Or you could just upcast counterspell by using a higher level spell slot, only use one spell slot instead of two and get a guaranteed success as well. And then also instead use that 8th level spell slot on something like Dominate Monster. There is a reason most people don't think Glibness when they think 8th level spells. It stinks. There is a reason it used to be a 3rd level spell back in 3.5, and it was arguably better.

I think the most underrated level 2 spell is gift of gab. In the same vein as this tbh, but super op. Gift of gab basically makes everyone within 5 ft of you forgets what you just said. It’s literally gaslighting the spell.

This spell is REALLY good for a villain that wants to frame your party for a crime, or infiltrate a meeting. I love using this with antagonists since it gives a reason to how they crashed the party or eavesdropped on a meeting.

Can't personally say I know too many DMs that would allow this if given any amount of time to think about it (in other words, they might allow it if put on the spot in a session).

@@AlphaOmega1237 It's arguably also not that great of a spell outside of it's ability to fool truth enforcing spells as it sort of ends up being a "win more" for things like Counterspell and Dispel Magic when you can cast 8th level spells. Hell, it's arguably the worst spell to pick for a Warlock as they quite literally get to pick *one single* 8th-level spell. And that's the only one they get to use for the rest of their lives. And for a Bard? Jack of All Trades apply to spell checks so why bother picking up Glibness. Also, you could just upcast your Counterspell. Like, if you need to Counterspell that Disintegrate that badly, just upcast it rather than using two spell slots. Just saying, there is a reason it used to be a 3rd level spell. And it was arguably better back then.

If it was only intended to be used for *social* charisma checks the spell could just specify/limit use to those. Just because it doesn't explicitly say it's only meant for social encounters doesn't mean that you can just use it to be a God of Anti-Magic. Seriously, it doesn't have this effect for the other two casting abilities and there's no similar spells that give those abilities this effect. That very heavily implies that this is an edge case that wasn't thought about rather than a legitimate effect of the spell.

@@Rodoet001 I never said that the spell was great in the first place. However, you're examples for why aren't great. Warlocks shouldn't be the one's trying to counterspell (or use reaction spells) in the first place unless absolutely necessary given their extremely limited number of spells known and pact slots. Bards have more than enough uses of counterspell to make effective use of the spell without Glibness's "auto-success" effect to trivialize enemy spellcasters. This is even something you pointed out despite the fact that it really doesn't help your point which seems to be that this effect should be allowed because otherwise the spell isn't very useful. As for the merits of the spell, while it may be a bit over leveled, I think you're ignoring the massive benefits of having a spell that basically makes you auto-succeed on social encounters, especially for the Warlock. Depending on your DM, this grants the ability to potentially talk your way past entire encounters. Even if you say something stupid that would normally cause you to fail the social encounter, this spell arguably guarantees that it's negative impact will at least be mitigated. As for bards, it's effect is pretty negligible on bards that have used their expertise on charisma skills, but otherwise it's still just as strong for them as warlocks. Arguably, you could use Glibness as an excuse to choose other skills that it doesn't have an effect on for your expertise. Jack of all trades on its own pales in comparison to Glibness. It's only a +3 bonus by that point compared to a guaranteed 15 on the d20 plus all normal bonuses.

@@areynor_emblem4635 But there is so much better spells for a Warlock, even a Hexblade, at 8th level. It's at best good for one fight, maybe two, it's not a guaranteed success to hit, if you need a 15 to hit, you would probably hit it at 10 at the very least or not even your spells would be able to land consistently before level 15. And look at the spells it has to compete with! Power Word: Stun let's you incapacitate anything with 150 hp or less, and at that level it's still a decent amount that falls under that category, meaning free and guaranteed advantage on your attacks, Dominate Monster is amazing, and Feeblemind can literally break encounters. Glibness is a "win more" spell, and not a very good one. If you need Glibness to consistently hit as a Hexblade, you need to either rethink your strategy, recheck your stat distribution, or get new dice.

My favourite 8th level spell is actually Maze. No save to send something away, and since most players dump intelligence, their intelligence modifier is too low to pass the check to come back on thier own, requiring something to break concentration. This also works on monsters since INT is very commonly dropped for monsters even at high levels.

you guys dont understand, you cast glibness, it lasts an hour and for one combat (possibly more) every counterspell check is going to roll 15-20, you can add your charisma modifier (should be capped at 20 by 15th level so +5) making the roll a 20-25 and bards can add half proficiency (at 15 prof is 5) so +2 to the check so you have a minimum roll of 22 as a bard and a roll of 19 will counter a ninth level spell so you can counter every single powerful spell using counterspell, you and your allies just need to trigger the spellcasters reaction before your turn so they cant counterspell you back

Want something better? Be a 12th level character, 10 levels in Wizard and 2 levels in Stars druid. Now you can't roll bellow 10 when you counterspell, and since you will have a +9 (20 int + 4 prof. Bonus) that means you can counterspell anything your enemies throw at you.

So as a Bars with Expertise this is not really necessary (depending on the subclass). I made a Bard ones that could not rolle lower than 16 in persuasion at lv5. And roiled as written I believe there to be a different between skill checks, ability checks and saving throws. So keep that in mind.
