It has a lot to do with the code of points changing. They adopted a new system of scoring and got rid of the original 1-10 point scale. They did this by making certain skills or apparatus have a max possibility score and then deduct from that max score as the gymnasts perform to give them a score at the end. So now harder moves and quicker connections and stuff became more important than the elegance and artistic look of things. It's more of a gamble now to do pretty moves because they won't always result in a higher score with the new code of points sadly

Right. Marta Karyoli also realized that creative/risky mounts were no longer worth the value and may actually lead to falls that will result in loss of medals under the code and the 3 up/3 count format also makes federations more risk-averse. Notice how we don't see a beam mount like 2008 Alicia Sacramone's beam mount from the U.S. anymore after she fell on it during the Beijing team finals. Also, the code itself undervalues many risky mounts. However, I also think whoever is dominating the sport also plays a part is going above what the code rewards and is asking for and that makes all other federations follow suit. The Soviets did not have to be creative, dynamic, risky in order to dominate gymnastics, but they did it any way which inspired other gymnasts to do the same. Same with the Chinese on bars and beam. I love the U.S. gymnasts themselves, but they play to the code more than trying to push the sport further, with some exceptions. This started with the Romanians under Belu and Bitang in the 1990s.

Strait up a lot of the new implementations of scoring was to keep the western world from getting stomped on by Russian and Asia. They started to deem things "to dangerous" as a weak reason and throttled the training regimes of a lot of athletes. It's sad to see the fall of gymnastics. It used to be beautiful when the top dogs were allowed to be top dogs. They dumbed down the sport.

In section 12.2 of the event code, it is specified: “The maximum 8 highest difficulties including the dismount are counted for DV [difficulty value].” Looks like this is why, in case anyone else was wondering. The point code doesn't specify that your mount has to have any particular level of difficulty, so if you do 8 skills that are harder than your mount then your mount effectively doesn't matter to your routine anymore. Since difficult mounts are hard to land, almost everyone just goes with a graceful-looking easy mount instead.

This is true, but then again, it is totally boring watching it. Give me Shushinova, Yurchenko, almost anyone from this era. You never knew what amazing stuff they would produce. I completely agree. I used to figure skate and the same has happened there. If you look back 30-40 years you had so much grace, beauty and style, now its about big jumps and spins. In both sports you see far fewer 'perfect' routines because the overall routine is now less important than the individual elements and athletes consider falls worth the risk to have the chance of big scores. Its a real shame.

Hi, a non-gymnast here. I was just wondering, why will there be deductions due to it being complicated? I thought the more difficult the routine, the more score?
@RondaBernstein
@RondaBernstein 3 жыл бұрын
@@shelialaw2113 You get deductions for lack of balance. The larger the balance correction, the more deductions, so, if you do a more difficult mount that is only worth slightly more than a less difficult one, but then have to struggle to stay on the beam, you score less than just doing the other mount in the first place. I don't know if that makes sense or not.
@london2757
@london2757 3 жыл бұрын
@@shelialaw2113 the more complicated or difficult a skill is, the more likely it is that you will mess up or fall. the whole point is for you to not do that, so a lot of coaches won’t let us be creative or have fun with our beam routines.
@shelialaw2113
@shelialaw2113 3 жыл бұрын
@@RondaBernstein ohhhh I understand it better now. So it’s not worth it to do a routine that has a similar score than a more complicated routine, especially risking deductions due to factors such as imbalance, etc.. so it’s more practical to create a routine that scores high score but easier and safer to execute.

Sigh. When did "feminist" become a negative term? Feminists want *equality*. It's not about women being better than men or men being better than women. Simple equality, that's all.
@lauren3355
@lauren3355 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, there are women who hate men. There are also men who hate women. But that's beside the point -- the specific term "feminism" and feminists came about not to take power away from men, but to push for women to have equal power as men. It's just depressing that such an important idea has been lost and replaced by "feminazi" and other derogatory terms. There are *always* going to be haters on both sides of any issue. I think this one is worth saving. Being a feminist is *not* being a sexist. The terms are incompatible... actually, to be honest, you yourself sound very sexist in your comment. That's not a good way to gain respect from women or from men.

@@amandahupman1645 Safer like how? Back in the day you had compulsories which meant that gymnasts had to have solid proficieny in the basics and a celing score system which meant that only so much difficulty was required. Now there is no compulsories (hence why even in an Olympic event final it is rare for all 8 gymnasts to stay on the beam) and with the open-ended scoring system it is just the cramming-in of trick after trick after trick in 90 seconds which has resulted in a wave of injuries.

I couldn't agree more. It has become a sport focused on how many flips and twists a gymnast can do before landing and less focused on the artistry, creativity, flexibility and grace of dance skills mixed with tumbling skills. And as for uneven bars that has become more like men's high bar, since they widen the distance between bars the transition skills between the two bars like gymnasts like Nadia and Olga and many others did just don't exist anymore. There's very little fluidity to the bar, beam and floor routines. They all look the same now

@@blueblue8650 I love her too but I agree to some extent. Simone is mostly power and has sacrificed a bit of artistry for harder tumbling passes (which I love to see too but I miss when she had more choreo like her Rio floor performance. The energy and charisma she had there was EVERYTHING but she's taken a lot of that out now which I can see why. Doing a dance routine AND a triple double + the other hard tumbles would tire her out). The only thing I think she still would have had a chance winning is vault, especially with the yurchenko double pike Edit: now that I think about it, she could still win since there were other powerful gymnasts at that time. Comparing today's gymnasts and older ones wouldn't work since gymnastics is very different now.

THIS is where the true beauty of artistic gymnastics lies, the perfection with which difficult elements are executed, the beauty lies on the alignment of their bodies and not the awkward prancing, back arching, and hand throwing around they do in an attempt to look "artistic". Nowadays female artistic gymnasts are mostly incredibly short and bulky, there's nothing pretty about them doing stupid hand movements in the middle of an awesome floor exercise.

You said women couldn't do these skills anymore because they were too busy being "whores, sexting, etc..." and I simply pointed out you were wrong, the female gymnasts are competing at some of the highest levels ever seen - the USA and other countries. The other competitors weren't "crappy" and it shows you know zilch about gymnastics. The USA team is that good, not other countries are bad. This is a video about gymnastics, you are injecting bizarre misogyny and political overtones into it for some reason. There are plenty of youtube videos you can spew all day about hating whores and the govt. to your hearts content. In fact, if you are that upset about, maybe get into therapy and then try to do something to improve the world rather than trashing women on youtube who have worked harder than you ever have to achieve true excellence.

RobJG1976 Take a seat. You've "watched" the Olympics since 1980 lol. We got an expert here folks. My grandfather has watched them since 1956, I'll let him know he's an expert now too. Your "daughters" weren't up on that medal stand kicking ass and taking names at the Olympics, not now, not in 1980. I'm sure their Dad's opinion thinking girls are nothing but a bunch of sexting whores has done loads for their self esteem. You can keep talking shit in KZbin comments and wallowing in your bitter life and the US women's gymnasts will keep winning medals and being excellent. No one cares what angry misogynists online think.

@@sarahberry6434 I totally agree. Biles would be a fish out of water competing against these gymnasts. Today it’s all about who can perform the most daring move/s irrespective of how elegant or satisfying the routine is to watch. I couldn’t care less how many times someone can spin on one leg on the beam. 😴

It’s so beautiful watching the elegance, beautiful lines and artistic creativity of gymnasts back in the day. A lot of them even rival rhythmic gymnasts in their flexibility.. now they can barely get into a full split in a leap 😩

UGH!!! The new gymnastics disgusts me....I've watched this several times and I miss the handstands, and the flexibility. You can't tell me tumbling on the beam isn't hard. They should change the name to technical gymnastics. It certainly isn't artistic anymore

+A Laly Flexability? That's almost all you see in some of the routines. I'm impressed by the sheer amount of pain that people are willing to expect of young girls to get to this point. All for a silly medal.

I enjoy both, but I agree with your name idea. The artistry has been gone for a while. But art is impossible to judge without bias. That killed artistic gymnastics (also, the forced labor of eight-year-old Chinese girls whose identifications claim they're 16). It's basically JUST compulsories now...insane, X-Games compulsories.
