I think I see how that lure was intended to be used...clear water only, get a solid visual on the fish, cast lure right over on top of the fish, knock the fish unconscious either by direct strike or shockwaves resulting from the lure crashing into the water, grab your net and get your catch floating belly-up. Rinse and repeat. As a tip....on a spinning rod setup, no reason to open the bail to cast, just set your drag a few clicks away from its tightest setting, throw the lure and it'll cast plenty far just taking out your drag.

You could always run a screw into the bottom of the lead hole and leave the head sticking up from the bottom of the lead hole but below the surface of the lure so the lead can pour around the screw head and lock it in place. Great video as always and yeah, cut that thing up!!

Guess the Quality Control department was on break when that bait was made. You'd expect a company not to sell a $1,200 bait with such a sloppy glue job on the tail fin, then having it become dislodged as easy as it did because of that glue. Not sure I'd buy a lure from them even if I could afford to after seeing that.
@Lone_Star_Outdoors
@Lone_Star_Outdoors 2 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I was thinking, if I spent $1,200 on that bait I would have felt personally insulted, and sent it back the second I saw the first flaw. At that price point, you're not allowed to make mistakes. Especially mistakes that major.

Made my first bait following the tips you gave. It was too light in the body. I was trying to make a striper bait for casting from shore, but even with 4 holes in the body completely filled with lead shot i couldn’t get enough weight for a good cast. Can you make a striper stick bait video for your fans? We love ya man, keep sending us the gold.

@@9009matorres frankly, it all depends on the price what you pay for handmade stuff. You need to get what you pay for, 1200 for a lure with such easy to fix and in my eyes mistakes that should not even be there when its 120 bucks, is waaaay overpriced and you should and will be called out for that. Cut it in half and mount each half in a frame, then sell both to cover your costs after making a second video of the internals. As for the lead on your bait working its way out, try a small router bit in your holes to make an upside down mushroom shape for the lead. Very hard to do on the smaller stuff, but if anyone can, you can! All the best from New Zealand.

@@austinhensley6553 Yeah I think I misunderstood what the original poster was actually suggesting to do. Anyone know why the plugs are so keen to come out? Especially if sealed properly the way Nate does and we assume that expansion of the timber isn’t the only factor or do we think that water ingress IS the only factor? Given this wasn’t exactly a lure that saw heavy use it’s a pretty dramatic effect if I recall correctly

You could probably stop the lead plugs from slipping out if you drill the lead holes at an angle so they intersect and form a single cavity, Or maybe drill at multiple angles from the same hole to form a cavity larger than the opening.

It's probably not necessary for the smaller baits that I make but I always dovetail my lead in. Drill a hole, then carve the bottom out evenly so it can't fall out.

Do you think the lead poking through your bait is the wood swelling or shrinking with moisture gain or loss? I wonder if you had like kiln dried your wood pre or post carving if that would make a difference. Does it happen on the smaller baits too or just the XXL ones? @gman69455

Idea for keeping your lead from working its way out of your baits: As your drilling your hole(s) drill each hole a second time but at a slight angle using the same start point for your hole. This will create a wedge of lead that can’t work its way out. Smarter Not Harder

@@benson6553 This is a very old idea used for pouring and setting concrete pillars. It is commonly use in areas with high freeze and thaw occurrences, but they ‘bell’ the bottom of the hole. Well as of 12/17 you have 13,000 likes... And if I remember correctly when you made your version it was a challenge to make an even bigger lure then the mother chaser. So not only did you succeed. You also made a better bait that preformed better. Anyone can make a giant lure... but it takes a master bait maker to make a giant lure preform right.

Try adding a small screw to the bottom of your lead hole with the head of the screw only driven in halfway to the bottom of the hole. The head of the screw in the center of the lead hole will act as an anchor once the lead is poured around it. That will keep the lead from working its way out of the hole over time!
