll get there.

I bought eos R as second body to my DX II instead of old 6D. After 2 weeks I sold DX and bought second R. Specs aren t everything. Sure, something could be better, but I really love that camera. Last week I finally bought 28-70/2 and it is the beast for wedding photographer. During short ceremony - 2x eos R - one with 28-70/2 and second with 85/1,4 and you can basicly shoot everything without changing lenses. Love it! :)

It has the same price as the sony a7iii that compares with the 1dxii... It doesn't even have 120fps or even 4k 60. Right now, without a adaptor, it can genuinely fit only 4 lenses that are extremely overpriced and doesn't even have a battery grip available. Last but not least, the build in image stabilisation is straight up bad and picture quality is just not special. I am a canon fan but this is definitely not the most underrated camera of 2019

I can't agree on that. The adaptor is included giving you access to all EF lenses. Not having IBIS is not good though. But atleast there will be the full range of IS-Lenses soon. How could the image be special? The colors and white-balance is great. There is a battery grip, I got it a few weeks ago.

I dont know if McDonalds still gives their workers a free meal per shift but that would most likely be factored into their pay and it would be a non taxable benefit (taxes are still paid just not by the employee).

What is stopping someone from not accepting cash for anything and only accepting "gifts". He makes a video and as a thank you the company gives him something. I love this camera. Pre-ordered it when it was announced and I have been so happy with that decision. I've held off on the ND filter insert though. I really like the control ring set to ISO and I plan on getting some more RF lenses so I don't know if I'll invest in the ND adapter. That RF24-70 f2.8 IS is coming maybe as soon as July 😍
