It has a lot to do with the code of points changing. They adopted a new system of scoring and got rid of the original 1-10 point scale. They did this by making certain skills or apparatus have a max possibility score and then deduct from that max score as the gymnasts perform to give them a score at the end. So now harder moves and quicker connections and stuff became more important than the elegance and artistic look of things. It's more of a gamble now to do pretty moves because they won't always result in a higher score with the new code of points sadly
@vietgrlterifa18 жыл бұрын
Right. Marta Karyoli also realized that creative/risky mounts were no longer worth the value and may actually lead to falls that will result in loss of medals under the code and the 3 up/3 count format also makes federations more risk-averse. Notice how we don't see a beam mount like 2008 Alicia Sacramone's beam mount from the U.S. anymore after she fell on it during the Beijing team finals. Also, the code itself undervalues many risky mounts. However, I also think whoever is dominating the sport also plays a part is going above what the code rewards and is asking for and that makes all other federations follow suit. The Soviets did not have to be creative, dynamic, risky in order to dominate gymnastics, but they did it any way which inspired other gymnasts to do the same. Same with the Chinese on bars and beam. I love the U.S. gymnasts themselves, but they play to the code more than trying to push the sport further, with some exceptions. This started with the Romanians under Belu and Bitang in the 1990s.

Strait up a lot of the new implementations of scoring was to keep the western world from getting stomped on by Russian and Asia. They started to deem things "to dangerous" as a weak reason and throttled the training regimes of a lot of athletes. It's sad to see the fall of gymnastics. It used to be beautiful when the top dogs were allowed to be top dogs. They dumbed down the sport.

In section 12.2 of the event code, it is specified: “The maximum 8 highest difficulties including the dismount are counted for DV [difficulty value].” Looks like this is why, in case anyone else was wondering. The point code doesn't specify that your mount has to have any particular level of difficulty, so if you do 8 skills that are harder than your mount then your mount effectively doesn't matter to your routine anymore. Since difficult mounts are hard to land, almost everyone just goes with a graceful-looking easy mount instead.

@@shelialaw2113 You get deductions for lack of balance. @@RondaBernstein ohhhh I understand it better now. Back in the day you had compulsories which meant that gymnasts had to have solid proficieny in the basics and a celing score system which meant that only so much difficulty was required. Now there is no compulsories (hence why even in an Olympic event final it is rare for all 8 gymnasts to stay on the beam) and with the open-ended scoring system it is just the cramming-in of trick after trick after trick in 90 seconds which has resulted in a wave of injuries.

@gothgirl4evr8812 ай бұрын
I couldn't agree more. It has become a sport focused on how many flips and twists a gymnast can do before landing and less focused on the artistry, creativity, flexibility and grace of dance skills mixed with tumbling skills. And as for uneven bars that has become more like men's high bar, since they widen the distance between bars the transition skills between the two bars like gymnasts like Nadia and Olga and many others did just don't exist anymore. There's very little fluidity to the bar, beam and floor routines. They all look the same now

Simone is mostly power and has sacrificed a bit of artistry for harder tumbling passes (which I love to see too but I miss when she had more choreo like her Rio floor performance. The energy and charisma she had there was EVERYTHING but she's taken a lot of that out now which I can see why. Doing a dance routine AND a triple double + the other hard tumbles would tire her out). The only thing I think she still would have had a chance winning is vault, especially with the yurchenko double pike Edit: now that I think about it, she could still win since there were other powerful gymnasts at that time. Comparing today's gymnasts and older ones wouldn't work since gymnastics is very different now.

THIS is where the true beauty of artistic gymnastics lies, the perfection with which difficult elements are executed, the beauty lies on the alignment of their bodies and not the awkward prancing, back arching, and hand throwing around they do in an attempt to look "artistic". Nowadays female artistic gymnasts are mostly incredibly short and bulky, there's nothing pretty about them doing stupid hand movements in the middle of an awesome floor exercise.
@FokinRG8 жыл бұрын
+Cakiema Because unhealthy girls are definitely ready and physically able to perform at this level. Being short is good, but the elements look more impressive when a tall gymnast performs them. These girls clearly had enough muscle mass and physical strength to be able to perform these elements.

The other competitors weren't "crappy" and it shows you know zilch about gymnastics. The USA team is that good, not other countries are bad. This is a video about gymnastics, you are injecting bizarre misogyny and political overtones into it for some reason. There are plenty of youtube videos you can spew all day about hating whores and the govt. to your hearts content. In fact, if you are that upset about, maybe get into therapy and then try to do something to improve the world rather than trashing women on youtube who have worked harder than you ever have to achieve true excellence.
