A more semantically accurate translation of "Huong" in Huong River is "Aroma," not Perfume, nor Fragrance. Someone who didn't know English/French well translated as such, and the error stuck since then.

It might be semantically accurate but it's called the Perfume River by everyone, including official Vietnamese sources.

@@aussiegooner that's what I said, the error started back in the early 20th century. It was incorrectly translated as "Riviere du Parfum" in French, which then became "Perfume" in English, and the error has persisted since then.

Hue is a demonstration of how bad the Nguyen Dynasty was. They picked among the worst locations in Vietnam for their capital, out of spite of Thang Long (now Ha Noi) which was Vietnam's largest city and center of economics and intellect in the late 18th -early 19th century. Nguyen's first Emperor, Gia Long, said that Ha Noi's people were still loyal to Le Dynasty, and were contemptuous of him, and he hated them. Hue was not even a good location in Central Vietnam. A much better location nearby is Da Nang, which has steadily grown into a much larger and better-developed city than Hue. My family is from Hue.
