@@BertoxolusThePuzzled Alright, so let's just assume that a single meteor from the meteor swarm spell is the equivilant of a Tsar Bomb. This is the single largest nuclear weapon ever detonated with an explosive power of 58 megatons. This is 2.4 x 10^17 joules. A 5e meteor swarm deals 20d6 fire damage and 20d6 bludgeoning damage. So a total of 40d6 damage. Divide to show that 1d6 damage is equal to 6.1x10^15 joules, or just under one and a half megatons. So then, the sun emits 3.846x10^26 joules per second. This means that exposure to a full nicoll dyson beam, assuming perfect mirrors, inflicts 63,386,897,404d6 every second. However, a round is six seconds, so it is actually 380,321,384,425d6 per round. But let's assume this is a dexterity saving throw to take half damage. To ensure that a 20th level monk with the mobile feat is unable to escape the beam and thus lose his evasion, it must be at least 200 feet wide. Thus, the energy of the beam per square foot is 1/200^2 the energy of the entire beam, and I would consider a human standing upright to have a cross-section from the top of around 1/2 of a square foot. Thus, the monk would take 4,754,017d6 points of damage per round.

Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Lord Karsus the Archwizard? I thought not. It's not a story the Clerics would tell you. It's an Arcanist legend. Karsus was a Lord of Netheril, so powerful and so wise he could use the Weave to control the gods... He had such a knowledge of the arcane arts that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The necromantic side of the Weave is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his war-ravaged homeland, which eventually, of course, he did. He created the first and only twelfth level spell. Unfortunately, when he cast it he made the only possible wrong choice and supplanted the goddess of magic, temporarily ending all magic in the world and causing his homeland to fall from the sky. It's ironic, he destroyed his entire civilization in his attempt to save it.
@scottclowe5 жыл бұрын
@arnold jayeola Me neither. But I left it in from the original text anyway. I would imagine an arcanist saying this to a young acolyte would not be an impartial speaker. For instance, we should not think Darth Plagueis was wise merely because Palpatine made such a claim to Anakin.

So if Karsus had been wiser and chose a different god to mantle (perhaps even a god of the enemy such as Gruumsh), this would never have happened? I'd always thought that he was simply overwhelmed by the power of the goddess, but the fact that Netheril's fall hinged on such a human mistake makes it all the more tragic.
@alphapolimeris5 жыл бұрын
There is no telling what would have happened, but from what we know, choosing another god MIGHT have worked. I mean, other stuff could have gone wrong. But it seems the problem was that his actions made magic disappear entirely, which both messed up the floating city AND his own ability to retain the power of a god. Though to be honest, the disappearance of magic (even for less than a minute) should have left other massive impacts on the world. Probably killing a good chunk of magical creatures and undeads, collapsing planes, etc. Then again, magic is weird. I guess he only disrupted weave based magic and not shadow magic or other supernatural forces. Some things are better not be investigated too much, if you want things to make some sense. Anyway, some plotholes don't make the story less enjoyable :)

The thing is, I dont think its that he picked the wrong god, its that he didnt understand the true work of the gods. He picked the god of magic, who subconsciously fixed magic, and thus magic stopped. What if he had chosen a life/death god? Would he accidentally have killed all life, or raised all dead as an unfathomable undead horde? If he picked one of the gods in the blood war, would he have accidentally unleashed demons and devils on the material plane? To me, the folly here isnt that he chose the wrong god, its that he chose ANY god.
@Nyghtking5 жыл бұрын
@@JKSSubstandard I mean even the weakest god if summoned to the material plain would probably been able to win the war, so picking even the weakest god to mantle so as to funnel their full power would have done it. @@alphapolimeris that is...kinda explained? God's are omnipresent and eternal. To the point that when a new god emerges and forms a domain, he retroactively emerges throughout all of history (i think there was some ocean or water based god as example). So even if Mystral ceased to exist for a minute, the emergence of Mystra retroactively connects to the exact point where the domain of magic went vacant. So magic existed, it just was very fucky for a bit. Especially since she took a while to fix the damage that had already been done. DnD gods just have a different way of existing and traversing time i guess. I guess it's the bit about empty domains fundamentally requiring a divine to rule over them, even if they have to draw them from the future or something stupid like that.

Well see, wish can only reliably duplicate 8th level or lower spells. My guess is that wish is a reward from Mystra to the best spell casters who reached that level. Allowing them, using a strong spell, to go beyond the confines of their own spell books and even their own minds, even if only for a brief moment. But if they use this spell to do more, since it does allow a lot of creative use, there is a strong chance they won't be able to cast it ever again. Not to mention, it basically brings them as close to death as a lvl 17+ PC can ever get. To me, this seems like the Wish spell is a gift, but also a back door into the weave that can be abused, and your abuse has a chance to alert Mystra to your tomfoolery. If she does then you are no longer permitted to use that spell, or worse.

It should stop at 13th level. If 12th level allows the complete supplantation of a god, a spell pushing the limits of this tier would possibly allow for the supplantation of an pantheon or several, and like the only known 12th level spell ever cast (to our knowledge), this would mean you'd be able to alter the fabric of and very existence of all that is and isn't within the spheres, and all universes contained therein the sphere or spheres in question. A spell breaking even this boundary would likely allow you to bend even the ethereal fluid outside the spheres to your will, dwarfing anything any being within the -known- multiverse could comprehend. You'd likely be a rival to some the greatest of Eldritch beings and unknowable monstrosities beyond known existence. The only thing more powerful than that would likely be simply becoming an omnipresent Gary Gigax and retconning DnD out of existence.

I seem to recall reading somewhere, that the Magister and Mystra's Chosen are exceptions to the ban on level 10+ spells. If they were to cast one however, the spell would go into effect, but they would immediately forfeit their lives, and instantly get put on trial to defend the spell's use, to decide if the use was justified. I'd like to point out that Karsus does in fact still exist on the Material Plane. According to Powers and Pantheons, where I imagine much of this information was pulled, the body of Karsus exists in the southern High Forest, just south of the Heartblood River, as a tall butte of red stone that radiates powerful chaotic magic; it is from this stone which much of the Dire Wood forest was created, and also from this stone where the eponymous name of the Heartblood River comes from, as the same liquid that pours from the stone when Karsus 'speaks' flows into the river. There is also a statue made of the stone at the temple built upon this butte of stone depicting Karsus, which is also a stone golem that contains part of his essence. Other parts of his essence were split by a Lich named Wulgreth, but there's little written what happened to these after Wulgreth was slain. Anyways, that's my two cents.

Johny Broxy He said that it was a “vestige”, but never specified where it is. Makes it seem like he fell and never hit the ground or transcended planes. Also, even based on his statements, Karsus’s soul isn’t gone; it never transcended planes. That’s part of his punishment; Powers and Pantheons specifies that Karsus is trapped in the red rock, doomed to suffer for eternity for his mistake in his “godly” capacity. His soul is incomplete at this moment because it has been separated by several forces and the gods, as I mentioned earlier.

@@r.r815 First off, it doesn't matter what the Gods can do, because the DM is the one who defines their powers. If the DM says she missed one, then she missed one. There's no ifs ands or buts about it. Secondly, an Avatar of Mistra would make sense, but Idk why she would bother doing that, also, that doesnt sound like the kinda storyline op is going for. What would work though, is if they ended up being the Reincarnation of Karsis. In his last moments, he was still tied to her just long enough to protect himself and cast reincarnation, which may or may not be a spell in your universe. Could also be someone who has an item that was forged by a God which has antimagic properties, more specifically, it's anti magic, is specifically against, anti magic. Or it coudl be someone not from this universe. Or perhaps they aren't casting level 10 spells at all, but are actually simulating them, like an android from the future, back in time with heavy artillary, so powerful his blasts cause volcanos to erupt. When you're talking about god defying powers, its bound to get a little crazy. Could also just end up being a liar and he cant do level 10 spells at all. Was all a misunderstanding, if DM goes this route its because they dont want to actually upset the balance of things, but also, because a lot of Legends and myths are actually just over exaggerated. Take for example the Kraken, or the Loch Nes monster.

@MythosTheSophist3 жыл бұрын
The problem is that it seems to be way beyond what it can do. Wish functions normally for duplicating spells of lower level than cast, everything else requires more magic which is taken directly from the caster, imposing physical penalties. Replicating a 9th level spell through 9th level casting would impose penalties, so casting anything higher could be way more catastrophic. Furthermore, Mystra can just say 'nah', but I assume we are going with a hypothetical in which she doesn't or simply cannot. In that case, the spell could backfire massively by, say, fusing them with the target God, adding a few wizard/sorcerer levels to them and modifying their personality. Epic way to derail a campaign, I'm definitely gonna use that. Now, what would probably require less magic than replacing a God is becoming one, so that's a bit more realistic. I would rule it that the spell would turn the caster into a quasideity, giving them a divine rank of 0. Lastly, whatever the case, the weave would be so torn from the stress of trying to replicate a spell of such magnitude with only a fraction of the energy necessary given by the caster, that it would just collapse around the area. It could just create zones of wild and/or dead magic, unleash magical calamities onto the plane, shake the borders between the planes and cause a mini Sundering etc. Everything would go to shits, so expect every Inevitable on Mechanus to pay a visit. OK, now I've got a campaign to write

Chichaetomate if you are capable of dying within a certain time frame and hold no infinite power over the laws of anyone of the laws/powers in the world. Hence immortal or a god. A golem is as mortal as you want it to be... but if it can stay operational till the end of time then it can be considered immortal. A ghost is a apart of the undead and therefore belongs to the cycle of life and death. It is not considered mortal because it is not alive anymore. Same thing with the golem now that I mention it. Unless it was able to give birth to a soul or harbor one. It is not considered “alive”. But these are just my interpretation and opinion. Zaifir You can do a wish circle; in which everyone on the outside powers the center caster’s wish with a wish of their own. The center caster then carefully states “I wish to cast the 10th level spell ______”

15:42 - That is not what a great old one is. Great old ones are inspired by Cthulu lore. You're making a pact with a powerful entity from the far realms of the planes where aberrations like illithids and aboleths come from.

The enclave sort of reminds me of magnoshadt in Magi: the labrynth of magic. How everyone in that country are sort of set in a caste system based on the level of magical ability they have, while the lowest caste live underground and have their lifeforce drained by the upper classes of magicians in order to fuel the countries magic technologies. its fucked, but they are levied from paying taxes, they have free food, free medicare, and basically free booze, so they dont complain. That arc was a really good arc because it pushed that boundaries of being morally right, and if i see a dm use that in a campaign i would be happy to play in it, especially if you are LG and you want to set these people free from the imprisonment they've grown accustomed to.

In the homebrew setting I made, it is still possible for people who reach epic levels to cast spells at 10th, 11th, and 12th level. However, while this does allow someone to freely upcast other spells, they are limited in how they can cast spells of that actual level. If someone tries to cast a 10th level or higher spell more than once per year, the god of magic would completely cut off that person from ever being able to use magic again. And, if someone does eventually learn how to cast 12th level magic, then this setting’s equivalent of Ao will confront that individual, and either destroy them on the spot, or force them into becoming a Deity.

I would love to see the video where you talk about the work around on how to cast these high level spells, also you should do the Spelljammer Video! and yes finish the Hag series, you also stopped the Giant series where you talked about each individual Giant Race (you've done, Ettin, Firbolg, Hill so far)

One last thing, for my fellow exploiters in 5e, according to the cannon of forgotten realms, Mysta made it so that "no mortal could cast spells higher than 9th level". "no mortal" ....... what if you make your character immortal? >:) assuming you somehow do so and your DM doesn't smite you, you can legally cast spells higher than 9th lvl. I mean it is what cannon says(by not mentioning it). You will need alot of wish spells though.

Actually just had a conversation about "how old is the idea of a floating city" just a couple days ago. I remembered it from Chrono Trigger but it wasn't original then. Oldest I can say for sure is Jack and the Bean Stalk. But giants in the clouds is probably pulled from some ancient mythology.
